WORLD SCHOOL SEVENS BIO The World School Sevens is an U18 International Sevens boys and girls rugby tournament that has grown significantly since its inception in 2016 with teams travelling from , USA, , Australia, Fiji, Tonga and Vanuatu. As well as national representative teams it also includes expat, barbarian and invitational sides including the New Zealand Fijians, Tongan Barbarians, Samoan Barbarians, Cook Islands and Niue. The event in 2019 peaked with thirty-two sides including seventeen international teams and was heading towards close to fifty teams before Covid struck. This included interest from new markets including France, Zimbabwe, UAE and South Africa.

The event provides quality competition and has resulted in over twenty players going on to represent their nation at Sevens at the highest level. National representation at the senior level includes teams from Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, USA, Canada and Tonga. Our first All black played in the 2016 Tournament. Many nations are now using this event to identify and develop their players for the Olympic Sevens, Commonwealth games, HSBC Sevens series or for genuine rugby development. The event takes place on Friday and Saturday December 18th and 19th 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand. Teams are accommodated in various hostels at private schools in Auckland with some of the best facilities available for training.

In 2021 we will introduce two divisions the Elite Division – National teams and Composite sides and the Schools Division. - entirely made up of school teams The weeks activities include a warm up game or mini tournament, an official New Zealand welcome, a players breakfast , a few social gatherings and the tournament itself which takes place over two days. There are opportunities for sightseeing, swimming at our beaches and also connecting with various rugby academies and institutes. We look forward to hosting you in New Zealand at what we consider one of the greatest sevens festivals in the world.

RUGBY SUPPORT OF WORLD SCHOOL SEVENS TOURNAMENT

This letter is to express New Zealand Rugby’s endorsement and support of the World School Sevens event which is held annually in Auckland.

The World School Sevens is an international U18 rugby event for both boys and girls. Over the last five years since the event started in 2016 it has seen many players go onto higher honours. It is a competition that has seen both New Zealand rugby selected and coached teams participate in, as well as composite sides including the New Zealand Secondary School Condors selection team.

Over five hundred New Zealand based rugby players have competed in the last five years of the event. New Zealand Rugby sees the World Schools Sevens as part of its pathway identification programme with both the Talent ID division and High Performance sevens division of our organisation having a keen interest in the event.

Six players have gone onto higher honours since the inception of the tournament which often sees players being contracted into the All Black Sevens team and the Black Ferns Sevens who go onto compete in the HSBC Sevens World Series. The World School Sevens provides a strong competition for our next generation of players in order to continue their development as these young players aspire to higher honours whether that be the Olympics, HSBC Sevens World Series, World Cup or Commonwealth Games.

It brings together the elite boys and girls players who are under 18 years of age and gives them an opportunity to test themselves on a bigger stage against nations from Australia, Asia, USA, Canada the Pacific and further afield. NZ Rugby looks forward to supporting the World Schools Sevens this year and the years ahead.

Yours sincerely

Chris Lendrum General Manager, Professional Rugby and Performance
