As a Train Simulator Partner Programme member, we collaborate with Dovetail Games to produce a variety of realistic content for Train Simulator. In addition to the CSX Hanover Subdivision route, our products include ~ 30 realistic Train Simulator scenario and product packs, each of which is available at the Steam Store and Dovetail Games Store.

THE CHESSIE SYSTEM

The Chessie System was created in February 1973 to integrate the operations of three notable eastern railroads that had long been closely aligned: the Chesapeake & , the & Ohio, and the Western Railway.

The Chesapeake & Ohio: Among the great railroads of America, few were more successful and influential than the Chesapeake & Ohio. With a route system that reached from Tidewater through the coal-rich Alleghenies and Appalachians to key Midwestern industrial hubs including , Toledo, and , the C&O was a great coal hauler, a forwarder of manifest freight, and a classy passenger road operating name such as The George Washington. C&O’s acquisition of the Pere Marquette in 1947 further strengthened the already mighty C&O, expanding its route miles to nearly 5,000 and reaching Detroit and Buffalo. The C&O held an interest in the Baltimore & Ohio and C&O and B&O operations became increasing integrated as early as the 1960s. And it was the C&O, which in 1933 introduced a sleeping kitten — named “Chessie” — as a symbol of its comfortable passenger accommodations. Chessie the kitten would become an icon of American railroading for decades to come.

The Baltimore & Ohio: Chartered on February 28, 1827, the historic B&O was America’s first great railroad. As its name well implied, the B&O was created to build a railroad from the city of Baltimore to the Ohio River. And so it did, building the first railroad across the Alleghenies (which is today’s legendary CSX Mountain Subdivision). The B&O would go on to reach across the Midwest to Chicago and St. Louis, serve Pittsburgh, Washington, D. C., , and . Like eventual partner C&O, the Baltimore & Ohio enjoyed a diverse base of tonnage to haul and carded classic passenger trains such as the National Limited and Capitol Limited. By 1962, C&O held a controlling interest in the B&O in what was a prelude to the creation of the Chessie System.

The : Although never of the stature of the C&O or B&O, the held a much admired place in the memory of railroaders and railroad enthusiasts. In stretching from Baltimore, Maryland westward to Connellsville, , and ‘s coal country, the Western Maryland was big and busy enough to be pulsing with action, yet small enough to be comfortably familiar. For the train-watcher, Western Maryland was at once a tough, traditional Allegheny coal hauler and a spiffy bridge route that hustled freight on its “Alpha Jets.” As early as the 1920s, B&O held a large percent stake in the WM, and B&O influence continued across the decades, finally reaching culmination in the creation of the Chessie System in 1973.

With the formation of the Chessie System, operations and routes of the three railroads were integrated and much of the Western Maryland, with a route map largely duplicating that of the B&O, was deemed redundant. By 1983 the Western Maryland was formally merged into the B&O. Happily, among the survivors from Western Maryland’s route system was the WM route east from Hagerstown which lived on and today is CSX’s Hanover Subdivision. The Chessie System, as it turned out, was one evolutionary step toward creation of today’s 21,000-mile CSX Transportation, which was formed by the combination of the Chessie System and Seaboard System in 1986

3 THE CSX HANOVER SUBDIVISION ROUTE

High Iron Simulations’ CSX’s Hanover Subdivision route for Train Simulator extends 62 route miles from Hagerstown, Maryland to Hanover Pennsylvania and the nearby junction at Porters. In Western Maryland-era terms, the route thus represents the Hagerstown-Highfield portion of WM’s Eastern Subdivision and the majority of the Western Maryland Hanover Subdivision. Short segments of the Eastern Subdivision and York Subdivision also are included at Porters. For full details of the CSX’s Hanover Subdivision route, please refer to the route manual.

THE CHESSIE SYSTEM “RETRO” PACK

The Chessie System “Retro Pack” is created to provide enthusiasts an opportunity to experience much of the charac- ter and operations of the Hanover route during the Chessie System era and, in particular, the time period of the late 1970s. Accordingly, the pack includes three types of Chessie System , nine types of era-specific freight rolling stock in Chessie System and other appropriate liveries, and a selection of nine career scenarios which are closely based upon Chessie System operations and train symbols.

One of the era-specific aspects of the pack is the use of train orders to govern operations, as was typical on American railroads. These train orders appear as selective “pop-ups” at appropriate times.

Given that the CSX Hanover Subdivision route is modeled in its present-day form, some “artist’s license” (or as model railroaders might say, “modeler’s license”) is necessary as naturally changes have occurred to the railroading environ- ment (most notably around Hagerstown) in the last half-century. That said, much of the route remains as it was in the Chessie System era and we believe will offer an experience representative of the fascinating Chessie System

Three notable types of Chessie System Electro-Motive diesels are included in the Chessie System Retro Pack.

ELECTRO-MOTIVE GP9

Along with the Electro-Motive F7, the classic EMD “Geep” helped dieselize America’s railroads. Following in the foot- steps of the landmarkGP7, the 1,750-horsepower EMD GP9 was produced from 1954 through 1959 with a produc- tion run of more than 4,000 locomotives. The C&O, B&O, and Western Maryland all were operators of the versatile GP9. The GP9s featured in the Chessie Retro Pack are representative of a group of 25 ex-Chesapeake & Ohio GP9s which were transferred to the Western Maryland during the late 1970s. The GP9 is included both in full Chessie livery and in a “patched” blue C&O scheme with Western Maryland lettering

ELECTRO-MOTIVE GP35

During the “horsepower race” among diesel builders in the early and mid-1960s, Electro-Motive introduced the 2,500- horsepower GP35, which proved successful with a production run of more than 1,300 units constructed from 1963 through 1966. The Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, and Western Maryland were all buyers of the GP35, which is provided in Chessie livery with appropriate B&O, C&O, and WM sub-lettering.

ELECTRO-MOTIVE “SW” SERIES DIESEL SWITCHERS

Electro-Motive’s introduced its “SW” series diesel switcher line in 1936 with the 600-horsepower “SW” type. Through a long and successful evolutionary line, the SW models would increase in size and horsepower and culminate with the 1,500-horsepower SW1500 introduced in 1966. The Chessie Retro Pack includes three EMD sister models — the 1,200-horsepower SW7, SW9, and SW1200. The SW7 was produced from 1949 through 1951, when it was supplanted by the SW9 and which was built through 1953. In 1954, EMD debuted the SW1200, which remained in production through 1966. Together, more than 2,300 examples of the locomotives were built and both the Baltimore & Ohio and Chesapeake & Ohio were buyers. The SW switchers in this pack wear the Chessie System’s beautiful yellow, vermil- lion, and blue livery that was introduced in 1973. The switchers are sub-lettered as appropriate for the C&O and B&O. 5 OPERATING THE LOCOMOTIVES The locomotives in this add-on use the standard keyboard controls of Train Simulator. Please refer to the User Manual of Train Simulator or the Academy scenarios for general information about how to drive a in this game. In- formation on specific locomotive control and operating features follows.

Use of Selector Lever:

The Selector Lever allows the driver to switch between Throttle and Dynamic Brake controls using the same lever (Throttle). To use it you must move the Throttle Lever to Idle, then move the Selector lever twice to the direc- tion. You will see that the selector display changes from PWR, to Off and then to DYN. Now moving the Throttle Lever you will apply Dynamic Brakes. To apply power again move the Throttle Lever to Idle, then move the Selector Lever twice to the short hood direction until the display shows PWR. Then you can apply throttle again.

Detail Customization:

In addition to operating features, you can customize a variety of details of the EMD switchers by using and cycling through the key commands listed below. Detail changes can include exhaust stacks, handrails, pilot plate, underframe piping, mirrors, and sunshades.

10 ROLLING STOCK

Included in the Chessie System “Retro Pack” is a selection of nine types of period-appropriate freight equipment, in- cluding a number of freight cars in multiple liveries (including those of Chessie System, Western Maryland, Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, and unbranded schemes).

Western Maryland’s notable C-13A class caboose, which was constructed at the railroad’s Hagerstown shops and numbered more than 100 examples, is included in Chessie, WM, and special “safety” liveries.

Freight equipment provided in the pack includes:

• Western Maryland C-13A caboose (Chessie, Western Maryland, and four “safety scheme” liveries) • 40-foot steel boxcar (Chessie, B&O, C&O, Western Maryland, and unbranded liveries) • 50-foot single-door boxcar (B&O, two versions and Western Maryland) • 50-foot double-door boxcar (Chessie, B&O) • Airslide 50-foot covered hopper (Chessie) • AC&F-style 2-bay covered hopper (Chessie) • 55-ton steel open-top hopper with coal and stone loads and empty (Chessie) • 70-ton steel open-top hopper with coal and/or stone load s and empty (Chessie, Western Maryland)

• 100-ton open-top hopper with coal loads and empty (Chessie)

11 CAREER SCENARIOS

Nine career scenarios are included in the Chessie System “Retro Pack” which re-create freight operations, use of authentic train symbols, and employment of train orders as appropriate. The pack also enables the CSX Hanover Subdivision route for Western Maryland-era QD operations.

[CSR 1.01] Chessie Comes to Hagerstown

The Chessie System was created in 1973 to integrate Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland operations. In Western Maryland’s hometown of Hagerstown, Maryland, the influence of the Chessie System is on full display and, on a wintry day, you will be working a morning switch job aboard a Baltimore & Ohio EMD SW1200 in flashy Chessie livery.

Duration: ~ 60 minutes.

Featured locomotive: Chessie (B&O) EMD SW1200.

[CSR 1.02] Chessie Symbol WM-6

Symbol freight WM-6 was a long-time regular on the Western Maryland which continued well into the Chessie era. You are the engineer of eastbound WM-6 which is powered by a trio of EMD GP9s, and as the scenario begins you are preparing to switch at Security, Maryland before beginning the climb of the west slope of South Mountain.

Duration: ~ 75 minutes.

[CSR 1.03] Working Westward

You are the engineer of symbol freight YH-1, working from York, Pennsylvania to Hagerstown, Maryland with a pair of Chessie System EMD GP35s as power. As the scenario begins, you are at Porters, Pennsylvania awaiting a meet with Train WM-6, then you will be headed westward with considerable work en route.

Duration: ~ 60 minutes.

[CSR 1.04] Gathering the Granules

Chessie’s ex-Western Maryland Hanover Subdivision was rich in shippers that generated heavy tonnage, and one such shipper was the sprawling quarry located near Greenstone, Pennsylvania that produced granules for roof shin- gles. You are the engineer of Train WM-6 with a trio of veteran EMD GP9s as power and as the scenario begins you are ready to work at Greenstone, then you will make the descent of South Mountain’s steep east slope.

Duration: ~ 55 minutes.

[CSR 1.05] Hanover Visitor

As early as the 1960s, motive power of the Baltimore & Ohio and Chesapeake & Ohio frequently appeared on the sis- ter railroads and with the formation of Chessie System such became even more typical and included the Western Mar- yland. You’ve been called for Hanover yard duty and your power for the day is a Chesapeake & Ohio EMD SW7 in Chessie livery.

[CSR 1.06] Something Borrowed, Something Blue

In the late 1970s, the Chesapeake & Ohio transferred a group of 25 veteran Electro-Motive GP9s to the Western Mary- land. Many of the venerable Geeps would gain Chessie liveries but a number also initially operated in a “patched” blue livery. You are the engineer of symbol freight BH-1 with a trio of ex-C&O Geeps as power and as the scenario begins you are awaiting a meet at Highfield, then you will make the descent of South Mountain on a rainy autumn afternoon.

Duration: ~ 60 minutes.

[CSR 1.07] Chessie Symbol BH-1, Part 1

During the Western Maryland and early Chessie years, symbol freight BH-1, operating between Baltimore and Hager- stown, was a regular call. You are the engineer of the BH-1 on a winter afternoon and as the scenario begins you are awaiting a meet with eastbound WM-6 at Camp Passing Track at Gettysburg. You then have switching work ahead at Gettysburg. This is the first installment of a two-part scenario.

Duration: ~ 70 minutes.

[CSR 1.08] Chessie Symbol BH-1, Part 2

During the Western Maryland and early Chessie years, symbol freight BH-1, operating between Baltimore and Hager- stown, was a regular call. You are the engineer of the BH-1 on a winter afternoon and in part 1 of this two-part scenario you worked west to Orrtanna. Now you are ready to switch the food plant at Orrtanna, then make the rugged climb of the east slope of Jacks and South Mountains. Your power is a duo of Chessie EMD GP35s.

Duration: ~ 50 minutes.

[CSR 1.09] Bittinger Afternoon Call

You are the engineer of the Chessie System Hanover-based afternoon switch job and have made your way to the massive Bittinger quarry west of Hanover where you will be setting out empties and pulling together loads. As the sce- nario begins, you are awaiting operating clearance from the quarry superintendent. Your power is a Baltimore & Ohio EMD SW9.

Duration: ~ 45 minutes.

Featured locomotive: Chessie (B&O) EMD SW9.
