The beaux arts structure is now home to the Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires. For the property, EDG Interior Architecture + Design conceived a restaurant and polo-themed bar that take aesthetic cues from the mansion itself and other turn-of-the-century residences nearby. Evocative of an open courtyard, the two-story main dining room showcases the firm’s twist on traditional checkerboard flooring: honed Carrara marble tile dry-laid in a herringbone pattern. Patrons ascend to the mezzanine by way of a curving steel staircase. Loads of tableware or wine bottles, however, are conveyed up and down via a more whimsical mode of transport: a hand-cranked dumbwaiter. Hand-tooled leather wall cladding nods to gaucho culture, as do the semicircular booths surrounded by partitions made of vertical leather straps that approximate bridle reins. The neighboring Pony Line bar-lounge is replete with alpaca silver detailing and parchment-clad steamer trunks reworked as cocktail tables. The firm’s favorite aspect of the project? The “secret” link between restaurant and lounge: A black-and-white marble path leads past the bar and pantry and through the kitchen, like a butler’s back stair. Clockwise from opposite: Carrara marble accents the exhibition kitchen. The restaurant’s dry-laid marble herringbone floor was carefully honed to a level surface. Hammered alpaca silver, inset with strips of horn, clads a wall behind the bar at Pony Line. In the pantry passage, leading from Elena to Pony Line, open shelves display tableware.
