Changing minds: Discussions in neuroscience, psychology and education The science of learning is an interdisciplinary field that is of great interest to educators who often want to understand the cognitive and physiological processes underpinning student development. Research from neuroscience, psychology and education often informs our ideas about the science of learning, or ‘learning about learning’. However, while research in these three areas is often comprehensive, it’s not always presented in a way that is easily comprehensible. There are many misconceptions about neuroscience, psychology and education research, which have been perpetuated through popular reporting by the media and other sources. These in turn have led to the development of ideas about learning and teaching that are not supported by research. That’s why the Centre for Science of Learning @ ACER has launched the paper series, Changing Minds: Discussions in neuroscience, psychology and education. The Changing Minds series addresses the need for accurate syntheses of research. The papers address a number of topical issues in education and discuss the latest relevant research findings from neuroscience, psychology and education. Changing Minds does not provide an exhaustive review of the research, but it does aim to provide brief syntheses of specific educational issues and highlight current or emerging paradigms for considering these issues across and within the three research fields. -

Two experiments were designed to test whether state dissociation is related to objective memory disturbances, or whether dissociation is confined to the realm of subjective experience. High trait dissociative participants (Nexp:1 ¼ 25; Nexp:2 ¼ 25) and low trait dissociative participants (Nexp:1 ¼ 25; Nexp:2 ¼ 25) were selected from normal samples (Nexp:1 ¼ 372; Nexp:2 ¼ 341) on basis of scores on the Dissociative Experience Scale (DES). Participants watched an extremely aversive film, after which state dissociation was measured by the Peri-traumatic Dissociative Experience Questionnaire (PDEQ). Memory disturbances were assessed 4h later (Exp. 1) or 1 week later (Exp. 2). Objective memory disturbances were assessed by a sequential memory task, items tapping perceptual representations (Exp. 1), or an open question with respect to the remembrance of the film (Exp. 2). Subjective memory disturbances were measured by means of visual analogue scales assessing fragmentation and intrusions. CYBERBULLIES ON CAMPUS Darby Dickerson * I. INTRODUCTION A new challenge facing educators is how to deal with the high-tech incivility that has crept onto our campuses. Technology has changed the way students approach learning, and has spawned new forms of rudeness. Students play computer games, check e-mail, watch DVDs, and participate in chat rooms during class. They answer ringing cell phones and dare to carry on conversations mid-lesson. Dealing with these types of incivilities is difficult enough, but another, more sinister e-culprit-the cyberbully-has also arrived on law school campuses. Cyberbullies exploit technology to control and intimidate others on campus.' They use web sites, blogs, and IMs2 to malign professors and classmates.3 They craft e-mails that are offensive, boorish, and cruel. They blast professors and administrators for grades given and policies passed; and, more often than not, they mix in hateful attacks on our character, motivations, physical attributes, and intellectual abilities.4 They disrupt classes, cause tension on campus, and interfere with our educational mission. -

Bionomics to Trial Drug Against Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
ABN 53 075 582 740 ASX ANNOUNCEMENT 30 June 2016 BIONOMICS TO TRIAL DRUG AGAINST POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER Trial to examine effects of Bionomics’ drug candidate BNC210 on PTSD No current effective treatments for PTSD 5-10% of population will suffer PTSD at some point ADELAIDE, Australia, 30 June 2016: Bionomics Limited (ASX:BNO; OTCQX:BNOEF), a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of innovative therapeutics for the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system and cancer, has initiated a Phase II clinical trial with its drug candidate BNC210 in adults suffering Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The study’s primary objective is to determine whether BNC210 causes a decrease in symptoms of PTSD as measured by the globally-accepted Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS-5). Secondary objectives include the determination of the effects of BNC210 on anxiety, depression, quality of life, and safety. This clinical study will recruit 160 subjects with PTSD at 8-10 clinical research centres throughout Australia and New Zealand. The study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design with subjects to be treated over 12 weeks with BNC210 or placebo. The Principal Investigator is Professor Jayashri Kulkarni from the Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia. PTSD is very common and its societal and economic burden extremely heavy. It is estimated that 5-10% of the general population will suffer from PTSD at some point in their lives. There is a need for further and improved pharmacotherapy options for people with PTSD. Currently, only two drugs, the antidepressants paroxetine and sertraline, are approved for the treatment of PTSD. -

That wiring causes your body to react in certain ways and for you to have certain urges when the emotion arises. Here is a list of primary emotions: Eight Primary Emotions Anger: fury, outrage, wrath, irritability, hostility, resentment and violence. Sadness: grief, sorrow, gloom, melancholy, despair, loneliness, and depression. Fear: anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, dread, fright, and panic. Joy: enjoyment, happiness, relief, bliss, delight, pride, thrill, and ecstasy. Interest: acceptance, friendliness, trust, kindness, affection, love, and devotion. Surprise: shock, astonishment, amazement, astound, and wonder. Disgust: contempt, disdain, scorn, aversion, distaste, and revulsion. Shame: guilt, embarrassment, chagrin, remorse, regret, and contrition. All other emotions are made up by combining these basic 8 emotions. Sometimes we have secondary emotions, an emotional reaction to an emotion. We learn these. Some examples of these are: o Feeling shame when you get angry. o Feeling angry when you have a shame response (e.g., hurt feelings). o Feeling fear when you get angry (maybe you’ve been punished for anger). There are many more. These are NOT wired into our bodies and brains, but are learned from our families, our culture, and others. When you have a secondary emotion, the key is to figure out what the primary emotion, the feeling at the root of your reaction is, so that you can take an action that is most helpful. . -

Pathological dissociation has been conceptualized as a response to antecedent traumatic stress and/or severe psychological adversity. Others have proposed that dissociation makes individuals prone to fantasy, thereby engendering confabulated memories of trauma. We examine data related to a series of 8 contrasting predictions based on the trauma model and the fantasy model of dissociation. In keeping with the trauma model, the relationship between trauma and dissociation was consistent and moderate in strength, and remained significant when objective measures of trauma were used. Dissociation was temporally related to trauma and trauma treatment, and was predictive of trauma history when fantasy proneness was controlled. Dissociation was not reliably associated with suggestibility, nor was there evidence for the fantasy model prediction of greater inaccuracy of recovered memory. -

Therefore, the possibility of modifying autobiographical memories, in particular with memory-modulation and memory-erasing, is a very important topic both from the theoretical and from the practical point of view. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the state of the art of some of the most promising areas of memory-modulation and memory-erasing, considering how they can affect the self and the overall balance of the “self and autobiographical memory” system. Indeed, different conceptualizations of the self and of personal identity in relation to autobiographical memory are what makes memory-modulation and memory-erasing more or less desirable. In The Great Brain Race: How Global Universities Are Reshaping the World author Ben Wildavsky explores the “globalisation” of higher education. Wildavsky argues that academics and students alike must view the global system of higher education as a form of international trade. Moreover, in this system, nations act in accordance with liberal economic theory entering into agreements to maximize benefits of the global economy. An advocate for academic free trade, Wildavsky explores this thesis through six chapters to outline the processes that have created this new system. Wildavsky examines how Western universities have tried to capitalize on the advancements in academic mobility. Wildavsky dives into the evolution of academic mobility with the early movement of traveling scholars in the 13th century. As students and faculty are able to easily move around the globe, institutions continue to globalise their activities and ambitions. This has compelled Western universities to establish branch institutions throughout the Middle East and Asia. Wildavsky believes that the continuously changing realities of the global system of higher education have led to behavioral change of states themselves. For example, like China, India, Saudi Arabia, Germany and France all have made lofty investments in higher education so that their institutions can compete with Western “World Class Universities”. Moreover, Wildavsky argues that the consequence of the race to achieve “World Class” status has contributed to the explosion of university rankings systems. These lists have increased in popularity since the 1990s and allow students and universities to determine how universities compare at the national and global level. -

Lemer Dacher Keltner Carnegie Mellon University University of California, Berkeley Drawing on an appraisal-tendency framework (J. S. Lerner & D. Keltner, 2000), the authors predicted and found that fear and anger have opposite effects on risk perception. Whereas fearful people expressed pessimistic risk estimates and risk-averse choices, angry people expressed optimistic risk estimates and risk-seeking choices. These opposing patterns emerged for naturally occurring and experimentally induced fear and anger. Moreover, estimates of angry people more closely resembled those of happy people than those of fearful people. Consistent with predictions, appraisal tendencies accounted for these effects: Appraisals of certainty and control moderated and (in the case of control) mediated the emotion effects. As a complement to studies that link affective valence to judgment outcomes, the present studies highlight multiple benefits of studying specific emotions.
