Limited Live Performance Permit

About the Limited Live Performance Permit The purpose of a Limited Live Performance permit (LLP) is to permit live performances in establishments whose primary use is not entertainment. Examples include a restaurant with a piano player, or a café that hosts live poetry or music.

A LLP may be the appropriate permit for your venue if it meets all of the following conditions:

1. the primary use of your establishment is not entertainment, 2. performances will end by 10:00 p.m., 3. the area of the space occupied by performers is less than 200 square feet.

If your proposed use does not meet those conditions, a ﬁxed Place of Entertainment permit, or a One Time Event permit may be the appropriate permit for you, subject to zoning law.

How long does the application process take? Begin the application process as soon as possible, and immediately if you already oﬀer live performances.

What other forms do I need to submit along with my application? - California Alcohol and Beverage Control license (if applicable)

How are applications accepted? - You must drop oﬀ your application in person because you must pickup a large Notice of Application sign to be posted at the site of the proposed LLP.

- Applicants must pay fee at time of application.

I only have entertainment a few times per year. What if I operate without a permit? - San Francisco law requires that businesses adhere to all ordinances. Fines for being out of compliance begin at $100.

- If you have twelve or fewer performances per year, One Time Event permits may be more appropriate for you.

You have filed an application for a Limited Performance Permit. Our Department will notify the proper agencies regarding your application. You do not need to contact the Planning Department. The Planning Department will respond to the Entertainment Commission inquiry directly. If you are unavailable or do not hear from other City Agencies it is your obligation to contact them and arrange for required inspections and clearance. As with much business activity, it is advisable to maintain a record of names, dates, etc. regarding such contacts. It will also be your obligation to remain in contact with the agencies until you are certain that the Entertainment Commission staff has received wri en clearance from all the required agencies. You are advised that failure in this respect will result in extensive delay in the issuance of your permit or denial of your application. You will be notified of the date and time of the Entertainment Commission. At the Hearing, all factors relative to the issuance of the permit will be considered. If there are any protestant’s to such issuance, they will be heard. Prior to the Entertainment Commission action on application for a permit, the following City Agencies must submit their approval.

City Planning - You do not need to contact City Planning. The Entertainment Commission will contact City Planning Directly.

This permit requires that a notice be posted for 30 days to advise the general public of the application. You will sign an aﬃdavit of posting and post notice at your premises. The notice must remain posted conspicuously and continually for 30 days prior to the hearing date.
