It turned out he was the Crow King, and as a thank you for saving his life, he gave the boy a silver trumpet, which he could always use to call the crow for help in times of need. Then the bird flew away, and the silver trumpet lay unused for years and years - until the day the country was engulfed by war, and the enemy army was closing in on Poznań’s gates. Not thinking too long, Bolko grabbed the silver trumpet and blew it as hard as he could. Then, at the sound of the trumpet, a huge murder of crows appeared over the city, which attacked the enemy armies and chased the invader away. This was how the boy bugler’s good heart helped save the city! 68 The Legend of the The Legend of Lech, 2 Poznań Billy Goats 3 Czech and Rus

In 1551, when Poznań Town Hall was being rebuilt, a great feast was due to take place in the celebration of installing a new clock on its tower. 69 The Legend Colour the picture 4 of St. Martin

It was one of those really ferocious winters, with freezing cold, deep snow and biting winds. In these hostile conditions, a Roman legionary marched with his army. Wrapped up warmly in his military coat, he noticed a beggar on the ground, huddled with cold. Seeing the poor, torn rags the man was wearing, the legionary took pity on him and gave him half of his own coat. Who was this Roman legionary, you ask? Why, it was Saint Martin - the patron saint of travellers, beggars and soldiers, and also a role model to a Poznań baker, Walenty. It was he who in 1891 first baked pastries filled with sweetmeats, in the shape of the horseshoe of St. Martin’s faithful steed, and then shared them with the poor during a church fair. Today, no one in Poznań can even imagine November 11th without having a St Martin’s Croissant, as the pastries came to be called, and sharing it with others. Fig. S.
