Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

1. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

1.1 Season 2013

Season 2013 is best described as the “Year of the Dragon” with success achieved both on and off the football arena. The Brunswick Junior Football Club fielded five teams in the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) and in only its fourth season, had three (3) teams make the finals. The U10 and U13 teams then progressing to a Grand Finals, with the U13 winning back to back Premierships.

Premiership success is literally the “icing on the cake” as we have much to be proud, including 125 registered players representing the Club, an inclusive and family‐ friendly culture blending almost 125 families from the local community.

With a turnover in excess of $62,000 this financial year this Club continues to grow, due to the efforts of all our volunteers.

The foundations for strong growth in player numbers reveals that most players are returning again for season 2014 and the expectation is that 150 players will take to the field with teams from Tackers to U14 representing the Club. I am also pleased to announce that we have confirmed all coaches for season 2014.

1.2 Swisse Quality Club Program The Swisse Quality Club Program is designed to set and maintain standards in club administration throughout community football clubs. Instituted in 2005, the program recognises and rewards community football clubs for achieving a base standard of club administration through to levels of excellence. By applying for Bronze, Silver or Gold accreditation clubs can share in a range of prizes.

The BJFC has achieved bronze level accreditation in the Swisse AFL Quality Club Program. Our goal is to reach Gold level by 2015.

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

1.3 Treasurer for 2014 At out last committee meeting we approved of the employment of our Treasurer Wendy Canobie for Season 2014. Wendy has been the Treasurer since our inaugural year (2010) and the demands and compliance have grown each year as the club expands. The management of all clubs funds is vitally important and you will see the level of detail and analysis that is now provided to the Committee is significant (see Section 4 + audit statement). The input of all expenses, incomes, banking, payment invoices and the reporting of these transactions is in the order of 8-10 hours per week and will continue to grow.

1.4 Committee 2014 Over the past four years, the Committee has comprised mainly of parents from the BJFC foundation years of 2010 and 2011 and they have done an absolutely fantastic job at getting the club up and running.

With the increase in the number of teams and players at the club, for 2014 we have an initiative to increase the number of people on the Committee with participation of at least one and preferably two delegates from each team, thus increasing the number of members on the committee up to 10 people. We know there are many talented people out in the parent community who have a lot to offer our club and we need a selection of people with different skills and experiences to be involved in the running and growth of our club. The range of matters is diverse whether it be to assist in ground management, organising social functions, administration or sponsorships and fundraising, web site management or managing club communications. This is a chance for you to be involved in the overall operations and strategic direction of the club to ensure the club continues to grow as well as meeting the needs of all age groups.

The Committee meets once a month (usually a Wednesday night at the Grand View for Dinner). Parents which already undertake Football Coach, Assistant coach and Team Manager roles are not expected to also volunteer for Committee roles given the high volume of work they undertake during the year.

1.5 Strategic Plan

Over 2012 and 2013 the BJFC Committee have been working on the BJFC Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan is a comprehensive document which is intended to be a blue print for the on-going operation and strategic direction of the BJFC for the next five years. It covers the following key areas:

- The purpose statement of the BJFC - What are the key guiding principles of the club? - What goals do we want to achieve? - How are we going to achieve our goals? - How do we measure our success in achieving our goals? - Who is the club person responsible for achieving these goals? - The timeline for achieving each of our major goals - How much money and what will be required to achieve our goals - A detailed action plan

The final draft version of the BJFC Strategic Plan for BJFC has been available on the BJFC website since 29 September 2013 for community comment. When endorsed at the AGM it will become the key document for the Committee to manage the on-going operations and growth of our club.

1.6 Survey Results The BJFC 2014 Club Survey results have been uploaded to the website. There was an excellent response, with 108 surveys filled.

The response to the BJFC 2014 response was large (108 surveys filled) and mostly very positive. The greatest response was from the under 11 parents (34 responses) and the smallest response was from the under 13 parents (14 responses). Over 90 percent of the feedback about coaches was positive (in regards to coaches being fair, developing skill and being positive role models). Team Managers were found, on the whole, to provide accurate and timely information to team members, and to be organised on game day.

Over 25 percent considered the equipment and facilities to be only average.

7

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

It might be interesting to seek further details/feedback in this area. Maybe this was a reflection on the almost unplayable surface conditions of the oval during the winter?

The BJFC club culture was deemed good or very good by all who responded to the question on this topic. Responses regarding player enjoyment and skill development were all positive.

Team Manager emails were found to be the most useful way of receiving information from the club (73% found this to be the case), followed by the newsletter (47%) and talking to other parents (24%).

In regards to the financial cost of playing, 95% deemed the fees for BJFC to be good value for money, and 89% of respondents stated that their child would be returning to play in 2014 (note that the survey was completed in some cases by 2 parents with 1 child playing or 1 parent with more than 1 child playing).

Some feedback in the comments section:

. Need to keep trying to get more girls to play. Promote the strong 'play for fun not to win at all costs' culture the club has, let them know there's more to sport than netball, that with a bigger team there is more chance of playing every game. · [Would be good if] off field merchandise was ready to go within the first couple of weeks of season commencing. · Request for footy boot swap and on field attire & hoodies that are too small to be handed in and redistributed at start of season. These items should be offered to families who find $ prohibitive. · The President (+/-coaches) should facilitate a series of ‘Welcome to the Club’ talks (Q & A style) very early in the season on Wed evening to parents. The expectations of the players in taking more pride in THEIR clubroom – e.g. cleaning up after themselves on Wed pm after eating - should be outlined and enforced. The Director of Coaching should circulate through all age levels at training to support the coaches on the field. · The coaching team meeting should be scheduled on Friday evenings at the

8

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

Grandview Hotel to coincide with the ‘Dads at the Pub’ nights as a carrot for other dads to join at completion of coaching meeting and encourage more interaction and hopefully more participation around the club. · Foster a positive relationship with the NOBS - considering that's the obvious pathway for our teenage boys and yet there doesn't appear to be (much of) a relationship with the junior club – i.e. could the seniors help out at training? Could some juniors be mascots for the seniors' games? · Consideration should be given to each team having a dressing gown added to the kit for use by an injured player on the bench if required.

1.7 Canteen & Wednesday/Friday night meals for 2014 For season 2014 the club will train on Wednesday and Friday nights, allowing 3 teams to train on each night. It is expected that Wednesday nights will be U12, 13 & 14 and Friday Tackers, U10 and U11. This is required given the constraints of space and access to ovals. So for 2014 we require parents from both team groupings to be organised to facilitate meals and bar operation.

The meals after training continues to be an important part of our culture and we are grateful to Jenney Baker, Kath Kelly and all other parents who assisted throughout the year in providing this service. Our special thanks also to our RSA staff in staffing the bar in Dave Williams and Jane Sabatino.

1.8 Best & Fairest Of particular interest this year was the achievement of our first YJFL B&F winners with George Kelly taking out the U11 with team mate Romney Markwick runner up. A fantastic effort to have 2 team mates coming 1 and 2nd. For the Club Awards the items of note this year were:

• A second year in Tackers for Will Currie was of great benefit with Will by taking out the B&F after coming 8th in 2012; • Adam Jirik’s good form in season 2012 (RU B&F) continued with Adam coming 3rd. David Marchione also polled well for the second year with runner up B&F, after winning the B&F in 2012; • After coming runner up in 2012 (U10), George Kelly goes one better for 2013 winning the B&F, swapping places with Romney Markwick who won the 2012

9

(U10). Ewan Baulch (Coaches Award 2012) also polled well coming third. George and Romney also collected B&F and RU B&F in U11 (Red Div) in the Yarra Junior Football League; • For U12 new players to the team took out the first three places with Angus Ross (B&F) and Jimmy Manius (3rd B&F) while Sebastian Eaton who played in U12 last year (& Premiership) stayed another year at this level and came runner up. Eamon Pizzey took out the goal kicking award for the second year in a row; • For the U13 the results were repeated from 2012 with Daniel Mott taking out his 4th consecutive B&F Award with older brother William runner up. Francis Evans took out his 4th consecutive goal kicking award; • A new award this year was a contribution made by the Senior Club ($200) which was divided into 5x$40 vouchers from Rebel Sport. This award was allocated by Coaches.

1.9 Milestone - 50 Game players The Club is indeed fortunate that this year represented our first milestone players, being 50 games played. Players to reach this milestone were from the U12 and 13 sides, being

• U12 - Jack Middleton - Jonas Walsh - Clarrie Kilkenney-Jones - Sebastian Eaton - Eamon Pizzey • U13 - Josh Slaviero - Aden Van Gerrevink - Daniel Mott - William Mott – Francis Evans- Jack Ludeman - Finnian Eaton - Ziggy Ryan - Jack Sabatino- Will McKenzie - Will Khouri - Jasper Paevere - Kristian Panagiotidis

It is noted that for season 2014 a further 15 players should also reach this milestone, which is a great reflection on the club, as being a positive place to play and enjoy football.

Ray Nardella President 2013

2. DIRECTOR OF COACHING REPORT

Season 2013 represented the first year of this position, with the concept being to provide mentoring, advice and develop a Coaching Manual to ensure consistent coaching advice and approach. As the Club grows this position will also grow into two Coaching positions one for Junior (Tackers-U12) and one for Youth football (U13 to Colts).

Coaches for Season 2014 have been confirmed with all Coaches returning. For Tackers we have received three quality candidates for Tackers (Jude Allen & Anthony Macintosh) and Rob Purcell (to assist Mark Currie) in U10’s. Also pleasing were the results of the survey which indicated a high level of satisfaction with all Coaches.

11

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

2.1 Coaching Manual A Coaching Manual has been developed which is to ensure consistency in approach across all teams. There is a plethora of coaching manuals, books, training exercises, but which ones would you choose? The concept is to provide an approach based on the unique rules of the YJFL in particular for the younger age groups to ensure coaches teach picking up the ball, not kicking off the ground and to focus on skill development.

This manual was given to all coaches at the commencement of the year and has been revised over the season. Regular coaches meeting were completed during the year to discuss common issues and to support coaches in their role. The Manual has now been reviewed by AFL and its second edition will be distributed prior to season 2014.

2.2 Pre-season Pre-season commenced at Clifton Park on Friday for Tackers, U10 and U11. This day was consistent with the cricket training that was also conducted on Friday nights. The idea being to minimise disruption to routines. Wednesday nights was adopted for the other teams.

This year a “pre-season” competition was developed to test out the players skill level for both left and right with exercises completed from handball, kicking, bouncing the ball over distance etc. This was to provide Coaches with a reference point as to player’s skill level. The test was then completed in June and players with the best score were awarded with a leather Sherrin football. The results of this test can also be used in season 2014 to test for improvement as this program will be repeated.

2.3 Run & carry and the importance of bouncing the ball The bouncing of the ball is a critical component to the game and to ball drop: that is you need to be able to bounce with both left and right hands so that you can drop the ball onto either foot. Consequently each team had access to 24 training balls so that each player could practice bouncing the ball on the warm up laps.

Training was also conducted so that both kicking and handball exercises were completed on both sides of the body. This initiative cost approximately $200 per team.

12

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

2.4 Coaching accreditation The YJFL rules require all Coaches to complete Level 1 accreditation and all Coaches have met this standard. Both Ross Coverdale and Trevor Ludeman also have accreditation in the Youth Level, which is required for U13 teams. This is a modest cost to the Club with these training courses costing approximately $180 per course.

This year the Northern Football League also conducted free Coaching seminars at Optus Oval which were available to Coaches to attend. The provided assistant Coaches Brad Green and Gavin Brown at the first seminar. The following seminar was conducted by Assistant Ross Wiley. All of these seminars provide very useful information, with Ross Wiley identifying the “no step” kick to assist in the skill development of kicking the football. This techniques was then illustrated to all Coaches.

2.4 Finals The success of the Club is not necessarily defined by finals or Premierships, but by teaching the players to be competitive and hopefully having an opportunity to make the finals. Too many players go through their careers never experiencing finals football.

This year the Club was able to reach finals for 3 out of the 4 available teams with the U10 making their first Grand Final appearance. This was a great credit to all involved, given that at the commencement of the season numbers looked limited with only 10 players turning up for pre-season.

The U12 had only won 1 game for season 2012 but with the addition of new players and having another year of experience “under their belt “this side went onto participate in its first Semi- Final. A great effort by players and coaches throughout 2013.

The U13 completed “back to back” Premierships which was a fantastic effort for this group of players given their elevation from Black, Blue and into Green division for 2013.

13

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

2.5 Season 2014 & out of age groups Player’s numbers for each team have been confirmed with most players returning and the 2014 U12 team already full!

In our first year of competition (2010) the U10’s commenced the season with a 50/50 split of U10 and Tackers. In the YJFL players can play 2 years out of their age group (i.e. U10 could play U12).

Gradually over the past 4 years this has split has been reduced to players of the correct age participating in each team. Of note this year was Sebastian Eaton who elected to play another year in U12 which was successful for Sebastian in coming Runner Up in the B&F for 2013. A great effort.

For 2014 parents with players who are out of age should consider this option, particularly if the player has struggled in their age group. As Sebastian has illustrated this greatly assisted in development as a player development and he grew with confidence throughout the season.

2.6 Training for 2014 This year the training during the home and away round was limited to Tackers to U10 commencing at 5.00pm and U11 to U13 at 5.45pm. This was to ensure that Masters could commence around 6.30-7.00pm.

For season 2014 this will have to change and it is suggested that Tackers to U11 will train Fridays at 5.00 pm onwards with U12-14 on Wednesday nights (5.30). The limit to training is obviously ground capacity and three teams per session is the limit in terms of areas to train.

2.7 Communication For 2013 a half yearly update was provided to U13 parents which identified what was to be achieved throughout season 2013. It included a summary on:

• Why players were being rotated in 3-4 week blocks; • Why all players have started on the interchange bench at some time during the first 6 games; • Player rotations (with 6 players) are very high, at around 6 minute intervals;

14

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

• The style of play we wanted to encourage is for the players to “run and carry” the ball, so they need to practice bouncing the ball at speed over distance; • We expected players to commence using their non-preferred side; • In terms of skill development the Coaching group was completing more “one on one” training with players to correct kicking and handball technique, as some players still have trouble in this area; • In terms of training any player that does not train will start on the interchange bench, unless they have contacted Riad prior to the commencement of training; • In terms of game day mouth guards are compulsory as players will not be allowed to play.

At YJFL seminar during the year it was recognised that communication between Coaches and parents is vitally important. An update to parents will reduce concerns about player development, positions played and game day strategies.

Coaches for 2014 from U12 to U14 will be advised to provide these updates on an as required basis.

2.8 Brunswick Athletics Club Coaches have noticed over the past 2-3 years that some players have poor running technique, acceleration and top speed and the need for these issues to be corrected, given that running is fundamental to the game.

I arranged for Rhonda Jenkins from the Brunswick Athletics Club to conduct specific training in this area. Several players from the U13 train with Rhonda over last year’s Cricket Season which benefitted these players enormously.

This training occurred throughout the entire year with Rhonda and Mark attending training and conducting drill sessions. This will continue for Season 2014.

Now that the Athletics season has commenced parents and players would be advised to commence training with the BAC over summer as an adjunct to other sports.

3. COACHES REPORTS

3.1 TACKERS.

Looking back over the 2013 Tacker's season for The Brunswick Dragons and on behalf of the coaching team, I would like to sincerely congratulate all Tackers on a fantastic season.

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that there were improvements in many areas of football from all tackers involved. With the guidance and helping hand of parents making suggestions and their input both at training and on game days, it would be fair to say that the Tackers learnt and improved on some basic fundamental skills of football like kicking, hand balling, marking, shepherding, etc. But most of all they got a taste of what it feels like to be part of a team in a proper game of football and in a safe and controlled environment.

Although there was to be no scoring in the tackers, the aim of the game was to have fun. Let’s be honest! The Tackers knew exactly what the scores were and so did most of the parents. If you were to ask the Tackers if they had fun? The response from all kids would have been yes, win or lose. Yet their competitiveness as a team and drive to succeed saw them win more than half of the games played for the 2013 season, fantastic result for the Tackers as a team.

The kids that will go on next year to the under 10’s and start playing for points and to the kids that will continue with Tackers, all can move forward with confidence. There are many people, from the coaching team to the parents that will continue to help every week and be there to support the kids in their journey forward at the Brunswick Dragons Football Club. The same can be said for any new players and parents to the club, who will also become part of the team environment.

From a personal point of view it has been a place where my son William and I get to spend quality time together in a positive environment, that's the biggest reason why I feel that it's so important to be involved in a culture like the one at the Brunswick Dragons Football Club.

Mark Currie

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

3.2 U10 – Red - David Le Greca When pre-season commenced, there were a total of 27 players across the Tackers and Under 10’s sides. It was looking as though we would have to combine the two sides.

In the final 2 weeks of pre-season, a number of new players came to training. We were able to split the Under 10’s and Tackers and finalised a squad of 23 players. 9 of these players had not played in the Tackers side from the previous season. Some had played Auskick and had a season off, some had switched from different sporting codes, came back from overseas or interstate and some were even playing footy for the first time! Have a think about that... 9 new players out of 23 and we were starting the season in a couple of weeks. Half of the team didn’t even know each other! That’s what made this season pretty special.

THE SEASON AT A GLANCE…

In our first 4 games of the season, we would win two and lose two. Not a bad start. In our next 5 matches, we won two and lost three. By the half way stage of the season, we had identified which players were best suited to certain positions and the team became pretty settled from this point on.

In our last 6 home and away games of the season we were undefeated. We kicked a total of 34 goals and conceded only 7 goals in 24 quarters of footy. Quite an outstanding effort!

We had qualified for the finals. The first in Dragons history at Under 10 Level!

Finishing in 3rd position we played Park Orchards in our First Semi Final winning by 14 points. We went on to play Camberwell who had finished on top of the ladder and won by 13 points to qualify for the Grand Final. Despite our best efforts, Richmond were too good on the day. I know a lot of our players were disappointed, however, our focus all year was to give it our best until the final siren no matter what the result and our players can be very proud of their efforts and achievements this year.

TRAINING

The team was fortunate enough to have the help of a number of very knowledgeable people this season always willing to assist at training and on game days.

Every training session this year was structured so that we covered all the basic skills and more advanced drills. All of these incorporated fitness and agility training while

17

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013 using a footy in the meantime. We understand there are kids at different skill levels and spent a lot of time with ALL kids trying to teach them correct techniques and encouraging them to improve.

We spent many training hours on all the fundamental skills such as kicking, handballing, marking, bouncing and picking up the ball. Then we moved onto more advanced drills including Bags, Shepherding, Goal Kicking, Kicking to a Lead and Contested Marking just to name a few.

There was always an element of fun at training. Every training session finished with a game. We had some great contests playing “last goal wins” and all players had a chance to kick that winning goal.

We played footy tennis, had competitions in high marking and we had a few training sessions begin with goal kicking - snaps, banana kicks, torpedo’s and even drop kicks. The kids loved it!

IMPORTANT LEARNINGS

The side not only learnt footy skills at training, but more importantly learnt the importance of being a team and respecting each other. I have seen the side form a very strong bond over the course of the year and they have been fantastic in adapting to the following values:

Discipline – Things such as getting to training and games on time, learning and playing in specific positions, playing for each other and putting the team first, learning and following team rules (we began the season with 3 team rules and by Grand Final Day the team had memorised 10, which they stuck to week by week). Even little things like picking up cones and handing in bibs became important, which leads me onto a most important topic.

Respect – Respecting team mates, coaches, opponents and this club. I remember addressing players and parents for the first time making a strong point that I had absolutely no tolerance for bullying. There has been no swearing, fighting or bad sportsmanship. Everybody has been made to feel comfortable and a part of the team. We have never disrespected our opponents, have learnt to be humble when we win and sportsmen when we lose. I have seen all of our players learn to respect each other and make new friends. That for me has outweighed any result this year!

THANKS…

Scott Mackenzie came on board as an assistant coach this season. He has great knowledge of the game and is great with the kids. Always willing to offer his advice and encouragement and teach the kids the right way to do things. I look forward to coaching the Under 11’s with him in 2014!

Peter Grist also played a number of very important roles during the year, be it as an assistant coach, game day coach, runner etc. We spent many hours structuring a training plan and Peter introduced a number of fantastic ideas for player improvement on and off the field.

I would like to thank Ray McKenzie our Runner who switches between age groups and assists the club where he can. Ray also donated the water bottles for the team. Sorry for making you run so hard delivering messages every two minutes!

Dianne Wilson did an amazing job as our medico. She was on duty every game looking after the team with an array of bandages and ice packs! Thanks Di.

Gavin George had the un-enviable task of team manager. He did a great job posting team sheets, results, organising match day requirements, updating websites and putting together various presentations. Great work Gavin!

A special thanks to Trevor Ludeman. Trevor devotes an enormous amount of time to the club and has provided me with his knowledge and assistance many times throughout the course of this season. All of our parents/volunteers were recognised at our Best and Fairest day, however, I also wish to thank you for your assistance in various roles throughout the year at training and on game days.

Finally, thank you to the Under 10 team. 2013 was an outstanding season for the Dragons with two of our sides making the Grand Final. We had tremendous support all year and the lead up to the finals was amazing. It has been a great experience seeing you improve, both individually and as a team.

All of you have experienced playing in a Grand Final and it is an opportunity a lot of footballers will never get to play in through junior and senior football. You will remember it for a long time and we are all very proud of you. Congratulations on a fantastic season and I look forward to seeing you playing for the Dragons in 2014!

3.3 U11 – Red - Peter Gleeson

Initially it seemed that the 2013 season would be a simple and smooth transition from last year. From early indications it appeared that most of the team personnel, both on and off field, would return for this year. I felt that as a team there was good reason to look forward optimistically to another improved year with the possibility of playing finals not out of the realms of reality.

This proved to be a fair way off the mark as prior to the start of the season we found ourselves without an assistant coach and minus 11 of the players who had represented the club last year. Amongst the missing was our number 1 ruckman, our 2012 leading goal kicker, our hardnut in and under midfielder and one of our better midfield/key position players.

After all the hard work of season 2012 and the genuine improvement of the team over that period, I despaired a little, thinking that this would be the start of another team rebuild and to a certain degree this was true.

Of the 8 players who joined the team, 6 had never played the game competitively before, including 2 brothers from Switzerland who lacked any real knowledge or experience in Australian football whatsoever but appeared full of enthusiasm to have a go.

I tried to view this as a challenge rather than a reason to start thinking about writing the year off.

The Assistant Coaching vacancy was filled by Dominic Vaughan, a new dad to the club. Dom seemed to slip easily into the role and he developed a great rapport with both players and parents alike. Dom was very enthusiastic and hands on when it came to training. He was a great asset to the team and a great help to me both at training and on match day.

Once again Wendy Perdrisat was at the helm as Team Manager. I thank her personally and on behalf of the team for her organised method and tireless hours of work she put in to keep the off field operations running smoothly.

There was a great feeling of team among our existing parent group and we were very fortunate to have an influx of enthusiastic new parents to the club who all seemed to be very willing to help out both at training and on match days. The fabric of our team

20

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013 off the field has become stronger because of the addition of these new families. I would commend the manner in which our existing families welcomed in our new members and the manner and willingness of our new families to assimilate quickly and get down to the business of helping to make this team and club operate.

Most of the new recruits to the playing group required work on the basic game skills as well as learning about the strategies of playing a competitive game of football. They were not alone, as plenty of our more experienced players needed work on picking up the ball, kicking, handballing, marking, bouncing and tackling.

Early training sessions therefore centred heavily on drills which tested these skills. As the year progressed, more emphasis was placed on practising kicking and handballing on the non-preferred side. Skills were also tested under a degree of pressure, so players had to gain a contested possession, absorb some sort of pressure (tackle, bump, chase), evade and deliver accurately to a moving target.

Although not compulsory, I introduced the team to a number of the “12 rules” that had been implemented so successfully by our Under 12 premiership team from last season. Of particular importance was the emphasis on maintaining pressure. The notion that attacking forwards were required to apply defensive pressure in the forward line when not in possession of the ball and conversely that defenders needed to play with attacking flair when we had possession, was talked about repeatedly and demanded in games.

Game day focus became centred on being first to the ball, getting numbers to a contest, winning the contest and maintaining possession and control of the ball. The training emphasis therefore shifted more to drills and games which gave the players a contest, the opportunity to win the ball and test their ability to share the ball around and deliver accurately by hand or foot to a player further up field.

Players were given opportunities to play in various positions on the ground but, certainly by mid-season, most players had settled into more stable positions, i.e. forwards, defenders and midfielders. Although all players were expected to be able to switch roles at any time, the developing settled line up allowed players to be able to receive instructions to carry out a role and have opportunity to implement this plan.

Looking at the on field results of this under 11 team does not immediately suggest cause for celebration. The team managed to win 4 games and lost 11 of the 15

21

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013 matches that it played. At the end of the season the position that it occupied on the ladder was 8th out of 10 teams in the competition, well outside of finals contention.

I calculated average score for and against and average winning and losing margins, comparing them to the figures of this team (as under 10s) from last year, believing that there was an observable improvement. The improvement I expected was not there. The figures were all very similar to results from last year, meaning the team was kicking about the same amount of goals per match, having similar scores kicked against it and was winning and losing by similar margins.

These numbers showed that as a team a lot of work is required to tighten up the defensive structure of the side. There is also a need for the team to find more avenues to goal. I believe these will improve with increased experience of the group but these are aspects that the coaches will need to concentrate on in future.

However, despite what the figures were suggesting, the unanimous feeling amongst the coaching and parent spectator group was that this team was continuing to improve and play better, more consistent football as the season progressed.

Certainly, even in some defeats late in the season, the willingness of the boys to play out games to their conclusion and never give in, almost won us a couple. I was very pleased with this aspect of the character of this team.

I am also pleased with the way the more senior members of the team accepted the new players into their team and understood the need for an emphasis on basic skills at training.

I think these players realised that a lot of responsibility would fall on their shoulders particularly early in the year as their newer, less experienced team mates gained a better understanding and became more competent at playing the game.

So the reality of the season was that we started with a relatively inexperienced team that took time to learn and gel together. The load fell upon the experienced players to pull the team along and it was a tremendous effort to win some games early in the year.

The beauty was that as the new players gained experience and their skills improved the consistency of the team performance also improved.

22

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

In summary, the players should be very proud of the way they gelled together and included new, less experienced players into the group. They should not doubt the fact that, as a team, they continued to improve and play a better brand of team football. They must realise that, as a group, they can continue to get better and can become a very good football side. These things, however, can only be achieved through hard work, being prepared to practise and by applying themselves at training and learning sessions and bringing this to the field of play. The challenge is ahead for this group.

3.4 U12 Red - 2013

A ‘coming of age’ year and the season in brief:

• Full list of 24 players signed up for the 2013 season; • 5 new signings Angus Ross, Liem Jones, Jimmy Manius, Asher McAlbus and Daniel Gannan; • ‘50 game’ milestones for Jack Middleton, Jonas Walsh, Clarrie Kilkenny-Jones, Eamon Pizzey and Sebastian Eaton; • 50% win/loss record for the year with 6 wins and losses (from 3 wins over last 2 years); • Of 15 rounds we play just 12 games with 3 byes. Including the first and last rounds; • Finished 3rd on the ladder behind Canterbury and Richmond and just ahead of St Marys; • The team played in their first final after two year as wooden-spooners; • Clarrie and Angus Ross recognized in YJFL top 10 Best and Fairest awards (6th and 7th respectively). Total of 9 players polling out of 61 named in the division. • Although we found ourselves to be one of the smaller teams in the division we showed we had plenty of pace with and a majority of the line-up returning from 2012.

Our Motto - We identified the need to develop a good team culture and reinforced this with our motto ‘TEAM-EFFORT’.

23

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

• To play as a TEAM by supporting your team mates, on and off the field. Play the one-percenters, even if it meant not getting your own hands on the ball. These acts of selflessness would be recognized and rewarded over individual brilliance.

• To put in a full EFFORT individually on the training track and on game day. This effort would result in greater satisfaction in the knowledge that you had done your best.

As a result the effort the players put in was reflected in the team’s performances. Just reward. Shared emotions (both in victory and defeat) continue to forge the camaraderie that we can build on into the future.

Preseason

Good registration with a near full list of 24 players before the season started. Good training sessions on Clifton Park but an indifferent preseason match against West Coburg could not foreshadow the season to come.

The coaches read from the BJFC Coaching Bible (authored by Trevor Ludeman) that set clear skills and set play expectations for the U12 team. These will be built on as the team develops and grows.

The Season - ‘A slow start’

We drew the short straw with the draw by starting the season with a bye. It felt like the season would never begin. Round 2 at home finally saw us square off against Heidelberg and with the prospect of not having won a home game in two years hanging over our heads the mood was pensive.

However the boys keenness to get the season started was highlighted by a full bench. Unfortunately Heidelberg were struggling with numbers and had only 15 players. Jack McKenzie and Erik Newgreen put up their hands to pull on an opposition jumper. This act of courage and selflessness was matched later by a sickening clash in the dying seconds of the game between these same two players.

The game was close and seemed to hinge off the desire of each team to ‘win the ball’. In hindsight this game reflected our season in a microcosm. A struggle, a period asleep… then the waking of the beast. A strong, if not convincing win and a home ground hoodoo broken.

‘Finding our feet’

24

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

Rounds 3 – 4 found us playing the top two teams. First Hawthorn (re-graded to Black after round 4) then Canterbury. These games saw us challenged by strong well drilled teams. Although the scores were not flattering the contests were closer than they suggested. The game against Canterbury especially showed great tenacity scoring our highest ever score to date (7 - 5 - 47).

‘The Winning Streak’

Rounds 5 – 9 saw the team find form and start to gel. Our home game against St Marys was a low scoring, grinding affair between two well matched sides and although the result could have easily gone the other way the boys just willed themselves over the line.

With the wind in our sails the Dragons finally put it all together with a crushing 59 pt win over Banyule. It was a ‘coming of age’ game that through up more questions than it answered. How far could we go? We were finally singing our song without needing to read the words! From a coaching point of view the most pleasing aspects were the all-in effort by every member of the team. At half time major positional changers were directed with the expectation that we may struggle to win the ball with boys in new and unfamiliar positions. No need to worry. The avalanche only grew with Jonas kicking 5 goals in the last half.

A close win against Fitzroy at home, another bye and a holiday saw the mid-season slow and it felt like we could lose our momentum. Our return game against Heidelberg put that to bed with another convincing 53 point win. Restricting the Tigers to only 2 points. Angus Ross particularly proving to be an immovable object across half back. With 13 behinds the score could possibly have been much greater but for the ‘Gary Ablett esk’ goal snapping from the ‘pocket of despair’…aaaagh! This began the calls from the coaches box to ‘centre the ball’ for the rest of the season. Again positional changes only seemed to build player confidence.

These games gave our training extra meaning with new more complex drills being introduced with the assistance of John Ross’s extensive experience. We introduced ‘three man teaming’ with a contesting marker, a man front & centre and the backup. We encouraged a play-on style and recognized running as a major strength and worked hard on core fitness. Kicking and handballing techniques were also worked on with considerable improvements becoming evident as the season progressed.

25

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

By the end of round 9, believe it or not, we sat 2nd on the ladder and getting a bit dizzy!

‘Reality Bites’

Rounds 10 – 13 reminded us that we still had a lot to learn. With the weather turning against us, grounds were beginning to wear with playing surfaces becoming heavy at best and rain preventing us from training on Gillon.

Our first (and thankfully last) look at Richmond saw our only 100+ point loss against a much larger and stronger team. With the game taken away from us in the first half, the team showed grit to keep plugging away until the final siren. A lesson in playing your best.

Canterbury at home and St Marys away in heavy conditions found our ‘achilles heel’. Hard man-on-man contested football. Smarting from three losses and a season starting to flatten out, Banyule looked like a glimmer of hope to regain some confidence but we didn’t count on a rejuvenated Banyule. Another game at home on a Gillon resembling ‘The Somme’. More like a battle field than a football ground. A four goal breeze, bright sunshine all-be-it glue pot conditions. It was an old fashioned mud fest some fathers/mothers might remember from the seventies. With a heavy ball and a determined Banyule defense we had most of the late running but couldn’t free ourselves from that ‘pocket of despair’.

‘Our Last Chance’

Round 14 with the season slipping away, we were just hanging on to 4th. We needed to make our own future and not let other results determine our fate. A dry hard ground welcomed us against Fitzroy away. The gods were again on our side. Our fast running game was back and confidence went through the roof with a 61 point win. Clean possession and plenty of gut running gave the crowd lots of highlights to savior.

‘Finals Footy’

With a bye in the last round before the finals a special Friday night training session gave the team some much needed time to hone skills and work on game plan drills. Heading into our first final, it would be fair to say the mood was not of supreme confidence but rather a steely resolve that the work had been done and it was time to give St Marys a real run for their money. We were in no doubt that we owned ‘under- dog’ status.

Templestowe Reserve hosted the semifinal and presented us with a day ideal for footy. Dry, hard and fast, just the way we like it. St Marys didn’t mind the conditions either and got out to a two goal lead early on. They looked bigger faster and more skilled. We had our work cut out. Back in the rooms at half time the mood was pensive. As we had done earlier in the season the coaches reinforced the fact that the outcome was in the players hands. All the work had been done throughout the year and it was now or never. Whatever it was, the oranges, the snakes and jelly-babies or the quiet navel gazing, something clicked. The Dragons breathed fire and played out of their skins. A championship quarter! An 18 pt deficit was turned into a 4 point lead. The Kookaburra’s were starting to unravel and tempers were fraying. The final term message was to keep our eye on the footy and run, run, run. Another goal against the breeze and we were 10 points up. However to their credit St Marys regained composure steadied and replied with two goals to close out the game by 3 points.

27

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

Although the disappointment amongst the players was raw immediately after the game we should put it in the context of the journey taken over the season (and previous seasons). To make the finals was an early challenge put to the team and to be honest there were a lot of skeptics. Now we can dare to dream!

‘Looking to the Future’

The season proved to be a roller-coaster ride with high highs and low lows but the challenges were faced with enthusiasm and determination. To a man the U12 Dragons should be very proud of their achievements and, more than just their developing skills, it was their growing self-belief and maturity to control their own destiny that were the real rewards. The question of building their own ‘team culture’ were asked of the them earlier in the season and their ability to drive and lead themselves spurned the performances such as the semifinal. I think we all eagerly wait for season 2014 to commence.

Support

Thanks to all parents and families who availed themselves of the thousand-and-one jobs that go into getting the team on the park each week from assistance at training to canteen and match day duties. Also, thanks to the wider Brunswick JFC community that makes coming to the footy so much fun. Special thanks to David Jackson (Assistant Coach) for his astute assistance throughout the year and most of all the herculean work done by Team Manager Bronwyn Tanti in keeping the machine well oiled. The staff consisted of:

• Bronwyn Tanti, team manager • David Pizzey, coach • David Jackson, assistant coach • Brendon Jones, runner • Terry Hogan, trainer • Ari Jackson, coaching bib hander-outer • With cameos from John Ross, Simon Barrile (and cupcakes by Libby O’Connor).

We bid a fond farewell to the Middleton Family. Jack, a foundation player played his 50th game during the year and always played with heart. Joan has been the backbone of the club with her tireless work managing the canteen and various roles on the

DAVID PIZZEY - Coach U12

3.5 U13 Green The old adage in Amateur Football is hold your list, add 6 and don’t book holidays in September! The expectation that this strategy should get a team into a final series. This came true for 2013 with the U13 commencing with 16 players of the U12 Premiership returning while we were very fortunate in having six (6) new players coming into the side. These players being James Andrianakis, Patrick Boreham Delany, Gus Coverdale, Raff Carroll, Tahj Haddock, and Declan Ramage.

These players came with new Assistant Coach Ross Coverdale. Both Ross and these players were wonderful additions to the U13 side and were definitely required given that the U12 were elevated from Black to Blue Division for season 2013. With the success in the first four grading games for 2013 the U13 team was further elevated into Green Division.

This year one of the strategies to improve player’s awareness was to play each player 4-5 games in the forward, defence and centre lines. The AFL Youth Coaching course identified an issue whereby players have played their entire career in only 1or 2 position. This task took Ross about 90 minutes in team selection for each game, while parents would have also noticed that rotations were made about every 7 minutes to ensure all players had at least 3 quarters per game. Overall this strategy worked as the players could play in any position, while from round 12 onwards we started to finalise team positions based on the player’s ability.

The elevations of the team into Green Division was a positive move as the first 4 games resulted in large wins and for the players to develop; they needed to be tested throughout all positions on the ground i.e. they needed to be able to “run both ways” i.e. from defence to forward line. Training also emphasised run and carry where layers had to carry the ball over distance through bouncing the ball, rather than bombing the ball to another contest.

Green Division

The team from round 5 onwards was regularly tested throughout the year with many close wins being recorded. Conditions fluctuated from hot and windy to the almost

29

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013 unplayable muddy surface of Gillon Oval during mid-winter. The team lost the last home and away game taking the total number of wins for the season to 14, the same as for season 2012. The season 2013 results after round 5 to Green Division

Ground Opposition 5 Bulleen Park Oval No.1 6.4-40 Surrey Park B 4.3-27 6 Schramms Reserve 2.5-17 Doncaster B 2.2-14 7 Gillon Oval 7.8-50 St Marys W 4.2-26 8 Gillon Oval 3.4-22 Ashburton R 1.3-9 Gordon Barnard 9 7.9-51 Greythorn 0.5-5 Reserve 10 Gillon Oval 11.8-74 Balwyn 2.2-14 11 Pitcher Park 4.6-30 Parkside 4.5-29 12 Gillon Oval 4.2-26 Surrey Park B 1.3-9 13 Gillon Oval 3.2-20 Doncaster B 1.3-9 14 Whatmough Park 5.2-32 St Marys W 2.9-21 15 Burwood Reserve 3.5-23 Ashburton R 8.7-55

Notable games were Doncaster, Ashburton and St. Marys where narrow wins were scored. One of the most exciting was against Parkside which were the Green Division Premiers in 2012 and had returned after the first 4 weeks in Brown Division. There was nothing in it all day with a close tussle and both sides not giving an inch. Their game was very similar to Brunswick with fast and skilful on-ballers and good key position players who were prepared to run and carry the ball. The last quarter Parkside dominated play in their forward line with the Dragons constantly repelling, but in the end with about a minute to go Parkside scored a goal which put them 5 points up. The game looked lost. But the players had other ideas! The return of the ball to the centre saw Parkside win out of the centre, but was thwarted by Jack Ludeman, who passed to Jack Sabatino in the centre. A quick pass to Oscar Rausa from big Saba saw Oscar mark and without hesitation turned around from 40 metres out and let fly with a torpedo. It rolled through for a goal! The Dragons up by a point and then the siren sounded 30 seconds later. An unbelievable effort.

30

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

Finals

The loss of the second semi-final to Doncaster occurred in the final minutes of the game. A howling gale into the south-eastern forward pocket bottled up play in this position all day. The players knew we had to centre the ball to get out of this pocket. The first quarter resulted in goal with the breeze in the first 30 seconds.

In the second quarter the players managed to run the ball into the gale and score a goal, which was going to make Doncaster task harder later in the game.

Doncaster however played excellent defensive football in the third quarter and prevented the Dragons from scoring. The last quarter was going to be difficult to defend. In the end the Doncaster overcame the Dragon defence to score a victory by 7 points.

The Preliminary Final against St. Marys at the Macleod Oval both sides were greeted with a 5 goal northerly breeze. The Team had only just beaten St. Marys in round 13 where they kicked inaccurately in the last half of the game (2 goals 9 behinds).

Winning the toss the Dragons kicked with the breeze in the first quarter, 3 goals were scored. St. Marys replied in similar fashion in the second quarter. For the third quarter the Dragons failed to score with St. Mary’s defence working well, with only 1 point between the teams at ¾ time. This was going to be difficult game to win with St. Marys now having the 5 goal wind in the last quarter.

The instructions for the last quarter were to keep the ball low and run the ball up and score against the breeze: obvious but could they achieve, given that no-one had scored against the breeze all day! The players responded and 4 goals were kicked with the Dragons booking their second consecutive Grand Final berth.

Grand Final

The Grand Final at the Templestowe Park was played under excellent conditions with a slight breeze favouring the southern end. The large ground would suit the Dragons, given that it was bigger than Gillon Oval. The question was whether the extra final would take its toll on the players and whether the fresh legs of Doncaster would prevail?

The game started with Doncaster scoring the first goal and placing the Dragons under enormous pressure. At about the 7minute mark the Dragons started to control the game and the statistics at quarter time revealed 8 smoothers and 15 tackles, which were unbelievable statistics. This indicated that the players were prepared to place great physical pressure on the opposition. The work rate around the ground was fantastic. The Dragons then started to control the game and kicked 2 goals against the breeze, finishing the quarter at 2-1-13 to Doncaster 1-2-8.

The second quarter and the Dragons extended the lead kicking another 1-5 and kept Doncaster scoreless. Half time a handy lead of 3-6-24 to 1-2-8. The Premiership quarter awaited with a further 1-4 scored to Doncaster 1-1. A 19 point lead at ¾ time by the Dragons set up the final quarter. The Dragons responded and did not relent and kicked another 1-4 to Doncaster 1-1 with final scores being - Brunswick 5.14.44 defeating Doncaster 3.4.22

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

This was an unbelievable result given that the Team had jumped up 2 divisions from Black (U12- 2012). What was common all year was that the team would never give up and their desire and competitiveness were rewarded with many close wins with the Parkside and St.Marys Preliminary final the standout games for the year.

Season 2014

Next year the team will be placed into Brown Division where most clubs have more than 1 team in each age group. This will be a very competitive Division which will require players next year to increase their speed, height, weight and skill level to be competitive.

4. Treasurer’s Report

I am pleased to present the following report which reflects the transactions for the Club for the period 1st October 2012 to 30th September 2013.

Revenue

Once again, another great year within the Canteen due to the hard work and dedication from everyone involved. Season 2013 generated revenue of $16,798 less costs of $9,355 giving the Club a surplus of $7,443. A good effort considering the canteen did not operate every weekend and catered for only one TOTE social games day compared to 2012 the Club managed three of such events.

Revenue received from Player Registrations for 2013 was $21,204 (plus $570 already received for Season 2014). Revenue raised from player registrations for 2013 represents 70% of the actual running costs of putting players on the field.

Sponsorships

We received sponsorship money from The Grand View Hotel $1,000. Last year the Club presented a framed “dragons” jumper to the hotel so this year the Club presented framed photographs of the U13’s Back to Back Grand Final Teams.

Contributions were received from Mega Pet Wharehouse (Raso family), Tracy Kerr family, Ray McKenzie family, Ty Perdrisat family, Max Barrile family, Jonas Walsh family, and all U13 parents, for the purchase of new drink bottles for each team.

North Old Boys St. Patricks Coterie Group allocated $200 towards the end of year Player Awards with the intention of continuing sponsoring again next year.

34

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

Donations

• Oranges each week from LaMana Fresh • Percentage of takings from Café 2 U (coffee van) $440 • The Mouthguard Man $71.50 (percentage of orders) • The collection of 5cent coins totaled $60 • The Jonas Walsh (Ali Beswick) Family donated $600 towards the purchase of the stainless steel bench top for the Canteen

Raffle Donations

• Novotel St. Kilda - Accor (Tracy Kerr Family) Accommodation package • The Mouthguard Man - Two Gift Vouchers of $60 each • Ascot Vale Leisure Centre – 1month membership • Coles Myer & Safeway Big W Gift Cards, Bunnings, Sporting Bags and numerous sports Balls and Hampers of Goodies.

Grants

• Kylie Moreland submitted a successful application to the Department of Planning & Community Development for $1000 towards the purchase of new playing shorts for 2013. • BHP Billiton Matched Giving - $730 This funding is yet to be received but is matched by the donation made by Ali Beswick Family towards the SS bench top and share of the U12’s Drink Bottles

Expenses

• Major expenses for Season 2013 included the payment of ground and facility costs, cleaning of club rooms, water rates, gas and electricity of $4,400. • Footballs $4,592, Equipment & Apparel for 5 Kit Bags $2,647. • Canteen and Clubroom expenses $2,382 of which $1,375 was paid to Brunswick Community Sports Club towards Capital Works on new canteen entrance.

35

Brunswick Junior Football Club – AGM 2013

With five teams in the YJFL for 2013 meant an obvious increase in affiliation fees and umpire services for 2013 being $6,446 compared to $4,795 for 2012. Extra umpire services were required this year due to BJFC teams participating in finals.

It was expected that each BJFC team supply its own certified First Aid trainer for game day matches. Therefore, for season 2013 the Club covered the cost of volunteers to attend First Aid courses and Coaches Training courses $2,454 which is a requirement under the League Guidelines.

Balance Sheet

• One Debtor - Parkville-Youldon Cricket Club $114 for half share of “Survey Monkey” software subscription. • Addition of new Asset – Stainless Steel Bench Top for Canteen $1200 • Liabilities – A monthly Merchant bank fee (EFTPOS machine) of $51.90 will apply.

Bank Account

Balance as at 30/9/13 was $12,952.60 in credit.

The majority of this amount will be placed on a Fixed Term Deposit account at the Nab for a period of 5-6 months.

Fees for Season 2014

As mentioned above revenue received from 2013 player registrations was $21,204. With the actual running costs totalling $30,000 for 5 teams ($6,000 per team) gives a shortfall of $8,796. To keep membership fees competitive, extra effort is needed to generate sponsorships, donations and the continued parental support in the Canteen on game days and other catering functions.

An Early Bird price of $190 has been advertised for payment of player registration for 2014 before the 1st November 2013. To date we have received four 2014 registrations.

Player Registrations for 2014 will be $210 per player and sibling/s at $147 each.

The cost of Playing Uniform and other Apparel is not included in the Registration fee.

Foot Notes:

1. Only a slight increase in revenue from Canteen compared to 2012 due to teams playing away games and this year’s Tackers played 9 games away in a row. 2. Increase in 2013 bar takings due to increased number of adults and bar opened most weeks. 2012 bar takings down due to only 12 weeks of operation, compared to 2011 the bar operated for 18 weeks. 3. Meal takings for 2012 down due to only 12 weeks of operation. 2011 takings higher due to the higher charge for meals prepared & catered for by outside supplier. This service operated for 19 weeks. 4. Non playing apparel ($1,565) represents stock on hand due to receiving goods late in the season – however these will be available for 2014. 5. Participation medals were not issued to U13 players this year and the supplier offered a discount for early payment. 6. Increased from last year due to more coaching staff required to attend league courses. Due to poor conditions of Gillon oval, some training sessions were conducted at SNHC in Parkville at a cost of $424 7. Additional footballs were purchased to ensure every player had a ball at training. Leather match balls were required for U13 home & away games at $78 each. Synthetic red match balls and yellow training balls cost $20 each. 8. Capital Works contribution of $1,375 towards upgrade of canteen access.

Audited Reports

The Clubs financial transactions are currently being audited by Mr Derek Ma, Kearney & Co., Accountants. The Auditor’s Statement will be tabled at the Annual General Meeting.

I expect there will be minor adjustments to the Balance sheet showing updated Stock on Hand, Equipment and depreciation added.

All the best for Season 2014 and beyond.

1 The Dragons 'family' has been a richly rewarding experience for us and the Aug 11, 2013 8:28 PM boys, and they love their footy, their team and their club - which is what matters most.

2 All good Aug 8, 2013 9:20 PM

3 Very enjoyable season, great community atmosphere; relaxed engaging and Aug 6, 2013 6:46 PM enthusiastic.

4 2013 is our first year being involved with 'club footy' and I couldn't be moe Aug 6, 2013 2:16 AM pleased. I found the experiance to be very positive and I can't speak highly enough of Pete Gleeson and Wendy Perdrisat and other people involved in making it happen, from the match reports to the photographs, the umpires, runners ,water carriers canteen helpers and supporters. Everyone displayed a responsible, caring and sportsman like attiude and presence which at times (very few) was in contrast to our competitors . The kids were happy and proud to compete and I felt good leaving each match, win or loose. We look forward to the next few years at BJFC. Congratulations BJFC .

5 Great club Aug 5, 2013 11:07 PM

6 Fantastic Jul 31, 2013 4:43 PM

7 Angus has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of BJFC Jul 31, 2013 1:48 AM

8 lots of hard work but well worth it. Jul 30, 2013 7:11 PM

9 Need to keep trying to get more girls to play. Promote the strong 'play for fun Jul 30, 2013 12:37 AM not to win at all costs' culture the club has, let them know there's more to sport than netball, that with a bigger team there is more chance of playing every game. That we are a club with a home ground, rooms and a sense we are there for the kids, not they for us.

10 Great stuff guys, Zac is going to give soccer a crack next season Jul 26, 2013 4:02 PM

11 Love the culture of community connectedness at the Brunswick Dragons! Jul 26, 2013 6:13 AM Great club to be involved with! It would be an even better club if...... Off field merchandise was ready to go within the first couple of weeks of season commencing. Request for footy boot swap and on field attire & hoodies that are too small to be handed in and redistributed at start of season. These items should be offered to families who find $ prohibitive. The President (+/- coaches) should facilitate a series of "Welcome to the Club" talks (Q & A style) very early in the season on Wed evening to parents The expectations of the players in taking more pride in THEIR clubroom - eg cleaning up after themselves on Wed pm after eating - should be outlined....and enforced The Director of Coaching should circulate through all age levels at training to support the coaches on the field. 'The coaching team meeting should be scheduled on Friday evenings at the Grandview Hotel to coincide with the "Dads at the Pub" nights as a carrot for other dads to join at completion of coaching meeting and encourage more interaction and hopefully more participation around the club Foster a positive relationship with the NOBS - considering that's the obvious pathway for our teenage boys and yet there doesn't appear to be (much of) a relationship with the junior club - ie could the seniors help out at training? Could some juniors be mascots for the seniors' games? Have a reasonable limit for $ spent on committee And lastly, consideration should be given to each team having a dressing gown added to the kit for use by a injured player on the bench if required. That's about all for now...... Go Dragons!

3 of 7 Q1. Do you have any comments you'd like to make about your experience of the Brunswick Dragons?

12 It was another great year - lots of fun getting to know more parents & the Jul 26, 2013 2:53 AM parent social nights at the Grandview were a highlight! Ty thought that 'it was all good!!'

13 Thank you Jul 25, 2013 11:23 PM

14 I love the president Jul 25, 2013 1:05 AM

15 We love it!! Jul 25, 2013 12:46 AM

16 Keep up the good work. Go Dragons! Jul 24, 2013 11:31 PM

17 This was my son's first season playing football and he had very little football Jul 24, 2013 10:16 PM skills. However despite rarely touching the ball during games he has loved the experience of being part of a team and being active. The dedication and fairness of coaching staff has been fantastic as has the team management - all of which has contributed to helping me get my son away from computer games and out on the field having fun. Much thanks to everyone for creating such a welcoming atmosphere.

18 Gavin George's coordination as Team Manager has been spectacular. He Jul 24, 2013 9:53 PM deserves strong recognition for his care, attention to detail and patience! I am a busy, working parent and he's always kept me informed and organised! Also, all our coaches put their heart and soul into encouraging and mentoring the kids. I have been really impressed with their generosity and commitment. They make personal connections and make an effort to get to know each of the kids. We've loved our first season with the Dragons. Every single person I've met that's been associated with the club has been friendly, open, considerate and helpful. Also a great bunch of kids - and the coaches don't tolerate poor behaviour, so the kids all know where they stand, which is great. Big focus on teamwork and respect, and a strong sense of community. We love the Dragons.

19 It was a very good experience for our sons to play Football and we were Jul 24, 2013 9:20 PM happy with the very good organisation! Thanks

20 GO DRAGONS Jul 24, 2013 9:13 PM

21 Fantastic introduction to team sport for young boys and a supportive and Jul 24, 2013 8:35 PM inclusive club atmosphere for all family members. Extremely happy and impressed all involved should be congratulated and proud of the positive impact and wonderful mentoring that is demonstrated.

22 Go Dragons!! Jul 24, 2013 8:26 PM

23 fantastic club. great group of people. Jul 24, 2013 8:09 PM

24 It might be a good idea to cap each team number to 24 players so that Aug 25, 2012 2:44 AM players don't have to rotate into different teams. Both Ben and Josh enjoyed this year playing for the Brunswick Dragons both at Training and Match Day. They also enjoyed the match day feedback from there coaches and the weekly newsletter. Josh expecially liked the email that was received from his coach at the end of the season .

25 As a founding member of the club, I have found BJFC to be a warm, Aug 15, 2012 6:51 AM welcoming environment, where the players enjoyment and footy development comes first, but also where strong social and community values are part and parcel of the club's activities. Also a great way of

extending your parent network beyond the immediate school parent group, and a great way for parents and kids to make new friends.

26 In general, a very positive experience. Impressed with the parents who Aug 14, 2012 4:10 AM coach and help out with training, very inclusive and calm approach. As a first timer to junior football and without much knowledge of the game some information early on about what the different match day roles involved would have been helpful.

27 Because the coach is just a parent, I understand that it is hard to not have Aug 13, 2012 4:24 AM favourites, but it certainly felt like there were boys who were given more encouragement & more of a go than others. Also, the match report was always unfairly biased towards certain players even when other boys had fantastic games. My son loves the club though, so we will probably play again & see if it improves more next year.

28 It was great experience watching kids play footy this season. Aug 9, 2012 7:08 PM

29 I think the coaches of all the squads need to be more of a unit and Aug 9, 2012 7:00 PM interchangeable

30 For our family it has been a fabulous experience - from the comraderie of the Aug 8, 2012 9:13 PM canteen to the skill development of our son, who had not been able to play for three seasons because of broken bones. We have enjoyed the Sunday mornings with other parents, getting to know them and their sons and watching the boys grow and develop a more cohesive team. Our experiences totally exceeded our expectations. Thanks

31 Its been great to have my children ( Finnian & Bazzie) at the Dragons from Aug 8, 2012 12:45 AM day 1 and seeing the club build and keep buiding.!!!

32 The President is a LEGEND and a spunk! Aug 7, 2012 11:22 PM

33 Excellent club with a great sense of community. The coach and other parent Aug 7, 2012 4:48 PM helpers are extremely committed to the kids and the team.

34 truly a positive one. Aug 7, 2012 4:22 PM

35 The Brunswick Dragons is a fabulous club - the atmosphere at Aug 7, 2012 3:44 AM training/match day is fantastic. There's no pecking order! There's a positive family vibe & this is evident to outsiders. The importance of sharing the load amongst volunteers/not leaving it to too few is essential - especially in regards to the ownership of the club-it's about community development. Your club/your community-the importance of having a vision & outlining that & referring to it throughout the year is paramount. This is evident! Continue to breathe fire! Go Dragons! Aim high & Be your best!

36 just fantastic Aug 7, 2012 12:41 AM

37 I would like to see a more positive enforcement, skill building and football Aug 6, 2012 4:56 PM expertise displayed form a coaching angle, at times it was very negative, flat and the boys could smell the fear and lack of authority. Not everyone is born to coach - Dave was always fantastic.

38 A positive experience for my family and myself. Aug 5, 2012 10:22 PM

40 My son loves playing for the Dragons - absolute hightlight of his year. Great Aug 5, 2012 1:39 AM club, great people involved.

41 Coaches could do more to promote friendly behavior and stop boys teasing Aug 4, 2012 6:27 AM their team mates. Suggest having team rules or mantra to remind boys to try hard, be a friend to their teammates and play fairly.

42 George has had another wonderful season with the Dragons - thanks to a Aug 4, 2012 5:46 AM wonderful management and coaching group! I suggest from the outset next season that we promote a Mums at the Pub night and a Dads at the Pub night once a month for facilitating social connectedness. Also, as part of parent consent, they should have to sign at registration that they will work in the Canteen for 3 one hour sessions over the 16 week season, and although footy fixture not available, the parents can nominate if they want to do their one hour shift before, after, or during their child's game. Rostering in the Canteen needs to fair and sustainable.

43 We have been very pleased with the tackers coach and the Team Manager. Aug 4, 2012 1:54 AM Teaching good behaviours by the coach, and great up to date information from the team manager.

44 i would like to see the children playing in a wider variety of positions, as in Aug 3, 2012 9:27 AM back line or forward line. I know some kids are better than others, but I am proud of the Brunswick attitude, one shared by Fitzroy, where we play for the love of the game, not to win. We are good at it, we could be even better if we mixed the teams around and remembered the kids just want to touch the ball, get a kick, do a good tackle, get dirty, get tired and worry about having a hot dog afterwards. If they play well enough to win, then they need to do it with grace and humility which does not include singing the song on the ground.

45 I was terrifically impressed with the way that Andrew and all the blokes Aug 3, 2012 6:06 AM struck the balance between determination, sportsmanship, fairness and of course fun. Credit to them and especially to the players--they responded magnificenty, never gave up, and kept on playing hard to the end.

47 A friendly and positive environment for the whole family Aug 3, 2012 4:29 AM

48 I found that in general parents were friendly but tended to converse with Aug 3, 2012 12:40 AM other parents from their own kids school, so not as inclusive as i had hoped

49 A great community club that is well run and puts the interests and well being Aug 3, 2012 12:20 AM of our children ahead of everything else. Thanks BJFC committee and coaches.

50 Hi - the club has been really welcoming and we are really impressed with the Aug 2, 2012 4:44 PM positive approach of the coaching and the way that other parents support the team. We're sorry we haven't helped this season with the canteen or coaching. We'd find a canteen roster for the season or for the coming weeks more helpful, also a list of people's names (and their children's). Is there a booklet outlining what the canteen duty people need to do and how to cash up? Cheers and thanks, Phil and Cate (Angus' parents)

51 We have found the experience a positive and encouraging one for both boys, Aug 2, 2012 5:15 AM regardless of their abilities. The club promotes a family friendly environment. Great canteen food

52 The club has a great social and community feel about it. Aug 2, 2012 4:20 AM

53 great to see my child made friends with kids from not just his school but also Aug 2, 2012 1:50 AM other schools and year levels.

54 It has been a fantastic experience for our son. He is often reluctant to take Jul 31, 2012 1:35 AM risks and try new activities but the positive contributions of coaches has made this season a breeze.

55 A great first year at the Dragons. Looking forward to next year. Jul 30, 2012 2:12 PM

56 This was my first season of community football and I really enjoyed the Jul 30, 2012 5:19 AM experience & take every opportunity to promote the club to others! Really looking forward to being a Team Manager again next year if the club would like me to do that again!!

57 Don't worry too much about social activities for parents - club activities Jul 30, 2012 4:17 AM should be about the kids
