Over the last two decades, Wurm has also explored clothing as a sculptural theme – as a second skin, protective shell, outline, or the filling out of volume – in works such as his large-scale installations where fixed architectural components are dressed in knitted pullovers. He has also focused on the notion of time in his complex multi-disciplinary work: from the shortest-lived pieces, the „dust sculptures“, to the performative One-Minute Sculptures.

In recent years, Wurm has been the subject of solo gallery shows in Switzerland, , USA, Korea, Hungary and the Philippines. Solo museum exhibitions include Erwin Wurm: Peace & Plenty, Albertina Museum, (2018); Erwin Wurm: Performative Sculptures, 21er Haus, Belvedere, Vienna (2017); Erwin Wurm, Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Arts, Duisburg, Germany (2017); Carl Spitzweg – Erwin Wurm, Leopold Museum, Vienna (2017); Erwin Wurm, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, São Paulo, Brazil (2017); Erwin Wurm, Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2016); Erwin Wurm: One Minute Sculptures, Schindler House, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, West Hollywood, CA (2016).

Wurm has twice participated in the Venice Biennale. At the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, he exhibited his installation Narrow House in the Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti as part of the collaborative event Glasstress, and he returned to Venice for the 57th Biennale in 2017, where he represented Austria.

With The Serious Life of a Ridiculous Man KÖNIG GALERIE presented Erwin Wurm’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. It was also the artist’s first solo presentation in Berlin since Bei Mutti at Berlinische Galerie in 2016.

Art and fashion have always been very close in their meaning. in both genres, it is all about the reflection of contemporary themes, the quest for borders and the pictorial question about the meaning of life. Over the last few years, a series of exciting projects and ideas have emerged. This is also the fruitful encounter between the French luxury brand Hermes and the Austrian artist Erwin Worm.

The cooperation between the French luxury brand Hermes and the Austrian artist Erwin Wurm focuses on personalities and genres, values and functions. Hermès, always in contact with the contemporary art scene, has been able to achieve an ideal fusion between a serious, aesthetic and sculptural, humorous "language" with worm. outfit and pose of the Hermès men (fashion) enter into a sincere-spontaneous and into a mocking dialogue. the portraits developed by the artist bear names such as: the anarchist, the psychoanalyst, the hunter, the judge, the traveler, the mathematician or the purist.

ERWIN WURM BAGS WALKING

Wurm has produced a body of work that explores the exciting possibilities of sculpture, pushing the boundaries of this static art form to incorporate participatory, temporal, and psychological elements. As an artist, Wurm is interested in conditions that test the limits of form and evoke the absurdity that can be found in the routine and mundane actions of everyday life. For Wurm, all forms, including our own bodies, can be considered and activated as sculpture. Wurm will also often attribute human traits to inanimate objects, by giving human appendages to luxury handbags or moss-covered boulders as a way to demonstrate the socially reinforced implications that these objects hold through enticing anthropomorphic forms.

As a challenge to our accepted impressions of the world around us and our perceptions of everyday reality, the frankfurter forms evoke anthropomorphic physical qualities and movement, with an anatomy of long ‘limbs’ and ‘bodies’ that visually mimic the recognizable encased meat shape. typical to wurm’s overall oeuvre, these works are both familiar yet strange, and evoke a sense of contemplation from the viewer.
