Ohio election update – Results of key statewide races November 4, 2014 On November 4, Ohio voters cast ballots in the 2014 general election. Statewide offices — governor, secretary of state, treasurer, auditor, attorney general and two Supreme Court seats — were on the ballot. Results of the statewide races, as they are called, are provided below. Governor Incumbent John Kasich was successful in his bid for another term as Ohio’s governor, beating challenger Ed FitzGerald. Secretary of State Incumbent Jon Husted was successful against State Senator Nina Turner (D-Cleveland). Treasurer In one of the more closely contested races, incumbent Josh Mandel held off a challenge from State Representative Connie Pillich (D-Cincinnati) to retain his spot as Ohio’s Treasurer for another term. Auditor Ohio voters gave incumbent Dave Yost another term as auditor. Auditor Yost faced a challenge from State Representative John Patrick Carney (D-Columbus). Attorney General Attorney General Mike DeWine won reelection over challenger David Pepper. Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy defeated challenger Tom Letson (D-Warren). In a closely contested race, Justice Judi French defeated challenger Judge John O’Donnell, a current sitting judge on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. 2nd Congressional District Incumbent Brad Wenstrup was successful against Democrat Marek Tyszkiewicz. 3rd Congressional District Incumbent Joyce Beatty defeated Republican John Adams. 4th Congressional District Incumbent Jim Jordan defeated Democrat Janet Garrett. 5th Congressional District Incumbent Bob Latta defeated Democrat Robert Fry and Libertarian Eric Eberly. 6th Congressional District Incumbent Bill Johnson has earned a second term in office, defeating Democrat Jennifer Garrison. Brown Introduces Bill to Repeal 'Cadillac Tax'
Brown introduces bill to repeal ‘Cadillac Tax’ Efforts to repeal the 40 percent excise tax on employer-sponsored health coverage (sometimes referred to as the “Cadillac tax”) recently received a big boost as the Senate introduced two bills to repeal the controversial tax that will impact many counties when it goes into effect in 2018. S. 2075, the American Worker Health Care Tax Relief Act of 2015 – Introduced by Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, S. 2075 repeals the tax but includes a non-binding “Sense of the Senate” clause demanding that any repeal include an offset. S. 2045, the Middle Class Health Benefits Tax Repeal Act of 2015 is bipartisan legislation to repeal the excise tax. Previously, on the House side two bills were introduced: H.R. 2050, the Middle Class Health Benefits Tax Repeal Act, which is co-sponsored by Ohio Reps. Joyce Beatty, Marcia Fudge, David Joyce, Marcy Kaptur and Tim Ryan, and H.R. 879, Ax the Tax on Middle Class Americans, which is co-sponsored by Ohio Reps. Steve Chabot, Bob Gibbs, Bill Johnson, David Joyce, Steve Stivers, Pat Tiberi and Brad Wenstrup. Together, the two House bills have more than 240 co-sponsors. NACo/CCAO supports all legislative efforts to repeal the excise tax on employer-sponsored health coverage, and encourages county officials to contact their congressional representatives to urge them to do the same. The tax, a provision in the 2010 Affordable Care Act, will impose a 40 percent excise tax on the amount of employer-sponsored coverage that exceeds statutorily established thresholds. It applies to all employers, public and private, and is projected to significantly impact the health coverage provided to employees as employers implement changes to avoid the excise tax in 2018 and beyond.

House Passes Bill to Help Newborns Suffering from Opiate Dependency
House passes bill to help newborns suffering from opiate dependency The Protecting Our Infants Act of 2015 (H.R. 1462), legislation that takes proactive steps to help hospitals diagnose and treat newborns suffering from opiate dependency, has passed the U.S. House. The bill was sponsored by Reps. Steve Stivers (Dist. 15-Hilliard) and Katherine Clark (MA). Over the years there has been a significant rise in the abuse of opiates, which has led to an alarming increase of babies born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). NAS is a collection of symptoms that infants can experience as a result of prenatal exposure to drugs such as heroin, methadone and prescription painkillers. Upon being born, this exposure to the drug ends and the babies begin to suffer from withdrawal. The Protecting Our Infants Act of 2015 is a targeted effort to make NAS a national priority by bringing together the appropriate experts and data to develop a coordinated response. The bill requires the Department of Health and Human Services to develop a best practices handbook for dealing with NAS and designate an agency to collect NAS data. Other Ohio representatives signing on as co-sponsors include Joyce Beatty (Dist.3-Columbus), Marcia Fudge (Dist.11-Warrensville Heights), Bill Johnson (Dist. 6-Marietta), David Joyce (Dist. 14-Painesville), Marcy Kaptur (Dist. 9-Toledo), Tim Ryan (Dist. 13-Warren), Pat Tiberi (Dist. 12- Columbus) and Mike Turner (Dist. 10-Dayton). The bill now heads to the U.S. Senate where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) have introduced companion legislation.

It is scenic and primarily undeveloped. Employment in the county is predominantly in the service industry, resort operations and government. CO Cory Gardner, Scott Tipton San Isabel Electric Association $15,836,000 This Rural Development investment will be used to build 63 miles of line, improve 143 miles and Michael Bennet (03) make other system improvements. The loan amount includes $752,021 for smart grid projects. San Isabel is headquartered in Pueblo. It provides electric service to customers in most of Huerfano and Las Animas counties, southern Pueblo county, eastern Custer and Southwestern Otero counties, as well as to a limited number of customers in Costilla County. San Isabel's service territory is predominately driven by trade and services industries, as well as coal mining, oil and gas development, recreational activities and agriculture. FL Bill Nelson, Kathy Castor Seminole Electric Cooperative $26,231,000 This Rural Development investment will be used to finance renovation projects at the headquarters. Marco Rubio (14) Seminole's nine-member distribution electric cooperatives provide service to portions of 46 counties in Florida. It is one of the largest generation and transmission cooperatives in the country.
