Durrell School of Corfu Κερκυραικος Συνδεσµος Νταρελ ___________________________________________________________________________ 11 Filellinon Street, 49-100 Corfu, Greece Tel/Fax 30-26610-21326 e-mail [email protected] www.durrell-school-corfu.org PRESS INFORMATION The Durrell School of Corfu is pleased to announce its participation in the naming of the Corfu Bosketto as “Bosketto Durrell” and the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the brothers Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990) and Gerald Durrell (1925-1995). The plaque celebrates the fact that Lawrence Durrell and Gerald Durrell were “writers and Philhellenes”, and that they lived in Corfu 1935-1939. Lawrence Durrell was one of the most influential novelists of the twentieth century. In addition to being a significant poet, dramatist and travel writer, he wrote The Alexandria Quartet (1957- 60) which changed the direction of the modern novel, The Avignon Quintet (1974-85) which achieved a synthesis of western narrative style and eastern philosophy, and his personal evocation of Corfu, Prospero’s Cell (1945). Gerald Durrell was the founder of the Jersey Zoological Park (1959) and became one of the world’s leading experts and activists in the breeding of animals in danger of extinction in their natural habitat. A humorous and persuasive writer and broadcaster, he popularised his work with books such as A Zoo in my Luggage (1960). His own accounts of growing up in Corfu include The Garden of the Gods (1978) and the world-famous best-seller My Family and Other Animals (1956). Their books – and, in the case of My Family and Other Animals which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2006, in two films of the book by the BBC, in 1989 and 2005 – contributed significantly to the worldwide reputation of the island of Corfu and to the development of the Corfiot tourist industry.

He founded what is now called the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Jersey Zoo (now Durrell Wildlife Park) on the Channel Island of Jersey in 1958, but is perhaps best remembered for writing a number of books based on his life as an animal collector and enthusiast. He was the youngest brother of the novelist Lawrence Durrell. Early life and education Durrell was born in Jamshedpur, India on 7 January 1925. He was the fourth surviving and final child of Louisa Florence Dixie and Lawrence Samuel Durrell, both of whom were born in India of English and Irish descent. Durrell's father was a British engineer and as was commonplace and befitting family status, the infant Durrell spent most of his time in the company of an ayah (nursemaid). Durrell reportedly recalled his first visit to a zoo in India and attributed his lifelong love of animals to that encounter. The family moved to England after the death of his father in 1928 and settled in the Upper Norwood - Crystal Palace area of South London.

  • 2016 Summer Grant Report Mary Sanders Pollock, Professor of English [email protected] September 15, 2016
2016 Summer Grant Report Mary Sanders Pollock, Professor of English [email protected] September 15, 2016 a. Project title: Gerald Durrell: A New Biography b. Stated Goals: “During the summer grant period of 2016, I will write the first two chapters (outlined below) of a biography of Gerald Durrell (1925-95), an internationally respected conservationist and the author of more than thirty books--travel writing, memoir, environmental writing, and fiction.” [First chapter devoted to Gerald Durrell’s childhood on the Greek island of Corfu, second chapter to his teenage years in London during World War II.] c. Progress toward stated goals [results attached in Appendix]: I completed the second chapter and part of the third chapter. I produced the amount of work projected, but in a different form. Because my research travel to Corfu had to be delayed until 2017, I felt ill equipped to write about it. Instead of writing the first chapter, I began with the second chapter, a more thorough and detailed examination of Durrell’s London years than I anticipated because there were more primary materials and relevant theoretical work that I had not discovered when I wrote the grant application. As a result, this chapter is longer than originally planned. In addition, I wrote a section of the third chapter. The most significant work (and least visible) on the project absorbed my attention in May and June. After submitting the grant application, as I was writing a conference paper on a related topic (“Islomania, Island Biogeography, and the Durrell Literary Imagination”), it became clear to me that more grounding in cosmopolitan theory, as well as studies in immigration, exile, and refugee status would deepen and refine my initial assumptions about Gerald Durrell.

In the Footsteps of Lawrence Durrell and Gerald Durrell in Corfu Hilary Paipeti Free Bonus: A taste of the main text The Durrells in Corfu: The True Story Peter Harrison In the spring of 1935 Mrs Durrell and her three youngest children, Leslie, Margo and Gerald, arrived in Corfu for an extended stay. They had been preceded by Lawrence, the oldest son, who was in his twenties and married, and they all initially settled in Perama, south of Corfu Town. Mrs Durrell took up residence in the Strawberry Pink Villa. Later, Lawrence and his wife Nancy moved to Kalami and set up home in the White House. There was no Mr Durrell present because he had died in 1928 in India. However, he left his wife a legacy which in those days had the same value as half a million pounds has today. And the rest, as they say, is history. Or is it? Perhaps not. In the years that have passed since that event much has been written about the Durrells and the five years they spent in Corfu, 1935 to 1939. Most of it was written by the Durrells themselves. Yet there still remains many unanswered questions about this period, the main one being: Just how much of what has been written is true? This was a question I was able to put to Gerald Durrell myself in the 1970s, when I took a group of schoolboys to Gerald's zoo in Jersey. Gerald was kindness itself, to all of us, and he gave me answers to all the questions I had time to put to him.

Notes and References The majority of Lawrence Durrell's manuscripts and other private papers are located at the Special Collections, Morris Library, Southern Illinois Uni versity at Carbondale: they were largely acquired in two tranches, the first having been catalogued as Collection 42: references to this part of the Dur rell Archive will be made as follows: SIUC: 42/00/0, where the second set of digits indicates the box number and the third digit indicates the folio number within the box. Readers pursuing this material should also follow the catalogue of the collection made by Ian MacNiven, A Descriptive Cata logue of the Lawrence Durrell Collection at Southern Illinois University (Carbon dale, 1975), and, where necessary, supplemented by reference to Shelley Cox, The Lawrence Durrell Papers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale: Exhibit and Catalog (Carbondale 1988). In the case of the second, more recently acquired, part of the Archive, which includes a large portion of Durrell's working library, cataloguing had not been completed at the time of my research, and reference has been msade to SIUC/LD/ Accession II. In the case of items held by the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Lawrence Durrell at Sommieres, reference is made to the inventory entry as follows: CERLD: inv. 000 or, where the item is uncatalogued, to CERLD (uncata logued item), followed by a short description of the item. The pages in most notebooks are unnumbered, or have been numbered incorrectly during cataloguing; references to page numbers have been included only where there is no possibility of confusion as to the page intended: in most instances, these are Durrell's own markings.
