They backed up their talk with taxpayer mon- ey by building a parking garage and pedestrian bridge next to the Wonderland Blue Line station. The impact of those combined initiatives on Revere Beach and its future cannot be underestimated. Getting people out of cars and on trains is an in- creasing valuable ingredient in any sensible plan for the region’s economic future. Suffolk Downs and Wonderland racetracks have seen better days. But better days are ahead for both locations be- cause of their size and proximity to mass transit. The recreational diversions that once defined the tracks and Revere Beach are being replaced by commercial and residential opportunities com- bined with recreation. It’s not a stretch to imagine people shopping or attending sporting events on a revived Wonderland and visiting the beach be- fore walking home to their oceanside apartment or boarding a train to return to Boston or, if a Blue Line extension becomes a reality, to Lynn and points north. The best news for Revere Beach is that it has en- joyed significant investment and enhanced state stewardship that includes restoring its historic ar- chitecture and replenishing sand stolen by storms. The taxpayer investment in the beach and im- provements enhancing it are a legacy to a 120- year commitment to making Revere Beach a place for the public. Charles Eliot, a little known landscape designer who was chosen by the MDC to design the beach for the public, had it right when he said Revere Beach will always attract people as long as its nat- ural beauty is preserved and kept pristine.

Matching outfits were my thing. “The prom dresses are in.” That call would come from Morton’s in Boston, one of my mother’s favor- ite shops for me.
