One important advantage of this approach is that it provides a physically-based alternative to the usual Wilson loop approach. Accordingly, we shall work out the static potential for electrodynamics which include, apart from the Maxwell Lagrangian, additional terms corresponding to the Uehling, massive Euler-Heisenberg-like, Euler-Heisenberg Electrodynamics in the approximation of the strong-field limit (to the leading logarithmic order) and for their non-commutative versions. Our results show a 1 long-range L5-type correction to the Coulomb potential for both massive Euler-Heisenberg-like and Euler-Heisenberg Electrodynamics in the approximation of the strong-field limit (to the leading logarithmic order). Interestingly enough, 1 for massive Euler-Heisenbeg-like electrodynamics (Whichmann-Kroll) we obtain a new long-range L3 correction to the interaction energy. Nevertheless, for their non-commutative versions, the static potential becomes ultraviolet finite. The organization of the paper is as follows: In Section II, we reexamine Uehling Electrodynamics in order to establish a framework for the computation of the static potential. In Section III we consider Euler-Heisenberg-like (with a mass term) and show that it yields birefringence, compute the interaction energy for a fermion-antifermion pair and its version in the presence of a minimal length. In Section III, we repeat our analysis for Euler-Heisenberg Electrodynamics in the approximation of the strong-field limit. Finally, in Section IV, we cast our Final Remarks. In our conventions the signature of the metric is (+1, 1, 1, 1). − − −
II. BRIEF REVIEW ON THE UEHLING POTENTIAL
As already expressed, we now reexamine the interaction energy for Maxwell theory with an additional term cor- responding to the Uehling correction (Uehling Electrodynamics). This would not only provide the setup theoretical for our subsequent work, but also fix the notation. To do that we will calculate the expectation value of the energy operator H in the physical state Φ , which we will denote by H Φ. We start off our analysis by considering the effective Lagrangian density [41]: | i h i 1 α = F 1 ∆ F µν , (1) L −4 µν − 3π M where 2 ∞ 1 2m 4m2 (m, x)= dτ 1+ 1 , (2) M 2 τ (τ + ∆) τ − τ Z4m r µ with ∆ ∂µ∂ . It should be noted that contains the effect of vacuum polarization to first order in the fine 2 ≡ e M structure constant, α = ~c , and, m, is the electron mass. To obtain the corresponding Hamiltonian, we will carry out the quantization of the theory using the Hamiltonian formalism. In this way, the canonical momenta are found to be Πµ = 1 α ∆ F µ0, and one immediately identifies − 3π M the primary constraint Π0 = 0, whereas the momenta are Πi = 1 α ∆ Ei (with E = F ). Accordingly, the − 3π M i i0 canonical Hamiltonian HC is 1 1 1 H = d3x Πi∂ A Π 1 α ∆ − Πi + F 1 α ∆ F ij . (3) C i 0 − 2 i − 3π M 4 ij − 3π M Z 0 i As usual, requiring the primary constraint Π to be stationary, leads to the secondary constraint Γ1 ∂iΠ = 0. It is straightforward to check that there are no further constraints in the theory. Hence, the extended≡ Hamiltonian 3 that generates translations in time then reads H = HC + d x (u0(x)Π0(x)+ u1(x)Γ1(x)), where uo(x) and u1(x) are arbitrary Lagrange multipliers. With the aid of equation (3) we find that A˙ (x) = [A (x) ,H]= u (x), which is R 0 0 0 an arbitrary function. Since Π0 = 0 always, neither A0 nor Π0 are of interest in describing the system and may be discarded from the theory. Therefore, the Hamiltonian becomes
1 1 1 H = d3x w(x)∂ Πi Π 1 α ∆ − Πi + F 1 α ∆ F ij , (4) i − 2 i − 3π M 4 ij − 3π M Z where w(x)= u1(x) A0(x). According to the usual− procedure, we impose a gauge condition such that the full set of constraints becomes second class. A convenient choice is 1 Γ (x) dzν A (z) dλxiA (λx)=0. (5) 2 ≡ ν ≡ i CZξx Z0 3 where λ (0 λ 1) is the parameter describing the spacelike straight path zi = ξi + λ (x ξ)i, and ξ is a fixed point (reference point).≤ ≤ There is no essential loss of generality if we restrict our considerations to−ξi = 0. The Dirac brackets can now be determined and we simply note the only nontrivial Dirac bracket involving the canonical variables, that is,
1 A (x) , Πj (y) ∗ = δj δ(3) (x y) ∂x dλxiδ(3) (λx y) . (6) i i − − i − Z 0 In passing we also recall that the transition to a quantum theory is made by the replacement of the Dirac brackets by the operator commutation relations according to A, B ∗ ( i/~)[A, B]. With the foregoing information, we can now proceed{ to} obtain→ − the interaction energy. As already mentioned, in order to accomplish this purpose, we will calculate the expectation value of the energy operator H in the physical state Φ , where the physical states Φ are gauge-invariant ones. The physical state can be written as | i | i y iq i Φ Ψ(¯ y)Ψ(y′) = ψ¯(y)exp( dz A (z))ψ(y′) 0 , (7) | i≡ ~ i | i Zy′ where 0 is the physical vacuum state and the line integral appearing in the above expression is along a space-like path starting| i at y and ending at y, on a fixed time slice. Making use of the′ above Hamiltonian structure [18], we find that
y′ (3) Π (x) Ψ (y) Ψ (y′) = Ψ (y) Ψ (y′) Π (x) 0 + q dz δ (z x) Φ . (8) i i | i i − | i Zy
With the aid of equations (8) and (4), the lowest-order modification in α of the interaction energy takes the form H = H + V + V , (9) h iΦ h i0 1 2 where H = 0 H 0 . The V , V terms are given by h i0 h | | i 1 2 2 y y q 3 i (3) i (3) V = d x dz δ (x z) dz′ δ (x z′) , (10) 1 2 − − Z Zy′ Zy′ and
2 y′ y′ q α ∞ ρ (τ) 3 (3) 2 1 i (3) V2 = dτ d x dzi′δ (z′ x) x dz δ (z x) , (11) 2 3π 2 τ − ∇ τ 2 − Z4m Z Zy − ∇x Zy
2 2 where ρ (τ)= 1+ 2m 1 4m . τ − τ We note that the term q (10) may look peculiar, but it is nothing but the familiar Coulomb interaction plus a self- √τ z z 1 e− | − ′| energy term [42]. Now making use of the Green function, G (z, z′)= , the term (11) can be rewritten in 4π z z′ the form | − |
2 y′ y′ 2 √τ y y′ q α ∞ ρ (τ) 2 i α q ∞ ρ (τ) e− | − | V2 = dτ dzi′ z dz G (z, z′)= dτ . (12) 2 3π 2 τ ∇ ′ −3π 2 2 τ y y Z4m Zy Zy Z4m | − ′| Since the second and third term on the right-hand side of Eq. (9) are clearly dependent on the distance between the external static fields, the potential for two opposite charges located at y and y reads ′ 2 q 1 α ∞ ρ (τ) √τL V = 1+ dτ e− , (13) −4π L 3π 2 τ Z4m where L = y y′ . Accordingly, one recovers the known Uehling potential, which finds here an entirely different derivation. | − | Before we proceed further, we wish to show that this result can be written alternatively in a more explicit form. Making use of [43]
tz ∞ e 1 1 χ (z)= dt − 1+ 1 , (14) n tn 2t2 − t2 Z1 r 4 we then get
q2 1 2α V = 1+ χ (2mL) . (15) −4π L 3π 1
By the transformation, t = cosh u [44], the functions χn can be reduced to the form [43]: 1 1 χn (z)= Kin 1 (z) Kin+1 (z) Kin+3 (z) , (16) − − 2 − 2 where the functions Ki denote Bessel function integrals. Hence we see that the interaction energy (with m = 1) becomes
2 2 3 3 q 1 2α L 5L 2L 3L 2L ∞ V = 1+ 1+ K (2L) + K (2L)+ + dtK (t) , (17) −4π L 3π 3 0 − 3 3 1 2 3 0 Z2L where K0(z) and K1(z) are modified Bessel functions. Finally, with the aid of asymptotic forms for Bessel functions, it is a simple matter to find expressions for V for large and small L. Before concluding this subsection we discuss an alternative way of stating our previous result (13), which displays certain distinctive features of our methodology. We start by considering [42, 45]
V q ( (0) (L)) , (18) ≡ A0 − A0 where the physical scalar potential is given by
1 (t, r)= dλriE (t, λr). (19) A0 i Z0 This follows from the vector gauge-invariant field expression
x (x) A (x)+ ∂ dzµA (z) , (20) Aµ ≡ µ µ − µ Zξ where the line integral is along a space-like path from the point ξ to x, on a fixed slice time. It is also important to observe that the gauge-invariant variables (19) commute with the sole first constraint (Gauss law), showing in this way that these fields are physical variables. Inasmuch as we are interested in estimating the lowest-order correction 1 i α − i to the Coulomb energy, we will retain only the leading term in expression E = 1 3π ∆ Π . Making use of this last expression, equation (19) gives − M 1 0 1 0 i J α ∞ dτ i J 0(t, r)= dλr ∂i + ρ (τ) dλr ∂i , (21) A − 2 3π 2 τ − 2 τ Z0 ∇ λr Z4m Z0 ∇ − λr i 0 to get the last line we used Gauss law for the present theory, that is, ∂iΠ = J (where we have included the external current J 0 to represent the presence of two opposite charges). Accordingly, for J 0(t, r) = qδ(3) (r), the potential for a pair of static point-like opposite charges located at 0 and L, is given by
2 q 1 α ∞ ρ (τ) √τL V = 1+ dτ e− , (22) −4π L 3π 2 τ Z4m after substracting a self-energy term.
III. EULER-HEISENBERG-LIKE MODEL
Proceeding in the same way as we did in the foregoing section, we shall now consider the interaction energy for Euler-Heisenberg-like electrodynamics. Nevertheless, in order to put our discussion into context it is useful to describe very briefly the model under consideration. In such a case the Lagrangian density reads:
β2 1 1 p = 1 1+ 2 , (23) L 2 − β2 F − β2γ2 G 5
1 µν 1 ˜µν where have included two parameters β and γ. As usual, = 4 Fµν F , = 4 Fµν F , Fµν = ∂µAν ∂ν Aµ and ˜µν 1 µνρλ F G − F = 2 ε Fρλ. Let us also mention here that in our previous paper [19] we have studied the domain 0
µν ∂µF˜ =0, (25) where 2 Γ=1+ F G . (26) β2 − β2γ2 Also, it is straightforward to see that Gauss law becomes, D =0, (27) ∇ · where D is given by
E2 B2 (E B)2 2 D = 1 − · E + (E B) B . (28) − 2β2 − β2γ2 γ2 · " # 0 (3) Q e Again, from equation (27), for J (t, r) = eδ (r), we find D = r2 rˆ, where Q = 4π . This then implies that for a point-like charge, e, at the origin, the expression Q E2 = 1 E , (29) r2 − 2β2 | | tells us that, for r 0, the electrostatic field becomes singular at r = 0, in contrast to the 0
