He is now a professor of business at the University of Hawaii, and the Miccios will be traveling to Taiwan this summer where Dr. Miccio will chair a seminar in industrial engineering at the University of Taiwan. The methods of this research included a historical study of the career of Coach Lou Carnesecca and his professional style. The results of this study indicate that there are learning takeaways for professionals and executives that go beyond basketball including his charismatic and endearing approach, his understanding and love for his employer and his distinct professional philosophy. The conclusions of this study illustrate that professionals, beyond basketball, can learn valuable professional lessons from this quintessential coach. In addition, this research relates to the world of sports in that often times the human characteristics behind a coach can define his / her brand in the long term. Referred to: 1 A JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND MEMORY OF DEAN EDWARDS 2 SMITH, LEGENDARY MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF 3 NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL. 4 Whereas, Dean Edwards Smith was born on February 28, 1931 in Emporia, Kansas, 5 to Alfred and Vesta Smith, both public school teachers; and 6 Whereas, Dean Smith graduated from Topeka High School in 1949 and attended the 7 University of Kansas on an academic scholarship, during which time he was a student athlete 8 playing varsity basketball and baseball and freshman football, and was a member of the 9 Jayhawk basketball team that won the NCAA title in 1952 and finished second in 1953; and 10 Whereas, after graduating college in 1953, Dean Smith remained at the University 11 of Kansas where he served as an assistant basketball coach to Phog Allen and Dick Harp; and 12 Whereas, in 1954, Dean Smith joined the U.S. Air Force, where he played and 13 coached basketball in Europe and later served as an assistant basketball coach to Bob Spear, 14 and was the head coach of the Air Force Academy's baseball and golf teams; and 15 Whereas, in 1958, Coach Smith became an assistant to Frank McGuire at the 16 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and, in 1961, at the age of 30, became the 17 head coach when Coach McGuire resigned to become head coach
