Adams: Pop Culture and Pedagogy: Taking Up School Documentaries in Teacher Education (Under the direction of James Trier) In the forward to Reading Television , Fiske and Hartley (2003) write that television programs ”constitute a gigantic empirical archive of human sense-making, there for the taking, twenty-four/seven” (p.xviii). In addition, this “gigantic empirical archive” also includes fiction films, video games, documentary films, commercials, news media, radio, Internet, and many other forms of mass-produced visual media found in popular culture. In this dissertation I explore a particular piece of this contemporary archive. I suggest pedagogical projects based on a cultural studies analysis of “school docs,” a particular genre of documentary films that I have defined and catalogued. This genre includes such documentary films as: Hoop Dreams (1994) , Mad Hot Ballroom (2004), OT: Our Town (2002) , Stupid in America (2006), Waiting for Superman (2010), and The War on Kids (2009). The pedagogical projects that I conceptualize are intended to explore issues and topics relevant to teacher education coursework; specifically issues and topics associated with the teaching of Social Foundations of Education. -

Scriptura 114 (2015:1), pp. 1-11 http://scriptura.journals.ac.za A WHITE MIST IN THE BLACK UNISA Tumi Senokoane Discipline of Theological Ethics Unisa Abstract The academic institutions in South Africa are systematically and structurally white. In short, shades of white ethics blight academic institutions such as Unisa. This article, therefore, aims to expose the argument that Unisa is still excluding black academics on the basis of race. Black academics are directly and indirectly subjected to institutional racism, which dramatically undermines their chances of academic success. Institutional racism, otherwise known as white ethics, positions itself as a standard or norm in the institution and at the same time places itself as the only good, and other experiences and knowledge as bad and does not meet the standard. The article will argue in contrast that blackness and black experience and knowledge should be placed as the good and whiteness as bad, thereby calling for black ethics. Key Words: Ethics; Exclusion; Institutional Racism; Worldview; Revolution Introduction This article is a result of the Round Table Ethics discussions that are organised by the Vice- Chancellor and Principal of the University of South Africa (Unisa), Prof Mandla Makhanya, and which I was invited to present. On 6 June 2014 an invitation was sent via Unisa’s Intcom, and my title read, “A white mist in the black Unisa”. On the same day Dr Jeanette Botha (Director in the Office of Principal and Vice-Chancellor at Unisa) phoned me asking if I had the right topic, to which I responded that I did. -

I’m Offended! The Coddling Comfort of Political Correctness Smothering the Free Exchange of Ideas on College Campuses Lisa A. Stefani Professional Development Report Spring 2015 Political Correctness, or the action of modifying ones speech to be particularly careful in word choice so as not to offend anyone, is widely acknowledged, accepted and endorsed on college campuses – Grossmont College included. Such ideals are thought to bring understanding and unity on a campus with a multicultural student and faculty populous. The goal of academic institutions is to educate their students and expand their fund of knowledge. Inherent in that goal is freedom of speech. Can we accomplish that goal with the speech codes dictated by political correctness? GOALS: The goal of this Professional Development project is to examine political correctness in the context of the academic environment and explore the implications of its use on dialogue, learning, and the future of education. Summary Political Correctness is a pervasive ideology on college campuses throughout the United States of America. Far beyond common sense, good manners, and tact, today’s Political Correctness surpasses any logical modicum of politeness and encompasses a rapidly growing list of words that are forbidden to be used because they are deemed, “offensive.” All over this country teachers have to watch every word they say because the Political Correctness Police (PCP) have set up strict speech guidelines with an ever growing list of what cannot be said due to its “offensiveness.” Students have been empowered to add their own words, phrases, and uses to this list at random reporting any “violation” of the extensive and nebulous code to people in administrative positions who are quick to take swift and decisive action against the teacher based solely on the student’s word. -
