The Rajbongshis are spread across North Bengal, western Assam, Meghalaya and eastern parts of Bihar and the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Nepal. The Meiteis of Manipur have a similar instrument which they call the Pena and it plays a very important role in their culture - accompanying many of their rituals and their folk music. It continues to play a much larger role in their lives than the Bena does among the Rajbongshis. D. Geographical location and range of the element/cultural tradition (Please write about the other states in which the said element/tradition is present ) The Bena is to be found in the northern districts of Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri (which has recently been bifurcated into Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts) in West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar and also neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal. The Bena is traditionally an integral part of a Rajbongshi folk theatre called Kushan. However the Kushan tradition prevails only in North Bengal, Bangladesh and Assam. -

Raman Centre for Physics and Music Jadavpur University, Kolkata: 700032 *[email protected] * Corresponding Author ABSTRACT Categorization is crucial for content description in archiving of music signals. On many occasions, human brain fails to classify the instruments properly just by listening to their sounds which is evident from the human response data collected during our experiment. Some previous attempts to categorize several musical instruments using various linear analysis methods required a number of parameters to be determined. In this work, we attempted to categorize a number of string instruments according to their mode of playing using latest-state-of-the-art robust non-linear methods. For this, 30 second sound signals of 26 different string instruments from all over the world were analyzed with the help of non linear multifractal analysis (MFDFA) technique. The spectral width obtained from the MFDFA method gives an estimate of the complexity of the signal. From the variation of spectral width, we observed distinct clustering among the string instruments according to their mode of playing. Also there is an indication that similarity in the structural configuration of the instruments is playing a major role in the clustering of their spectral width. The observations and implications are discussed in detail. Anoushka Shankar: Breathing Under Water – ‘Burn’, ‘Breathing Under Water’ and ‘Easy’ (For component 3: Appraising) Background information and performance circumstances The composer Anoushka Shankar was born in 1981, in London, and is the daughter of the famous sitar player Ravi Shankar. She was brought up in London, Delhi and California, where she attended high school. She studied sitar with her father from the age of 7, began playing tampura in his concerts at 10, and gave her first solo sitar performances at 13. She signed her first recording contract at 16 and her first three album releases were of Indian Classical performances. Her first cross-over/fusion album – Rise – was released in 2005 and was nominated for a Grammy, in the Contemporary World Music category. Her albums since Breathing Under Water have continued to explore the connections between Indian music and other styles. She has collaborated with some major artists – Sting, Nithin Sawhney, Joshua Bell and George Harrison, as well as with her father, Ravi Shankar, and her half-sister, Norah Jones. She has also performed around the world as a Classical sitar player – playing her father’s sitar concertos with major orchestras. The piece Breathing Under Water was Anoushka Shankar’s fifth album, and her second of original fusion music. Her main collaborator was Utkarsha (Karsh) Kale, an Indian musician and composer and co-founder of Tabla Beat Science – an Indian band exploring ambient, drum & bass and electronica in a Hindustani music setting. Kale contributes dance music textures and technical expertise, as well as playing tabla, drums and guitar on the album. -

He is the creator of the Mohan Veena, which has modified the Hawaiian slide guitar by adding fourteen additional strings to it, and allows him to exquisitely assimilate the techniques of the sitar, sarod and veena. He is one of the foremost disciples of Pandit Ravi Shankar. He has captivated audiences at numerous concerts in the US, Canada, Europe, the Middle East and, of course, India. Among numerous other awards, he is the recipient of the Grammy Award, 1994, with Ry Cooder, for the World Music album, A Meeting by the River. Shanmukha Priya and Hari Priya (Vocal) with M.A. Krishnaswamy (Violin) and Skandasubramanian (Mridangam), April 26th , 2013, Friday, 7.00PM, place: TBA Shanmukha Priya and Hari Priya, the renowned musical duo popularly known as the “Priya Sisters”, are among the leading exponents of the Carnatic or South Indian vocal music. Since they began performing in 1989, the Priya Sisters have performed worldwide in more than two thousand concerts. Eliot’s poems written after his confirmation into the Anglo-Catholic Church of England in 1927. With this end in view, this unit takes up a close reading of two of his ‘Ariel Poems’ and focuses on some traits of his religious poetry. 1.1 Introduction Thomas Stearns Eliot was born on 26th September, 1888 at St. Louis, Missouri, an industrial city in the center of the U.S.A. He was the seventh and youngest child of Henry Ware Eliot and Charlotte Champe Stearns. He enjoyed a long life span of more than seventy-five years. His period of active literary production extended over a period of forty-five years. Eliot’s Calvinist (Puritan Christian) ancestors on father’s side had migrated in 1667 from East Coker in Somersetshire, England to settle in a colony of New England on the eastern coast of North America. His grandfather, W.G. Eliot, moved in 1834 from Boston to St. Louis where he established the first Unitarian Church. His deep academic interest led him to found Washington University there. He left behind him a number of religious writings. Eliot’s mother was an enthusiastic social worker as well as a writer of caliber. His family background shaped his poetic sensibility and contributed a lot to his development as a writer, especially as a religious poet. -

Fretted Instruments, Frets Are Metal Strips Inserted Into the Fingerboard
Fret A fret is a raised element on the neck of a stringed instrument. Frets usually extend across the full width of the neck. On most modern western fretted instruments, frets are metal strips inserted into the fingerboard. On some historical instruments and non-European instruments, frets are made of pieces of string tied around the neck. Frets divide the neck into fixed segments at intervals related to a musical framework. On instruments such as guitars, each fret represents one semitone in the standard western system, in which one octave is divided into twelve semitones. Fret is often used as a verb, meaning simply "to press down the string behind a fret". Fretting often refers to the frets and/or their system of placement. This is damped if the string were stopped with the soft fingertip on a fretless fingerboard. Frets make it much easier for a player to achieve an acceptable standard of intonation, since the frets determine the positions for the correct notes. Furthermore, a fretted fingerboard makes it easier to play chords accurately. A disadvantage of frets is that they restrict pitches to the temperament defined by the fret positions. -
