  • Kandie Time in Prague, Melese Wins Women's Race from Moreira
PRESS RELEASE 3 May 2015 Kandie time in Prague, Melese wins women’s race from Moreira Felix Kandie might well not have made it to the start line of the Volkswagen Prague Marathon on Sunday morning, feeling the effects of a sore throat. But he decided to give it a go and his resolution paid off handsomely. “I wanted to see how far I could get,” said Kandie. In the end, he went to the limit in the Czech capital. Coming from behind he took his second marathon win in a succession with another personal best. The 27 year-old improved to 2:08:32 in the Volkswagen Prague Marathon. Last November Kandie showed his strength to set a 2:10:37 course record in the Athens Marathon. Fellow-Kenyan Evans Chebet was runner-up for the second consecutive year with 2:08:50, followed by Ethiopia’s Deribe Robi, who finished in 2:09:05. Yebrgual Melese of Ethiopia clocked a fine 2:23:49 to take the women’s race in Prague. It is the third fastest winning time in the history of the race that was first started in 1995. Portugal’s Sara Moreira took second in her second marathon race with a personal best of 2:24:49, improving on her debut in New York last November by over a minute. Letebrhan Haylay of Ethiopia was third with 2:25:24. 10,000 runners entered the Volkswagen Prague Marathon, which is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race It might have helped Felix Kandie that the pace in the men’s race was much slower than planned despite very good weather conditions.

  • Geoffrey Ronoh Seeks to Conquer the Marathon Distance in Prague
PRESS RELEASE 30 April 2015 Geoffrey Ronoh seeks to conquer the marathon distance in Prague Kenya’s conveyor belt of world-class runners produced yet another new name in 2015 as Geoffrey Ronoh became last year’s rising star. Signed as a pacemaker in the Mattoni Olomouc Half Marathon, he famously snatched victory, leaving behind superstars Wilson Kipsang and Dennis Kimetto. If Ronoh can transform the kind of form he showed last summer onto the marathon distance then he could produce some performance in Sunday’s Volkswagen Prague Marathon. While possessing to date a modest personal best of 2:15:51, Ronoh is justifiably considered one of the favourites. However, the fastest runner in the field has a PB that is almost ten minutes faster than Ronoh’s: Ethiopia’s Deribe Robi ran 2:06:06 in Dubai earlier this year and leads a field of nine sub 2:10 runners in Prague. As for the women’s race, Ethiopians are expected to lead the chase for the title. Five of them show personal bests of sub 2:25 and Koren Jelela is the fastest of this quintet with 2:22:43. The Volkswagen Prague Marathon had its inaugural edition exactly 20 years ago. The race has developed into one of the world’s best quality marathon events and is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. While 985 marathon runners competed back in 1995 this year organisers have once again a capacity field of 10,000 entries. Bib numbers sold out already half a year ago. “The Volkswagen Prague Marathon is an unbelievable success story.

  • Annual Report 2020
Annual Report and Accounts 2020 President’s Contents Report It is hard to conclude that the period of this annual report April 2019-March 2020 is anything other than an outstanding success for scottishathletics. This is my second spell as President of Scottish Athletics, and I have observed how far the sport has come in the time. I can remember that it is only 27 years since the five governing bodies struggled but managed to amalgamate and provide a consistent approach to delivering the sport. Progress was slow at first and it took another eight to ten years to start formally planning and professionalise the sport by hiring a Chief Executive Officer and creating a Company Limited by Guarantee. The rest may be history with the major improvements coming in the last decade. Measuring the success of a sport is not simple. There are about 150 affiliated athletic clubs in Scotland that vary in size from small informal clubs with a few members to long-established clubs whose membership exceeds 700. The total individual membership of scottishathletics is around a record 14,000 with a further 10,000+ active weekly participants in jogscotland. Pleasing all of the members is often not an easy task. In my view there are only two measures that can be used to judge the success of a sport: the participation level and the quality at the elite level. If you get these right, then all the other aspects of delivery is usually in place. However, the measures are both difficult to assess as the first one can be dependent on the fluctuation of the population demographics in Scotland and the second one by the popularity of athletics President’s Report 2 throughout the world.
