Stardom: Industry of Desire 1
STARDOM What makes a star? Why do we have stars? Do we want or need them? Newspapers, magazines, TV chat shows, record sleeves—all display a proliferation of film star images. In the past, we have tended to see stars as cogs in a mass entertainment industry selling desires and ideologies. But since the 1970s, new approaches have explored the active role of the star in producing meanings, pleasures and identities for a diversity of audiences. Stardom brings together some of the best recent writing which represents these new approaches. Drawn from film history, sociology, textual analysis, audience research, psychoanalysis and cultural politics, the essays raise important questions for the politics of representation, the impact of stars on society and the cultural limitations and possibilities of stars. Commentary on Season 2, Eps. 1-5 of "Tracey Takes On..."
"Tracey Takes On..." Season 2 Episode Guide, Review and Commentary Part 1: Episodes 1 through 5 Compiled by Roger Reini ([email protected]) This is a detailed episode guide to, review of, and commentary on episodes 1 through 5 of the award-winning second season of TRACEY TAKES ON ..., the HBO series starring Tracey Ullman. Sprinkled throughout the guide are my commentaries and reviews of the various episodes, sketches and bits. OTHER EPISODE GUIDES Episode guides to other seasons can be found at http://www.rreini.com/tracey/, as can a concise episode guide for all seasons (no commentary, one-line descriptions of sketches). Episodes are listed in the order of their original airdate on HBO. 1. Sex (Jan 18 1997) OPENING SEQUENCE: Last year's opening of Tracey asleep in bed, free- associating words related to each week's topic, has been dropped in favor of a short monologue sequence featuring Tracey *as herself*, similar to what she did in the first two seasons of "The Tracey Ullman Show." This week, she tells us that she's not going to tell us about her sex life (it's more sexy to be alluring and keep the mystery). Her final words on the subject: "Bugger off! I ain't talking about shagging!" COMMENT: I welcome any development where we get to see more of Tracey as herself. I like her characters very much, but I also like her. THEME: Last year's theme has also been dropped. In its place, we have her 1984 hit "They Don't Know". This is the original recording; it's not been remade. -

Cupid ... arrow ... chocolate ... saccharine ... sugar rush ... sappy ... Love Boat ... Casablanca ... A Fine Romance. Then all of a sudden, BINGO! She's awake ("Yeah - I'll take that on!"), and we roll credits. 2018 Emmy® Awards Nominations for Programs
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2018 EMMY® AWARDS NOMINATIONS FOR PROGRAMS AIRING JUNE 1, 2017 – MAY 31, 2018 Los Angeles, CA, July 12, 2018– Nominations for the 70th Emmy® Awards were announced today by the Television Academy in a ceremony hosted by Television Academy Chairman and CEO Hayma Washington along with Samira Wiley from the Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale and Ryan Eggold from NBC’s upcoming drama, New Amsterdam. "It’s been another record-breaking year with more than 9,100 entries in 122 unique categories for the initial nomination round of voting,” said Washington. “The continued growth of the industry has provided opportunities for acclaimed new programs to emerge, while allowing last season’s break-through programs to thrive. In addition, 25 performers -- ranging from new discoveries to revered international stars -- have received their first-ever acting Emmy nomination across all categories of scripted programming. We are honored to recognize both television’s seasoned veterans and rising talents. “This year’s nominations continue to represent increased diversity and inclusion in front of the camera. And, there is a wealth of new and returning programs that reflect so many of today’s critical issues.” Among this year’s eight Outstanding Comedy Series nominees, there are three first-timers representing an exceptional range of storytelling. Freshman shows Barry, GLOW and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel join returning hits Atlanta, black-ish, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Silicon Valley and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The nominations in Outstanding Drama Series were again spread over distribution platforms, with returning nominees The Americans (FX) and Game Of Thrones (HBO) joining last season’s nominees The Crown (Netflix), The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu), Stranger Things (Netflix), This Is Us (NBC), and Westworld (HBO).
