Jordan: Background and U.S. Relations Updated October 17, 2018 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov RL33546 Jordan: Background and U.S. Relations Summary This report provides an overview of Jordanian politics and current issues in U.S.-Jordanian relations. It provides a brief discussion of Jordan’s government and economy and of its cooperation with U.S. policies in the Middle East. Several issues are likely to figure in decisions by Congress and the Administration on future aid to and cooperation with Jordan. These include Jordan’s continued involvement in attempting to promote Israeli-Palestinian peace and the stability of the Jordanian regime, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts in neighboring Syria and Iraq. U.S. officials may also consider potential threats to Jordan from the Islamic State organization (IS, also known as ISIL, ISIS, or the Arabic acronym Da’esh). Although the United States and Jordan have never been linked by a formal treaty, they have cooperated on a number of regional and international issues over the years. Jordan’s small size and lack of major economic resources have made it dependent on aid from Western and various Arab sources. U.S. support, in particular, has helped Jordan address serious vulnerabilities, both internal and external. Jordan’s geographic position, wedged between Israel, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, has made it vulnerable to the strategic designs of more powerful neighbors, but has also given Jordan an important role as a buffer between these countries in their largely adversarial relations with one another. Public dissatisfaction with the economy is probably the most pressing concern for the Jordanian monarchy. -

INSS Insight No. 1393, October 20, 2020 Jordan: A New Political System Faces Longstanding Problems Oded Eran In advance of the parliamentary elections in Jordan scheduled for November 10, 2020 King Abdullah has appointed Dr. Bisher al-Khasawneh, a close advisor, as Prime Minister. The new government was sworn in on October 12. In addition to the changes in the government and those likely to occur following the elections, the King has also changed the composition of the Senate, the other Jordanian legislative body. This will complete the shake-up in the Jordanian political system. The new system, however, will have to continue to confront longstanding problems, mainly economic, that were aggravated by the decade of effects from the "Arab Spring," as well as the Covid-19 pandemic. For Israel, it is possible that the agreement for the passage of Israeli airplanes through Jordanian airspace could signal Jordanian willingness to take part in projects made possible by the agreements between Israel and the Gulf states. The Israeli government and the new government in Amman should discuss economic plans that can include Jordan and enable it to take advantage of its geo-strategic location between the Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea. The elections to the Jordanian parliament will take place on November 10, 2020, unless King Abdullah II decides to postpone them because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The outgoing government submitted its resignation, as required by Jordanian law. Instead of reappointing Omar Razzaz as Prime Minister, the King gave the task of forming a new government to Dr. Bisher al-Khasawneh, who has served in a number of senior posts in the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has been the king's closest political advisor in recent years. -
