  • 6 Telegraph Road — for Me It's Nearly 4,000
Telegraph Road — for me it’s nearly 4,000 mile long By Rick Astley Telegraph Road is certainly known to every member on the US side of the border and probably also by most who live in Canada . Although I didn’t know it at the time, long before I could reliably point to Detroit on a map, I was somewhat familiar with the road too. Back in the mid-80s, like most parents of teenagers, I would often have to ferry my eldest son to and from some activity or other, in our case, from our home in a small English village to the nearest town about 14 minutes away. Those 14 minutes are significant because it happened to be the same length as a track my son and I would love to play on the car’s cassette player, he on air guitar, me on dashboard drums, at a volume his mother wouldn’t have approved of. The track was called Telegraph Road and it was written and played by Dire Straits. The song’s length meant that it was never heard on the radio and the fact that it would often change mood, volume and tempo, made it impossible to dance to, so it was never played in clubs, or rather, discotheques as they were then known. The track, and Dire Straits’ music in general, became part of our father-son bonding. In fact years later, when my son was in college in Montreal, he bought tickets for my birthday to see the group at the Forum (at that time the Canadiens’ hockey arena).

  • Konkurs Poezji I Piosenki Irlandzkiej – Marzec 2021
Konkurs Poezji i Piosenki Irlandzkiej – marzec 2021 PATRONATY HONOROWE: Ambasada Irlandii w Warszawie Konsulat Irlandii w Poznaniu PATRONAT MEDIALNY: ORGANIZATOR I SPONSOR: Szkoła Języków Obcych Program sp. z o.o. www.angielskiprogram.edu.pl https://www.facebook.com/angielskiprogram.poznan SPONSORZY: 1 Szanowni Uczniowie! Zapraszam Was do wzięcia udziału w XVII edycji Konkursu Poezji Irlandzkiej, którego finał odbędzie się w Poznaniu 19 marca 2021 roku ( piątek) w Sali Kameralnej Szkoły Muzycznej II stopnia im. M. Karłowicza przy ul. Solnej w Poznaniu. Motto tegorocznego Konkursu to słowa Samuela Beckett’a ”If you do not love me, I shall not be loved. If I do not love you, I shall not love.”

  • Southeast Asia – Burma/Myanmar Instructor
COURSE SYLLABUS FOR ACADEMIC YEARS 2013-2014 AS 248: Southeast Asia – Burma/Myanmar Instructor: Lin Lin Aung Dept. of Asian Studies Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, VA 24401 E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Tel: 1-202-680-3925 Skype: llaung CORE AREAS: International Purpose: To introduce students to Burma/Myanmar’s modern history (late-1980s to present) and its recent/sudden democratic transition after five decades of military dictatorship. Background: Burma had been under the British colonial rule from 1885-1948 and gained independence in 1948. The military government took over power from the civilian government in 1962 and has controlled the country since then. In 1989, the military regime changed the name from Burma to Myanmar for political reasons. Aung San Suu Kyi’s return to Burma in 1988 changed the country’s political landscape as she has become the opposition leader and the symbol of Burma’s democratic movement. Her party won elections in 1990; however, they were not allowed to govern the country and she was put under house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi spent 15 of the past 21 years under house arrest and was released in November 2010. She decided to run in the 2012 by-elections and has become a Member of Parliament. Suffering from one of the world’s longest civil wars (between ethnic minorities and majority Burmans), Burma has become one of the least developed countries in Southeast Asia. In March 2011, a nominal civilian government has been established with Thein Sein appointed as President. REQUIREMENTS: The student must write four essays (maximum two -page, single-spaced) responding to each of the questions listed below.

  • Finding Grace in the Concert Hall: Community and Meaning Among Springsteen Fans
FINDING GRACE IN THE CONCERT HALL: COMMUNITY AND MEANING AMONG SPRINGSTEEN FANS By LINDA RANDALL A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY On Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS In the Department of Religion December 2008 Winston Salem, North Carolina Approved By: Lynn Neal, PhD. Advisor _____________________________ Examining Committee: Jeanne Simonelli, Ph.D. Chair _____________________________ LeRhonda S. Manigault, Ph.D _____________________________ ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, my thanks go out to Drs. Neal and Simonelli for encouraging me to follow my passion and my heart. Dr. Neal helped me realize a framework within which I could explore my interests, and Dr. Simonelli kept my spirits alive so I could nurse the project along. My concert-going partner in crime, cruisin’tobruce, also deserves my gratitude, sharing expenses and experiences with me all over the eastern seaboard as well as some mid-America excursions. She tolerated me well, right up until the last time I forgot the tickets. I also must recognize the persistent assistance I received from my pal and companion Zero, my Maine Coon cat, who spent hours hanging over my keyboard as I typed. I attribute all typos and errors to his help, and thank him for the opportunity to lay the blame at his paws. And lastly, my thanks and gratitude goes out to Mr. Bruce Frederick Springsteen, a man of heart and of conscience who constantly keeps me honest and aware that “it ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive (Badlands).”
