Scottsdale Rd., Suite 201 jewishphoenix.org | [email protected] Scottsdale, AZ 85254 480.634.4900 | jewishphoenix.org When I look back on the last year as Chair of the Board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, one of the key words that comes to mind is community. I have called the Greater Phoenix community home for many years and have been an active member of its Jewish community for almost all of that time. It’s a community that has made Phoenix home, and I have come to appreciate more fully how the depth of our tradition and its commitment to community enriches my life and the lives of so many. Over the years I have been privileged to see its significant growth, both in the breadth of Jewish offerings and services and in the numbers of incredible people who work hard to secure them. I am proud to be part of this community, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. We continue to rally together to make real the words, Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh Bazeh, all of Israel are responsible for C one another. Through fully-committed blood drives to volunteers donating food for the resident food pantry at Kivel Campus of Care to close to $90,000 O of emergency financial support distributed to date to local Jewish organizations, our community commitment is strong. Additionally, as the pandemic continues, we also continue to convene these groups to share and learn about the greatest needs and how to M address them together. Our Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix will turn 80 years old in 2021. M While the words have changed over time, the mission has essentially remained the same. To create and sustain a vibrant Jewish community while providing for Jews in need. We actualize this timeless mission through engaging the next generation, enriching senior lives, helping U the vulnerable, wherever they reside, and by sending missions to Israel, which you’ll see highlighted in this report. As I write this, Phoenix has 16 young philanthropists participating in N JFNA’s National Young Leadership Cabinet, which for a community of our size is an outstanding achievement. They are the intelligent, innovative, upcoming leaders of this Jewish community and our future I is looking very bright! Whether you’re new to our Federation community or have been part of it for many years, we hope this report inspires you to remain committed T to supporting our important work. Y Thank you for making all of this possible. Sincerely, Howard R. From a men’s Interfaith group to a women’s MOMentum group to a young men’s group, spending time in Israel gave the participants an up-close view of our work there, and provided time for each participant to personally connect with the land and the people. In eight short days, participants enjoyed meeting with Israeli residents and organizations, touring cities including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, speaking to diplomats about the Israeli/American relationship, discussing Jewish traditions and customs with rabbis and religious leaders, and “One of the best parts about even visiting areas of political dispute and learning from experts on the this trip was hearing from complexities of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. local experts, each with varying perspectives and areas of focus.” MEN’S TRIP “We all gained a HIGHLIGHTS larger understanding Mark Khazanovich, Trip Participant of the challenges and opportunities the people of Israel face.” “One of the most enjoyable and impactful communal Jason Gladstone, trips I have experienced.” Trip Particpant Steven Schwarz, Trip Participant “The helicopter ride from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights allowed me to see Israel in a way that I’ve never experienced before.” Greg Saltz, Trip Participant JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PHOENIX 4 ANNUAL REPORT EMPOWERING WOMEN WITH RENEWED MOMENTUM Momentum seeks to inspire women to transform themselves, transform their families, their communities, and the world. The flagship program, the MOMentum Year-Long Journey, beginning with an eight-day trip to Israel, empowers women to connect to Jewish values, engage with Israel, take action, and foster unity, without uniformity. “Last November, the Jewish Federation of Phoenix gave me the opportunity to join 13 other women from Phoenix on what I would describe as a trip of a lifetime to Israel. The trip was one of the most meaningful and inspiring experiences that I have ever had. Momentum was 10 days filled with so many amazing experiences and overwhelming feelings shared with my Phoenix sisters and women from across the globe. We laughed, we cried, we connected with each other emotionally, and spiritually and built bonds that will last forever. I came home a more enriched person with a connection I never had before and a greater understanding as to what it means to be a Jew and a Jewish mother. Almost a year later, I still can’t stop telling friends and family members about Momentum. ” Natalie Stern, November 2019 Momentum Participant JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PHOENIX 5 ANNUAL REPORT Havana A TASTE OF JEWISH LIFE IN “We’ve always supported the Federation, and I was very impressed to see their efforts first hand. The work that the Federation and the JDC does is extremely important, and these CUBA communities would perish without it.” Gary Weiss, Trip Participant We have a responsibility of supporting Jewish communities in Phoenix, the United States, in Israel, and around the world. In honor of this mission, in November of 2019, the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix ventured to Havana, Cuba, a trip organized by the American Joint Distribution Committee, where participants got a taste of Jewish life in Havana. Participants attended a Shabbat dinner and service at El Patronato, a young adult-led Jewish synagogue in Cuba. The trip also extended past Jewish culture, and included tours of Cuban cigar factories, rum distilleries, and local establishments and museums. Perhaps the most meaningful part of the trip was the visit to Cementerio de la Union Hebrea Chevet Ahim, a Holocaust memorial and Jewish Sephardic cemetery. “We had such a great time in Cuba and it truly was like no other place we have ever been. What struck me most were the people and their friendly and welcoming attitudes... I hope more members of our Jewish community can continue to travel to Cuba, see the close knit Jewish community and provide needed support.” Bryan Kort, Trip Participant JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PHOENIX 6 ANNUAL REPORT YOUNG LEADERSHIP CABINET IN More than 120 young leaders MEXICO from around the country participated in JFNA’s Young Leadership Cabinet mission to Mexico City, gaining exposure and insight into Jewish life in CITY the region.
