All problems have an 8-minute time limit. Problem 1: OMER to the Rescue Again Who better to help those in distress than OMER? In this problem, OMER and his trusty Sidekick travel to dif- ferent places with suitcases holding all of the parts of an OMER-mobile vehicle! OMER and his Sidekick will assemble and ride on the vehicle where it will function in diff erent ways to “save the day.” Between attempts, the vehicle will be disassembled, put back into the suitcases, and taken to a diff erent area where it will be reassem- bled and driven again. Finally, the OMER-mobile is thrown a hero’s parade as a show of appreciation! Divisions I, II & III Problem 2: Hide in Plain Sight Teams take a cue from nature in this problem where they create and build a team-made mechanical creature that hides in plain sight. The creature will change its appearance three times to avoid being detected by a Searcher Character trying to fi nd it. The way the creature changes will be diff erent each time! The team will create and present a performance where its creature gets into – or out of – various situations using this resourceful skill. In the end the creature will surprise everyone by changing its appearance a fi nal time and reveal its true self. Divisions I, II, III & IV Problem 3: Classics… Leonardo’s Workshop Imagine how inspiring Leonardo DaVinci’s (LDV) workshop must have been. Teams will portray his workplace in an original, creative performance that includes LDV, a patron, and a naysayer. The team will recreate a Da- Vinci painting, make a three-dimensional representation of one of his works, and recreate another LDV work in any form the team wishes. There will also be an original “debunked” creation that LDV “invented” but discarded because it was mocked. Ironically, the item will be shown as something commonly used in modern times. Divisions I, II, III & IV Problem 4: Structure Toss Step right up and put your structure to the test! Teams must strategize risk for points and “toss” their structures in this year’s problem-turned-carnival. They will use a device to propel the structure in a carnival game. If it travels in the air it gets higher score! Once the structure has been successfully tossed, it can be tested for strength. A car- nival barker character will entice other characters to join the fun during a performance that incorporates testing the structure’s strength with creative games of skill and chance. Divisions I, II, III & IV Problem 5: Opposites Distract Disagreements can distract groups from seeing the bigger picture. Teams will create and present a humorous performance about a sneaky character that distracts others while trying to take control of anything the team wishes. In the performance it will lure others into silly arguments and be successful two times. The arguments will be presented using diff erent dramatic styles and will include attention-getting eff ects. In the end, the groups will learn that they have been intentionally distracted and will catch the sneaky character before it takes control. Divisions I, II, III & IV Primary: Museum Makers Kids can see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Now they will use that ability to create their own museum! The team will create and present an original museum and its exhibits. During the performance, the team will reveal three creative displays that explain the theme of the museum and show off team-made items. A tour guide will take audiences on a journey through the museum to meet a humorous artist and a curator. Through solving open-ended problems, students develop creative-thinking skills that can be applied to real-life situations. Teams from throughout the U.S. and more than 20 other countries participate in the program. How does it work? chools or community groups purchase a membership and form teams of up to Sseven students. Each team chooses one of five competitive problems to solve. The problems appeal to a wide range of interests; some are technical in nature, while others are artistic or performance-oriented. Under the guidance of an adult coach, teams work on their solutions throughout the school year and, if they choose, present them in organized competitions in the spring. The “friendly” com- petitive aspect encourages students to be the best that they can be. What are the competition levels? n the U.S., the first level of competition is usually within a region of a state.

    July 11, 2018 Dear Lilburn Business Association Members, We are Trickum Middle School’s Odyssey of the Mind Team and are writing to thank you for your $100 donation to help us attend Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in late May. Your donation was critical in helping us get the seven team members to competition in Iowa! Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition for youth. For five years in a row, our team has been able to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind State Finals, but this was the first time we were able to compete on a national and international level. We were so excited for the opportunity! There were over 825 teams from around the world that competed in the 39th annual Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. We met students from 16 other countries, including Japan, Poland, Germany, Mexico, Singapore, Qatar, China, South Korea, Canada, India, and Hong Kong. The opening ceremonies were held in Iowa’s Hilton Coliseum and were run similar to the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. A member of our team (Blake) was able to carry the Georgia state flag in the opening ceremonies. On another evening during a float and banner parade, a member of our team (Sarah) was able to walk into the Hilton Coliseum with Georgia’s two-story dragon float. (An amazing site!) In between competition events, we traded pins with other Odyssey of the Mind students from other states and countries. We competed in two categories—a long-term competition where we presented an 8 minute show that was a “mock” documentary of Alice in Wonderland, and a spontaneous competition that is similar to improvisational humor.

What is Odyssey of the Mind? u Overview of Odyssey of the Mind Program The Odyssey of the Mind School Program is administered in New York State by the New York State Odyssey of the Mind Association, Inc. (NYSOMA), a not-for-profit corporation. Through its affiliation with Creative Competitions, Inc. it fosters creative thinking and problem- solving skills among participating students from kindergarten through college. Participants solve problems in a variety of areas, from building mechanical devices such as spring-driven vehicles to giving their own interpretation of literary classics. Through solving problems, students learn lifelong skills such as working with others as a team, evaluating ideas, making decisions, and creating solutions while also developing self-confidence from their experiences. Students from different cultures and widely varying economic backgrounds will prove that creativity is universal. They will all demonstrate their unique creative solution to an Odyssey of the Mind problem while appreciating the creativity of others. The teams have worked throughout the school year solving an OotM problem and were judged as the most creative in a series of rigorous state and national competitions. At ISU, the teams will represent their state and country in hopes to prove that they are the world’s most creative problem-solvers. Odyssey of the Mind has teams throughout the United States and in more than 15 other countries including China, South Korea, Poland, Germany, Singapore, and Mexico. They will come with interesting costumes, original stage sets, and innovative inventions — all part of solving an Odyssey problem. All were fourth-graders at Rhodes Elementary School in Chino this school year. Chino Valley Odyssey of the Mind team wins first place in World Finals of the creative challenge competition A student team from Rhodes Elementary School in Chino took first place in its division at the 2017 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals held in late May at Michigan State University. The team of fourth-graders competed against 43 third- through fifth-grade teams in the creative challenge to build a structure of balsa wood that could hold a significant weight. The competing teams came from all over the United States, as well as Japan, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Russia, Germany, Poland, England, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, Korea, Slovakia, and India. In addition to competing, the team met other students from around the world and traded team pins. Members of the Chino Valley Odyssey of the Mind team are Sophie Miller, Audrey Tjandra, Austin Liu, Colin Kawakami, Kiran Wong, Nicholas Meksavanh, and Cheryl Chung. Their coach is parent Jackie Meksavanh. Co-coaches include Evelyn Sunarko and Syanna Kawakami. The team’s first place win in the California Odyssey of the Mind State Finals in late March earned it a spot in the World Finals. .

  • NASA’S Terra (Left) and Aqua (Right) Illustrates How the Amount of Sunlight That Aerosols Absorb Affects Cloud Formation

Editor’s Corner Michael King EOS Senior Project Scientist I am pleased to report that, after executing a series of extremely precise maneuvers, both the CloudSat and Cloud Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) satellites are in position in the Afternoon “A-Train” Constellation and formation flying has begun. CloudSat and CALIPSO now join Aqua, Aura, and PARA- SOL in the A-Train, and these missions will work together to provide new insights into the global distribution and evolution of clouds and aerosols to improve weather forecasting and climate prediction. CloudSat flies about a minute behind Aqua in the formation, and precedes CALIPSO by a mere 12.5 (+/- 2.5) seconds. Even before the two satellites were in place in the A-Train, the first images from each mission were flowing back to Earth, revealing never-before-seen three-dimensional details about clouds and aerosols. Mission managers tested the flight- and ground-system performance of CloudSat’s Cloud-Profiling Radar (CPR) in late May, and found it to be working perfectly. Thirty seconds after the radar was activated for the first time, the CPR obtained its first image of a warm front storm in the Norwegian Sea, and a few weeks later CloudSat observed Tropical Storm Alberto as it churned in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, the CALIPSO team has been testing out the three instruments onboard the spacecraft—the Infra- red Imaging Radiometer (IIR), Wide Field-of-view Camera (WFC), and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP)—and all three are now active.
