Ma THE League XI fall to agonising two- defeat against MCC … Oakmere in box seat for DAZZLER 163 League title after Appleton-Chester crunch is abandoned … Stockport Georgians clinch division three title … Chester into two T20 finals Cheshire seniors promoted to T20 Division Two … Cheshire U17 go second in the table … National Playing Survey now open … Come and watch on Wednesday week, and Finals Day in two weeks

Two weeks ago, there were heady days for women’s as won the World Cup in thrilling fashion. The past fortnight has also seen some exciting times on the Cheshire women’s cricket scene – read on for details of Cheshire’s T20 promotion, a superb match between the League XI and the MCC and the outcome of some big matches in the first division of the CWCL.

SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET

MCC 157-7 (40; Jennie Kitzinger 43, Beth Nicholson 35, Laura Jackson 2-17) CWCL XI 155 (40; Dawn Prestidge 81*, Kate Coppack 20, Jude Wilmot 5-25, Abi Bates 2-17)

In an agonising finish, the League XI fell just short of the total posted by the MCC earlier in the day. Dawn Prestidge played a magnificent ’s innings, but was stranded at the non-striker’s end as the last two fell during a superbly composed final from MCC veteran Jude Wilmot, who duly completed her five- haul.

There have been more than a few impressive displays by the League’s representative team in the eight years in which we have welcomed the MCC to Cheshire. However, while two of these matches have been drawn, the League has never previously come within 20 runs of the victory target.

Here the draw was not an option, with the format switched to win/lose cricket, and the match shortened to 40 overs per side to allow the ground to dry out.

In a superb effort, the League XI’s bowlers kept the scoring rate blow three per over for the first 27 overs. The scoring rate only accelerated when Jennie Kitzinger (43 from 42 balls) and Bev Nicholson (35 from 29 deliveries) got together. Laura Jackson (2-17 from eight overs) and Kate Coppack (1-6 from five) were the pick of the attack, and there were also wickets for Katie Haszeldine, Sami Fowler and Hannah Snape. The bowlers were backed up by some tremendous fielding, with the catches taken by Snape and Haszeldine genuine contenders for the game’s champagne moment.

Batting at number four, Kate Coppack’s run-a-ball 20 gave the League’s reply vital impetus, but the best came during a sixth wicket stand of 50 between Prestidge and Raffaella Rodighiero, with the pair hitting some fine boundaries, even with many deliveries barely bouncing above ankle height.

Presti dge eventually finished unbeaten on 81 from 79 deliveries, with 13 fours, but in addition to Wilmot’s haul, Abi Bates claimed two wickets and Nicholson and Kitzinger one each as the MCC ultimately prevailed.

So, the match ended with the MCC once again victorious, but the League’s matchday squad of 12 – most of them aged 20 or under after three players withdrew due to injury in the days leading up to the match – were once again a tremendous credit to the League.

The League extends its thanks to Ashton-on-Mersey CC - who staged the match for the second year running, and also provided a scorer in John Rishton – and to umpires John Bone and Graham Pugh and scorer Caroline Sheridan.

League XI: Dawn Prestidge (Oakmere, captain), Alexa Harrison, Megan Cureton (both Oxton), Hannah Bratt, Katie Haszeldine, Christine Lawson (all Wistaston Village), Kate Coppack, Hannah Snape (both Chester Boughton Hall), Sami Fowler, Laura Jackson (both Appleton), Raffaella Rodighiero (Oakmere) Fielding reserve: Molli Coleman (Chester Boughton Hall) Scorers: John Rishton (Ashton-on-Mersey), Caroline Sheridan (Didsbury).

Scorecard

CHESHIRE WOMEN’S LEAGUE Division One / Two Cross Divisional – July 23:

Wistaston Village 110 (37.5; Katie Haszeldine 33, Alison Smith 20, Laura Jackson 2-16) (6pts) Appleton 111-6 (32.2; Emma McCue (Barlow) 67*, Chloe Page 20, Haszeldine 4-14, Smith 2-29) (25pts)

• Wistaston are still the only division two side to beat top flight opposition in a cross-divisional match this year, and they certainly came closer than any of their divisional rivals to claiming a scalp here. Appleton were certainly very grateful to Emma McCue for batting through the innings for 67, and Katie Haszeldine was one player who certainly didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

CHESHIRE WOMEN’S LEAGUE Division One / Two Cross Divisional – July 30:

Ashton-on-Mersey 52 (31.4; Mina Khatun 18, Emma Barlow 3-8, Olivia Horsfield 2-8, Laura Jackson 2-14) (9pts) Appleton dnb (13pts)

• This was the league’s first no result match of the year, with rain depriving Appleton of the chance to complete the win, after they had ripped through the Ashton line-up.

August 6: Didsbury (25pts) w/o Ashton-on-Mersey (minus 10pts)

Division One – August 6: Appleton 149-2 (Laura Jackson 70*, Emma Barlow 49) (12pts) Chester Boughton Hall dnb (9pts)

• For the second successive week, Appleton’s match was abandoned at halfway. After Kate Coppack had bowled her eight overs for only 12 runs, Appleton were struggling on just 32 from the first 20 overs, but Emma Barlow and Laura Jackson duly completed their partnership of 123 and led their side to a total that could have been competitive. Alas we will never know what the outcome would have been of what should have been a crucial match

Stockport Trinity 125-9 (40; Jennie Kitzinger 51, Carys White 29, Natalie Lyons 3-17) (5pts) Oakmere 126-2 (25.5; Dawn Prestidge 54, Phoebe Cottam 31*) (24pts)

• The rain did not start in Stockport until 5.30, and Oakmere were able to complete their victory and greatly improve their title chances. Natalie Lyons produced an excellent spell to limit Trinity to little more than three per over, before Dawn Prestidge and Phoebe Cottam led a comfortable run chase. The abandonment at Appleton means that Appleton cannot overtake Oakmere by winning their matches in hand, although Oakmere and Appleton are still to meet on the final day of the season. It also means that Chester cannot overtake Oakmere by winning their match in hand, as the sides would be level on points and Oakmere would keep top spot based on having a higher number of wins.

Division Two – August 6:

Oxton v Leigh – RESULT NOT SUBMITTED

Division Three – July 24:

Didsbury 2nd XI 70-4 (20; Jen Taylor-Reid 35, Georgie Morton 3-10) (5pts) Woodley 71-2 (15; Marika Smith 23, Tasneem Akram 2-17)

• Didsbury’s seconds lost their first league match since defeat by Stockport Georgians at the start of the season, but this second defeat of the year effectively spelt the end of their title hopes.

July 26:

Chester Boughton Hall 2nd XI v Lymm Oughtrington Park – match tied with both teams scoring 85 runs, 15 pts each, no further details available at present

• This was the first meeting of the season between the two sides without a victory, and this tied match means that both are still searching for a win, but also of course that neither will end the season with a blank record. This is the fourth tied match of the year in CWCL competitions.

July 30:

Didsbury 2nd XI 155-3 (30; Lucy Smith 93, Hannah Marshall 28, Laura Wilson 2-18) (25pts) Hawarden Park 44 (18; Christina Ryan 2-4, Tasneem Akram 2-7, Millie Frost 2-10) (2pts)

• Lucy Smith made the highest division three score of the season, but fell seven short of a , as Didsbury ran out comfortable winners.

Stockport Georgians 103-5 (20; Nicole Baker-Tunney 29, Beth Garnett 20*, Beth Nicholson 2-14) (25pts) Chester Boughton Hall 2nd XI 74-3 (20; Nicholson 39*) (7pts)

• Another solid performance which extended Georgians’ winning run, and which took them to the brink of the title.

August 6:

Stockport Georgians 156-4 (20; Zoe Jones 33ret, Natalie Bell 32ret, Beth Garnett 32ret, Nicole Baker-Tunney 30ret) (25pts) Lymm Oughtrington Park 46-7 (20; Jones 2-2) (1pt) (All Stockport Georgians wickets were Retired Out, so Lymm do not receive bonus points for these)

• Stockport Georgians are the division three champions for 2017, and they wrapped things up in some style, scoring at almost eight per over and depriving the Lymm attack of the chance to take any wickets at all. They can now make it a double by winning the final of the Development Knockout Cup in two weeks’ time.

Hawarden Park 127-2 (20; Rachel Warrenger 59*) (25pts) Woodley 95-5 (20; Fiona Reeve 18, Katy Martin 2-16) (6pts)

• Rachel Warrenger carried her bat to lead her Hawarden side to victory, a win that possibly gives them the advantage over today’s opponents in the race for third place, although the sides will meet again in Stockport this coming Sunday.

Fixtures in division 3 awaiting possible re-arrangement:

Lymm v Chester 2nd XI Chester 2nd XI v Woodley

The next meeting of the League Committee will take place this Tuesday, August 8, at 1930 at Lymm Oughtrington Park CC. Please make every effort to ensure your club is represented.

T20 DIVISIONAL COMPETITION Western Division – August 1:

Chester Boughton Hall Deemons v Oakmere Kats – Match cancelled

• The Chester ground was unfit for play here for what would have been the decisive match in the division. The teams have decided not to re-arrange, which sends Chester through to a final against Eastern Division champions Stockport Trinity, and means that Chester will be involved in two matches on Finals Day, which is to be staged on their own ground.

Eastern Division – July 31:

Woodley v Didsbury Swordettes – RESULT NOT SUBMITTED

KNOCKOUT CUPS Knockout Cup – Semi Final – July 25:

Chester Boughton Hall Deemons 104 (20; Kate Coppack 29*, Nadia Wheeler 22, Hannah Wicks 3-21, Olivia Smith 2-4, Katy Hart 2-5) Stockport Trinity Fire 74-7 (20; Kate Harvey 21, Lorna Starkey 2-8, Dawn Prestidge 2-10, Annette Axon 2-21)

• Chester produced an impressive display in all departments to progress to a final against Didsbury. The Deemons scoring rate was healthy from the start, but Kate Coppack and Nadia Wheeler later produced several overs where more than 10 runs were scored. Former Scotland international Wheeler could be the latest handy addition to the Chester squad. Trinity however were up against it right from the start, as they managed only 17 in the first nine overs whilst also losing three key batsmen – two of them dismissed by Lorna Starkey. Although the Stockport club added another 28 in the next three overs, the overall asking rate proved just too steep. • Wheeler joins the list of full internationals to have played in CWCL competitions, alongside , Laura MacLeod, , , Helen Wardlaw and Mina Khatun.

The line-up for Finals Day at Chester Boughton Hall on Sunday August 20 is:

Development Knockout Cup (1000) – Stockport Georgians v Didsbury 2nd XI Knockout Cup (1330) – Didsbury Swordettes v Chester Boughton Hall Deemons

The line-up for Finals Day at Chester Boughton Hall on Sunday August 20 is:

Development Knockout Cup (1000) – Stockport Georgians v Didsbury 2nd XI Knockout Cup (1330) – Didsbury Swordettes v Chester Boughton Hall Deemons T20 Divisional Competition (1630) – Stockport Trinity Fire v Chester Boughton Hall Deemons

A 1000 start is necessary, and the start times for the second and third matches must be regarded as approximate. This is because Chester Boughton Hall is also hosting a men’s Cheshire Cup semi-final on the same day, the League will only have access to the second ground and to two changing rooms. Clubs should note that, although neutral umpires will be appointed by the League for these matches, they should still provide their own scorers. Anyone arriving for match two should try to do so before 1200, owing to the pressure on car parking spaces expected on the day.

CHESHIRE SENIORS

NatWest Women’s County T20 Division Three – July 30:

Cheshire 67-7 (16; Kate Coppack 27, Una Paramjothy 3-22, Harriet Leach 2-10) Leicestershire 54-6 (16; Leach 18, Raffaella Rodighiero 2-3) (Restricted to 16 overs per side)

• Division 3 Group B came down to a final day showdown between the sides in the top three places from the previous three matchdays. Had Cheshire lost this match, their hopes of the title and claiming the sole promotion place would have gone, and having posted a target of a little more than three per over, things didn’t look good at halfway. However, Raffaella Rodighiero’s amazing spell of two wickets for three runs in four overs, with two maidens, led the way as Cheshire pulled this one out of the bag.

Shropshire 67-7 (20; Lara Jones 27, Kerry Hartnett 2-6, Kate Coppack 2-11) Cheshire 52-3 (12.5; Carys White 16) (Cheshire won on faster scoring rate)

• Cheshire then went on to beat Shropshire and warp up the first divisional title for the county’s women’s team in 12 years. Having had such a good session in the field in match one, Cheshire were far from concerned to be back in the field just a few minutes later for the first innings of match two, and our bowlers largely carried on from where they left off, restricting Shropshire to little more than three per over. Cheshire were within 16 runs of the victory target when rain forced an early conclusion.

Cheshire: Kerry Hartnett, Dawn Prestidge, Phoebe Cottam, Kate Coppack, Hannah Snape, Carys White, Raffaella Rodighiero, Nadia Wheeler, Kennedy Nuttall, Sarah Worsdale, Katie Haszeldine.

If the format stays the same next season, Cheshire will return to the national second division, but will have few local fixtures save for either one or two home matchdays. The opponents will be Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire, Wales, Scotland, Hampshire, Somerset, Berkshire and Durham.

CHESHIRE JUNIOR GIRLS’ TEAMS

Women's Under 17 County Championship A Division Group 1 – July 27: Durham 73 (24.2; Natalie Bell 3-4, Sammi Short 2-12, Kaytlin Watterson 2-28) Cheshire 74-0 (27.4; Katie Bennett 24*, Emma Royle 17*)

• An excellent all-round bowling display, before the opening batsmen finished the job

August 2:

Nottinghamshire 68 (26; Christine Lawson 3-13, Kathryn Jackson 2-6) Cheshire 54-3 (13.5; Sammi Short 15) (Cheshire won on faster scoring rate)

• The good run of results in the main Championship continued, and Cheshire now sit second in the table

Women’s Under 17 County T20 Group 1 – July 28: Cheshire 86-8 (20; Carys White 18, Megan Cureton 18) Durham 90-4 (18.3)

• Durham got home with nine balls to spare to avenge their defeat in the longer form of the game the previous day

Cheshire 56-8 (20; Carys White 22) Yorkshire 59-4 (8.3; Kaytlin Watterson 2-14, Christine Lawson 2-15) Cheshire 56-8 (20; Carys White 22) Yorkshire 59-4 (8.3; Kaytlin Watterson 2-14, Christine Lawson 2-15)

• The Cheshire innings was a struggle against a strong Yorkshire attack, and although four wickets were taken in reply, the White Rose county still won with more than 11 overs to spare

Women's Under 15 County Championship A Division Group 1 – July 31: Cheshire 100-7 (33; 27) Nottinghamshire 101-3 (17; Abby Nicholson 3-27) • Despite three wickets for Abby Nicholson, Notts ran out comfortable winners

August 2: Cheshire 155-3 (30; Amy Jones 76, Becky Jones 46*) Durham 80 (25.3; Madeline Arthur 2-5, Leah Holland 2-15) • Amy Jones and Becky Jones’ century partnership took Cheshire to a formidable total, before the bowlers finished the job

Women’s Under 15 County T20 Group 2 – July 25:

Leicestershire 92-5 (20; Lily Scudder 2-19) Cheshire 88-8 (20; Molly Price 21*)

• Molly Price top scored for Cheshire from the number nine batting spot, but having been 36-6 earlier, Cheshire could not quite get over the line.

Cheshire 94-4 (20; Megan Cureton 34*, Amy Jones 22) Cumbria 95-5 (19.1; Abby Nicholson 2-2)

• Megan Cureton led a solid Cheshire batting effort, but Cumbria reached their target in the final over.

Women's Under 13 County Championship B Division Group 1 – August 1: Cheshire 69-2 (20; Sophie Winward 19) Shropshire 70-6 (16.3; Rebecca Othick 2-11)

August 2:

Cheshire 145-4 (35; Laurie Sheridan 41, Sophie Winward 31, Georgia Heath 27*) Leicestershire 45 (15; Bailey Colman 4-4, Izzi Pearson 2-3)

• After the previous day’s disappointment, this was an excellent performance and a commanding win for the youngest Cheshire girls’ team
