ISRAEl Details and Highlights2020 Day 1: Sunday, Oct. 11 — Depart USA panoramic view of the Old City of Jerusalem with the Temple Mount. As a group, we will travel from Appleton Alliance Church to O’Hare Walking down the Mount of Olives, we shall reach the Church of International Airport. We will leave the USA on our non-stop flight Dominus Flevit (Luke 19:41-44) for a visit. Proceed to the Garden of from Chicago to Tel Aviv. Gethsemane, the plae where Jesus was arrested (Matthew 26:36-58) Day 2: Monday, Oct. 12 — Arrive in Tel Aviv to see the old olive tress and visit the Basilica of the Agony. Driving We will be met by an HLST representative. Our tour begins in an- through the Kidron Valley, we shall reach the Lion’s Gate and enter cient Joppa (Jaffa). Conclude our day at the Western Wall—the holiest place for the Jews. Dinner and Day 3: Tuesday, Oct. 13 — Caesarea/Mount Carmel overnight at our hotel in Jerusalem. (B, D) After breakfast, we drive north to Caesarea Maritima. Visit the Roman Theater, the Herod’s Palace, the Palace of the Roman Day 7: Saturday, Oct. 17 — Bethlehem*/Jerusalem Procurator (Acts 23:23 and Acts 26:23-Paul; Ats 10:20-48; Peter and After breakfast, proceed to Bethlehem* to visit the Church of the Cornelius), the Amphitheater, the Crusaders’ City and Harbor. Proceed Nativity (Luke 2:1-7) followed by a visit to the Shepherds’ Fields and to Mount Carmel to visit the Monastery of the Muhraka, where Elijah shopping at a Christian-owned store. (D) Day 8: Sunday, Oct. 18 — Ein Gedi, Masada, Dead Sea Day 4: Wednesday, Oct. 14 — Galilee/Yardenit After breakfast, we will drive from the Good Samaritan Inn After breakfast, boat ride on the Sea of Galilee where Jesus walked (Luke 8:25-37) to the Ein Gedi Overlook where David hid from King on water (Matthew 14:22-26). The ride will end at Kibbutz Nof Saul. Next, we will proceed to the fortress of Masada, stronghold Ginnosar to visit the Anceint Boat, from the time of Jesus, that of the Jews in the war against the Romans. Ascend to the fortress was found nearby. Drive to the Mount of Beatitudes (Matthew by cable car to visit the palaces of Herod the Great with its Roman 5:3-11) where we shall visit the heptagonal church that was built baths and pools. We will have lunch at Herod’s Dead Sea Hotel and by the Italian architect Berluzzi. Proceed to Peter’s Primacy, where use their facilities for a possible “dip” and “float” in the salty water Jesus reinstated Peter after Peter denied him three times.     Our recent midweek meditations have focused on the disciples of Jesus Christ after his resurrection. We have reflected on what perhaps their thought would have been as they remember their friend Jesus. This gave us a reason, to look at some of the places where Jesus ministry took place. And so we had an opportunity to share pictures from a trip to Israel that a group from our community took several years ago. So far, in the context of these meditations you have seen about half of the places that we visited. So, I am going to use the next several Mid-week meditations to tell you the rest of the story. And so we get started along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. In the south section of Tel Aviv is a place called Jaffa. In Biblical times it was called Joppa. Picture is the Joppa Harbor. Joppa is the oldest harbor in the world. In 1000 B.C. Solomon had the materials for his grand temple delivered to this harbor and then they were transferred over land to Jerusalem. Joppa also was a place that Jonah fled to as he avoided the call that was before him, which was to preach to the people of Nineveh. Also in Jaffa is a place called Peter’s Church which commemorates the fact that Peter came from Lydia to Joppa and when he arrived he raised Tabitha from the dead. The next stop on our tour is Caesarea by the sea. It is about 40 miles north of Jaffa along the coast of the Mediterranean.

Yardenit provides pilgrims and tourists with modern comforts in the biblical setting of the Holy Land, offering a serene and spiritual setting for those wishing to baptize in the River Jordan. “In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove, and a voice came from heaven; ‘Thou art my beloved Son, with thee I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:9-11). Visitors to Yardenit are greeted by this very verse from Mark’s account of the baptism of Jesus in over 80 languages and depicted in hand painted tiles.

And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness, and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. 27 THE WAY ONE DAY, AS JOHN WAS BAPTIZING in the Jordan, he looked up to see a familiar face. He smiled as Jesus approached, and the two men embraced. These men had known one another their entire lives. They had played together as boys and dreamed together as young men. John was six months older, but he al- ways knew it was his younger cousin who would play the greater role in God’s plans. The two had shared long walks and conver- sations both in Jerusalem and in the monastery by the Salt Sea. They had stayed up long into the night discussing the Scriptures and the kingdom of God. John’s preaching and baptism at the Jordan would offi cially set in motion a chain of events that would lead to John’s own death in a matter of months, and to Jesus’ crucifi xion just three years later. Jesus took off his sandals and robe and said to John, “Bap- tize me, brother!” John stepped back, confused, protesting: “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus in- sisted, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfi ll all righteousness” (Matthew 3:14, 15 NRSV).

Schimpf “If I have found favor in your sigh, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favor in your sight. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan…” One of the wonderful things we do on our pilgrim tours of Israel is that I have a baptism service at a place called Yardenit, very near where the Jordan River flows south out of the Sea of Galilee, on its way to the Dead Sea. We call ahead and order white robes to wear and there are changing rooms to put on bathing suits and robes before gathering at one of four small amphitheaters which lend themselves to singing and preaching and safely going down into the water. Most of us have been baptized before; so this is really a commemoration of our baptism as we recall the baptism of Jesus. The location is nowhere near the place scripture tells us John was preaching and people were coming into the wilderness. The baptism of Jesus is one of the great mysteries of Christian faith. If there was ever a person who didn’t need to be baptized it was Jesus. Nevertheless he appears one day at a meeting being conducted by his cousin John who admits by his own account that he is not worthy to untie even the laces of the sandals Jesus is wearing.

We arrive in our hotel in the late afternoon and check in to the Nof Ginosar Hotel for dinner and overnight . May 14 Sea of Galilee Sat. The Sea of Galilee is rich in memories of the three years of Jesus’ Ministry around its shores.
