Ecological Response of Some Iris L. Taxa (Iridaceae) in Turkey

TAXA (IRIDACEAE) IN TURKEY 1 2 NEZAHAT KANDEMIR*, ALI ÇELIK AND ABDULKADIR SÜRÜCÜ Department of Biology, Education Faculty, Amasya University, Amasya-Turkey Key words: Iris taxa, Endemic, Rare, Ecological properties, Relationship Abstract Ecological relationships of some Iris taxa belonging to subgenera Hermodactyloides (I. danfordiae, I. histrio subsp. aintabensis, I. histrio subsp. histrio, I. reticulata, I. bakeriana, I. pamphylica) and Scorpiris (I. aucheri and I. persica) have been compared and relationships between taxa have been determined. These taxa are geophytes and flower in Spring. I. danfordiae, I. pamphylica and subsp. aintabensis are endemic to Turkey. I. reticulata and I. persica have widespread distribution while I. aucheri, subsp. aintabensis, subsp. histrio, I. pamphylica and I. bakeriana have restricted distribution in Turkey. Soil samples of the taxa were collected during flowering periods and physical and chemical properties (texture class, total salinity %, pH, CaCO3 %, organic matter %, N %, P kg/da, K kg/da, Ca , Mg, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn ppm) were determined. The correlations between the soil analyses and taxa were evaluated using regression analysis. The P and CaCO3 values were found to be more effective than the other soil factors in the distributions of investigated taxa. Introduction Iris L. is one of the largest genus of Iridaceae family and comprises over 300 species in the world. They have been distributed in the Northern Hemisphere (Yu et al. 2009). RESUMEN Se han estudiado 35 de los taxones representados en el área Indicada, al M.O. y al M.E.B. La longitud de la abertura tiene valor taxonómico para sepa rar la sección Allium, con la abertura muy larga, de las otras secciones. Se ha observado una relación entre el aumento de tamaño del polen y el aumento del nivel poliploide. SUMMARY A palinological study of 35 taxa of Alliumirom the Iberian Península and Balearle Islands has been made. The length of the aperture has taxonomic va lué, it separates Sect. Allium, with very long aperture, from the other sec- tions. A relationship between polen size and polyploidy level has been obser- ved. INTRODUCCIÓN Este estudio se ha realizado como parte de una revisión del género Allium, tratando de obtener datos que pudieran ser utilizados en la taxonomía del grupo, a pesar de que se conocía de antemano el marcado carácter estenopolínico de la familia Liliáceas. Erdtman (1966: 236) indica para la tribu Allioideae, que los granos de polen son monosulcados y de longitud comprendida entre 37 - IByt (esto últi mo para Gagea lútea). 190 J- PASTOR Beug (1961, sec. W. Duyfjes, 1977: 13), describió el polen de 25 especies de Alliumáe origen europeo, indicando que las diferencias entre las distintas especies son pequeñísimas. Describió el polen como monosulcado, rectado- reticulado y de 30 - 40^. Observó también que en la sección Allium la única abertura es más larga que en el resto de las secciones. -

TURKISH SILK ROAD TRIP REPORT 2019 1 Day 1 6 May To Goreme We all arrived from various places to Cappadocia. Day 2 7 May Cappadocia I A fine clear morning revealed the remarkable convoluted landscape of Cappadocia – a blend of towers and smooth-eroded hills, some pink some cream. We met with our guide Gaye and set off for a quieter part of this popular region. Our first stop was near a small church and above this the path led to a fine lookout across the landscape including some amazing chimneys capped with dark hats of denser rock. Indeed, it is the rapid erosion of the various layers of compacted ash that have created this landscape, a legacy of the regions intensely volcanic past. There many Alpine Swifts sweeping overhead and a few interesting flowers with tufts of bluish Trigonella coerulescens, Silene conoidea, Euphorbia sp and big patches of Eruca sativa that were a magnet for the many Painted Ladies on the wing. We moved on to another site with an old monastery that still retained some very old frescoes and painted ceilings as well as a very old Seljuk mosque. Here there was plentiful Hypercoum pseudograndiflorum along the paths. Uta exchanged tips on bean cultivation with a local farmer who spoke a smattering of German before we left. Lunch was in a cherry orchard, thronging with butterflies as well as by chance, being next to a nesting Long-eared Owl which peered down at us the whole time we were there. Then it was onto see a special plant, crossing the undulating steppes and wheat fields to an innocuous-looking hill. -

MONTEZUMA-DE-CARVALHO * Botanical Institute, University of Coimbra INTRODUCTION NITROUS oxide (laughing gas, N20) has been found to induce c-mitosis in root tips of Pisum sativum at atmos- pheric pressure (ÕSTERGREN, 1944) and in Allium cepa at a pressure of six atmospheres (PERGUSON et al., 1950). Based on this c-effect N20 has been applied, by several authors, to zygotes at the time of its first cleavage in order to obtain polyploid plants (ÕSTERGREN, 1955 in Crepis capilla- ris; NYGREN, 1955 in Melandrium; ÕSTERGREN, 1957 in Pha- laris; KIHARA and TSUNEWAKI, 1960 in Triticum; ZEILING and SCHOUTEN, 1966 in Tulipa). It has also been shown that N20 readily induces, under pressure, c-mitosis in the pollen tubes in styles (MONTEZUMA-DE-CARVALHO, 1967). As far as we know no Work has been done on the effects of N20 on meiosis. In the present paper we describe some results that demonstrate that this gas can drastically change the course of meiosis by its property of spindle inhibition (c-effect). -

For this reason, identification of plant communities is important syntaxonomy. for understanding their ecology and nature conservation. This study aims to contribute the syntaxonomical classification of the Central Anatolian vegetation. Ključne besede: Aksaray, irano- The study area is situated among Güzelyurt, Narköy, and Bozköy (Niğde) in the turanska, Niğde, stepa, rastlinska east of Aksaray province of Central Anatolia in Turkey. The vegetation data were združba, obrečna vegetacija, collected using the phytosociological method of Braun-Blanquet and classified sintaksonomija. using TWINSPAN. The ecological characteristics of the units were investigated with Detrended Correspondence Analysis. Three new plant associations were described in the study. The steppe association was included in Onobrychido armenae-Thymetalia leucostomi and Astragalo microcephali-Brometea tomentelli. The forest-steppe association was classified under Quercion anatolicae in Quercetea pubescentis. The riparian association is the first poplar-dominated one described in Turkey and, classified under Alno glutinosae-Populetea albae and its alliance Populion albae. Izvleček Vegetacijo Srednje Anatolije najdemo na raznolikih rastiščih in je na majhnem območju vrstno zelo pestra. Identifikacija rastlinskih združb je zato pomembna za razumevanje njihove ekologije in naravovarstva. Raziskava je prispevek k sinataksonomski klasifikaciji vegetacije Srednje Anatolije. Preučevano območje obsega površino med mesti Güzelyurt, Narköy in Bozköy (Niğde) na vzhodu province Aksaray v Srednji Anatoliji v Turčiji. -

Allium Oleraceum (L.) Chevall
Allium oleraceum (L.) Chevall Field Garlic Allium oleraceum has light-green stems, two very long, pointed valves surrounding the inflorescence and flowers on long, untoothed pedicels. It is associated with dry, free-draining calcareous or weakly acid soils of low fertility, and found within both sunny grassland slopes, dune systems, roadside and arable verges, rocky outcrops and also in seasonally inundated meadow and riverbank habitat. It is widely scattered across south-west, central and northern England, more thinly so elsewhere, is rare in Wales and Scotland, and absent as a native from Ireland.
