Sex and Shock Jocks: An Analysis of the Howard Stern and Bob & Tom Shows Lawrence Soley Diederich College of Communication, Marquette University Milwaukee, WI Abstract: Studies of mass media show that sexual content has increased during the past three decades and is now commonplace. Research studies have examined the sexual content of many media, but not talk radio. A subcategory of talk radio, called “shock jock” radio, has been repeatedly accused of being indecent and sexually explicit. This study fills in this gap in the literature by presenting a short history and an exploratory content analysis of shock jock radio. The content analysis compares the sexual discussions of two radio talk shows: Infinity’s Howard Stern Show and Clear Channel’s Bob & Tom Show. Introduction The quantity and explicitness of sexual content in mass media has steadily increased during the past three decades. Greenberg and Busselle (1996) found that sexual activities depicted in soap operas increased between 1985 and 1994, rising from 3.67 actions per hour in 1985 to 6.64 per hour in 1994.

Recently attended a guided tour of our museums’ galleries or participated in one of our family-friendly programs? If so, then you have most likely encountered the warmth and welcome of our dedicated Society volunteers. With almost 200 active participants, our volunteer core is stronger than ever! Society volunteers donate their time in roles ranging from docents, letterpress and public programs volunteers to positions with auxiliary groups such as the Black Historic Sites Committee and Glancy Trains – and more! In the last year, our volunteer program has introduced nine new volunteer roles, including retail, photography and graphic design opportunities. Society volunteers receive comprehensive training in their role, strong staff support and communication and an ongoing variety of volunteer opportunities. They gain first-hand knowledge of museum operations and receive exciting benefits and opportunities to further strengthen their love for Detroit! Introduction A fervent international debate is arousing around the issue of illegal distribution and consumption of contents (music, video, etc.), involving content producers, consumers, policy makers and other players of the so-called digital convergence (software developers, hardware producers, internet service providers, etc.). Generally being referred to as “piracy”, the phenomenon may in part be considered endogenous – some kind of natural imperfection (Shapiro, 1988) – to the rent exploitation possibilities generated by copyright on information goods. In the last decade, however, the advent of the digitization, the growth of the Internet, and the development of peer-to-peer platforms, has notably broadened the unauthorised distribution and consumption of contents, challenging the traditional industries structures. The paradoxical situation is that consumption of the so called information goods has increased dramatically, while the markets for content products have remained the same, when not collapsing. Faced with this phenomenon, most of the copyright owners react going to law, bringing actions against both suppliers and end-users of peer-to-peer platforms. Such litigations are currently made viable thanks to severe legislations and to technical tools able to collect evidences of illicit behaviours on peer-to-peer networks. We owe to the lobbying ability of traditional content providers to protect their business models the fact that the illegal distribution of content covers such a wide array of situations and that peer-to-peer dissemination and centralised distribution have been so far considered two distinct domains.

We, like many other media outlets, are going to a self managed web- based system that will allow you to go to a website and input status, date, days to run and additional text that will then be displayed on WHO, KXNO, KKDM-FM, KPTL-FM, and KDRB-FM websites, and available for on-air dissemination on WHO. As we tested the new system, we found the administrator section to be self-explanatory and relatively painless. Here are the basic steps: 1. Go to whoradio.com and click “Closings” on the horizontal navigation menu at the top of the page; 2. Click on the sign up link in the search box to the left. 3. Fill in the registration information and then click submit. (Your account will be reviewed and quickly approved by WHO staff.) 4. Once signed-in, you’re presented with options to: Update Closings List; Update Profile and Logout. Click “Update Closings List”, then “New Closing” to begin a new status messages for each of your facilities. 5. As activity status changes during the day, return to whoradio.com’s Closings section, logon with the username and password you selected and you will again be presented options to Update Closings List; Update Profile or Logout. Click “Update Closings List” then “Modify” adjacent to the record you want to change, updating any affected field pertaining to new class or activity status.
