Fernandez opened his routine to “The Barber of Seville” with a quadruple toeloop followed by a triple Salchow-triple toeloop combination and a triple Axel and three other triple jumps, however, he crashed on the quad Salchow and doubled the Lutz. The two-time World bronze medalist collected a level four for three spins and a level three for the footwork to score 173.25 points. He racked up 262.49 points overall. “This medal is more important than a regular European medal because it's three times in a row. Maybe I didn't do my best performance ever but it's a little bit more special than other medals as since 1989 nobody has won three European medals in a row”, the ISU Grand Prix Final silver medalist commented. Performing to “Exogenesis Symphony” by Muse, Kovtun struggled at the beginning with his quad Salchow, quad toe and triple Axel, but recovered to hit five triples and three level-four spins. The Russian Champion picked up 157.47 points and totaled 235.68 points to pull up from fourth to second.

Deutsche Eislauf-Union e.V.

Skaters/couples need to have obtained a minimum total technical score in Short Program and Free Skating in order to compete at the European Championships. Javier Fernandez (ESP) wins Men’s Short Program Spain’s Javier Fernandez took the first step to defending his European title by winning the Men’s Short Program. Sergei Voronov of Russia sits in second followed by Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic. Skating to “Black Betty” by Ram Jam, Fernandez hit a good triple Axel, but fell out of his quad Salchow and stepped out of the triple Lutz-triple toe combination. The two-time European Champion recovered to pick up a level four for the spins and footwork and scored 89.24 points. “I dealt with the pressure well today, this time my problem was that I was too relaxed, in fact Brian (Orser, coach) said to me that I was working at "level 2" (second gear), sometimes it is very difficult to find a good balance between being very excited and/or skating too relaxed”, the World bronze medalist noted.

  • E Ice and E Edge Volume I, Issue I Summer 2013
e Ice and e Edge Volume I, Issue I Summer 2013 Editor’s Note Dear readers, fans, and fellow " gure skaters, Words can hardly describe the anticipation and excitement with which I present to you the very " rst edition of e Ice and e Edge magazine, a one- woman endeavor at providing a fresh and fascinating take on the world of com- petitive " gure skating. From conception to logistics to publication, this project has been months in the making, and I consider it the utmost privilege to be able to share it with you. Ever since the love for the ice rooted itself into my mind some decade or so ago, I’ve sought a way to demonstrate this interest to the rest of the world. I’ve joined online skating communities, volunteered with competitions at my local rink, and created a blog on which to share this magazine with a wider audience. Ultimately, however, my purpose is simple. It’s not about triple Axels, embar- rassing costumes, or even the crowning glory of the Olympic skate-of-a-lifetime (I’m looking at you, 2010 Yuna Kim). It’s not about the joy of skating. My mission statement is that the sensation of being a fan of " gure skating, both in the current cycle and as a starry-eyed spectator of earlier eras, has never failed to provide me with an incomparable sense of wonder. No matter what cri- ses might have enveloped me at the time, " gure skating has always been ready to assume the role of a comforter, a therapist, or simply a pillow on which to rest my head at the end of a tiring day.
