    CITY PARKS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 109 GRANTS THROUGH NYC GREEN RELIEF & RECOVERY FUND AND GREEN / ARTS LIVE NYC GRANT APPLICATION NOW OPEN FOR PARK VOLUNTEER GROUPS Funding Awarded For Maintenance and Stewardship of Parks by Nonprofit Organizations and For Free Live Performances in Parks, Plazas, and Gardens Across NYC July 8, 2021 - NEW YORK, NY - City Parks Foundation announced today the selection of 109 grants through two competitive funding opportunities - the NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund and GREEN / ARTS LIVE NYC. More than ever before, New Yorkers have come to rely on parks and open spaces, the most fundamentally democratic and accessible of public resources. Parks are critical to our city’s recovery and reopening – offering fresh air, recreation, and creativity - and a crucial part of New York’s equitable economic recovery and environmental resilience. These grant programs will help to support artists in hosting free, public performances and programs in parks, plazas, and gardens across NYC, along with the nonprofit organizations that help maintain many of our city’s open spaces. Both grant programs are administered by City Parks Foundation. The NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund will award nearly $2M via 64 grants to NYC-based small and medium-sized nonprofit organizations. Grants will help to support basic maintenance and operations within heavily-used parks and open spaces during a busy summer and fall with the city’s reopening. Notable projects supported by this fund include the Harlem Youth Gardener Program founded during summer 2020 through a collaboration between Friends of Morningside Park Inc., Friends of St. Nicholas Park, Marcus Garvey Park Alliance, & Jackie Robinson Park Conservancy to engage neighborhood youth ages 14-19 in paid horticulture along with the Bronx River Alliance’s EELS Youth Internship Program and Volunteer Program to invite thousands of Bronxites to participate in stewardship of the parks lining the river banks.

While park equity is integral to creating One Brooklyn — a place where all residents can enjoy outdoor recreation and relaxation — fulfilling the vision of community parks first depends on measuring our current state of parks. This report will be used as a tool to guide my parks capital allocations and recommendations to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks), as well as to identify recommendations to improve advocacy for parks at the community and grassroots level in order to improve neighborhoods across the borough.

Bright clouds blew across the courtyard shaft. My New Balance had to stay stuffed with paper. My jeans had dried hung in the shower and didn’t even itch. Two women opened Dana Discovery Center. The one driving a golf cart in circles stopped. Silent attraction seemed to flow between us. The other smoked and rinsed rubber floormats. Wind made it cold for khaki ecologist suits. A cross-eyed girl shouted Morning! I couldn’t tell if there was someone behind me. On the way past I said Hello, twice, but she stared off gulping air. The pond at 110th (The Harlem Meer) is so reflective sometimes. Christo’s Gates had been up since Saturday. Last night I finally got to see them (in dismal circumstances: heavy bag, broken umbrella, damp socks and gloves). In all the Conservatory Gardens only one cluster of snowdrops had bloomed. Slender green shoots looked strong. Patchy light came through the trellis. As a jogger emitting techno beats curved beside the baseball fields I thought about vicarious emotional momentum. She had glossy dark hair. So many people use expensive hair products now. Somebody with leashes wrapped around one wrist sat with his face in a Daily News. People must always bug him about what it’s like to be a dog walker.

West Harlem Piers was not even Harlem over a hundred years ago. The area was formally known as Manhattanville. The pier was very important for trading and many transportation lines. This was very beneficial to the areas economy. * Fun fact: on August 25, 1885, the first electric cable­car was tested and this resulted in the first cross­town line from Harlem to Manhattanville. * In the 1900s the pier was a popular recreational area. During the summer the pier offered weekly summer music concerts. In 1965 the pier was demolished and considered to be a “a glass strewn, prostitute­bearing parking lot.” Time has changed this pier but the views of the captivating river will stay the same. Since the reopening there are plenty of actives in the summer like Pilate's, Salsa and Bachata lessons, tai chi and more. This is a great place to spend time with you and your family or just to stop by and explore. West Harlem Piers has your calming senses at ease. The Centers are listed alphabetically by city for easy access. In the event of a power outage, if your local Center is closed, please use this list to identify a center nearby. If you are planning to visit one of these Cooling Centers, it is advisable that you call in advance to make sure there is still seating available. If a Cooling Center is not operational, check the attached list for another Cooling Center nearest you or call 211 for L. A. County or 311 for L. A. City listings. Check with your local library when looking for a place to cool down. They have great resources and plenty to read while you escape the heat. Below are safety tips that will help you protect yourself and stay safe in the hot weather. If you plan to be outdoors, please take precaution to protect yourself from the sun and heat. • Avoid the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the burning rays are strongest. • Reduce physical activity. • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and light colored lightweight, loose-fitting clothes when you are outdoors • Avoid hot, heavy meals that include proteins. • Set your air conditioner between 75° to 80°. If you don’t have air- conditioning take a cool shower twice a day and visit a public air conditioned facility.
