The accomplished actor who proved himself (to some people’s surprise) in Rain Man, CORY ATKINS (ext. 257) Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia? Or is it the mystifying creature of Hollywood whose recent MICHAEL VAN ZON (ext. 241) years have been plagued by peculiar PR problems? VINCENT ALOI (ext. 241) DIRECTOR, MEDIA OPERATIONS Over the past few weeks I’ve encountered people with all three takes on Mr. C. But, regardless, all CATHY PROWSE (ext. 223) seem to find him fascinating. I know this because — more than for any other actor I’ve interviewed BRITISH COLUMBIA 604.904.8622 — their eyes light up when they find out we spoke. Then comes that question: “What was he like?” WESTERN SALES MANAGER DIANE RAJH The short answer is, he was pretty normal. He was tired, he’d just “locked picture” on his new ALBERTA 403.266.4412 World War II movie Valkyrie earlier that day. He was passionate about the film, gracious and polite. WESTERN SALES MANAGER And his brain moved faster than his mouth, which often meant he was onto a new concept before he’d ELIZABETH D’ARTOIS finished with the first one. But that wasn’t what intrigued me the most. What I found most fascinating QUEBEC 514.868.0005 about Mr. Cruise was his openness. DIRECTOR, SALES Now, by “openness” I don’t mean that he told me secrets about Suri, or finally explained all that SOPHIE JODOIN (ext. 222) ACCOUNT MANAGER stuff about Thetans. I mean that he put no conditions on our lengthy phone interview. There were GENEVIÈVE ROSSIGNOL (ext. 224) no topics I could not broach. He did not ask to approve the story before it went to press (which is a SALES COORDINATOR deal breaker here at Famous, but you’d be surprised how many publications agree to this stipulation). ANNIE DESJARDINS (ext. 223) And perhaps most interesting of all — when the call came through it was not, as is almost always ATLANTIC CANADA 902.576.3131 the case, a publicist or assistant waiting to patch me through. Instead, the voice on the other end of ATLANTIC SALES MANAGER JILL HEIGHWAY the phone was as familiar as my own: “Marni, this is Tom Cruise.” SPECIAL THANKS VÉRONIQUE ALARIE, Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. Unlike, say, Jim Carrey or even Mike Myers, Cruise is usually quite MATHIEU CHANTELOIS, JOAN GRANT, ELLIS JACOB, PAT MARSHALL, happy to do interviews, to promote his films. Suddenly the power goes out; no one knows why. No electricity, no gasoline. Their solar power system isn’t working. Over the following days, the radio reports a thousand theories: technical breakdowns, terrorism, disease and uncontrolled violence across the continent. Then, one day, the radio stops broadcasting. Absolute silence. Step by ominous step, everything that Nell, a would-be academic, and Eva, a hard working contemporary dancer, have come to rely on is stripped away: parental protection, information, food, safety, friends, lovers, music -- all gone. They are faced with a world where rumor is the only guide, trust is a scarce commodity, gas is king and loneliness is excruciating. To battle starvation, invasion and despair, Nell and Eva fall deeper into a primitive life that tests their endurance and bond. Ultimately, the sisters must work together to survive and learn to discover what the earth will provide.

  • The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
PRODUCTION BRIEF In Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” Sam Wilson aka The Falcon and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience. According to executive producer Kevin Feige, who is president of Marvel Studios and chief creative officer of Marvel, the series gave filmmakers a chance to dive a little deeper into two intriguing characters. “Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are spectacular actors and we felt like we hadn't explored their stories enough as Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes,” says Feige. “We wanted to learn more about both of them after the interactions they had with each other in ‘The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Civil War.’ It was a very fun dynamic. We thought that if we ever had the opportunity, we’d watch a whole show with the two of them, and Disney+ finally gives us that opportunity.” Debuting exclusively on Disney+ on March 19, 2021, “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” has the cinematic feel of a feature film, but plays out over six episodes. “It’s an epic, character-driven story,” says director Kari Skogland. “We get to go inside these characters and their world in a much more intimate way. If the movies were a snack, this six-hour series is the meal. And yet, it has all of the wonderful things that come with the MCU—action, comedy, the high-octane pace, familiar faces and new characters. It’s all incredibly relatable. “They know each other and they share a common denominator, Steve Rogers, but they aren’t particularly good friends,” continues Skogland.

The 30th Annual Genie Awards, known as the Canadian Oscars, took place yesterday in Toronto. Canadian helmer Kari Skogland (Liberty Stands Still, The Stone Angel) directed the story, inspired by the shocking real-life events detailed in Martin McGartland’s autobiography. In the sweeping, yet highly personal political thriller, Across the Universe star Jim Sturgess plays Martin McGartland, a Belfast lad who spied on the IRA for the British Police in the late 80s. The film played in the U.S. last August and co-stars Ben Kinglsey, Rose McGowan, Nathalie Press and Kevin Zegers. Press received a 2010 Independent Spirit nomination for her performance and the film collected the Best Canadian Feature Film award at 2008’s Vancouver International Film Festival. London-based production designer Eve Stewart brings an intimate, character-based style to all of her work, informed by exhaustive grassroots research. As filming took place on location in Belfast, Stewart retained an awareness of her responsibility to the people who inspired the story. “This was both a joy and a pressure as I was so determined not to do any of the communities involved a disservice,” she says. “I worked incredibly hard to ask those who had been directly involved for their truths.
