“I always said that I was a slave. I was like a sex slave. They just used me for whatever and I literally mean whatever.” This is a direct statement from Crystal Vallery, a human trafficking survivor in Tampa, Florida. In the documentary Too Close to Home: Human Trafficking in Tampa Bay, it was noted that Crystal’s trafficker sold her, along with five other girls ages nine to twelve, for sex and kept them chained in a basement. Human trafficking is a billion-dollar business, making it the second largest industry in the world. Florida, to the surprise of many, ranks third in the nation in regards to this crime. Many hotspots for human trafficking occur in south Florida because it’s easy to import individuals. However, many of these victims are not from foreign countries at all, but rather are citizens born in the United States.
