calgary.ca/greenline | contact 311 Centre Street – Main Streets program

The City’s Main Streets initiative (calgary.ca/mainstreets) aims to analyze the needs of neighbourhood residents, along with economic research, to identify success criteria for future growth in 24 main streets across Calgary. Priorities for Centre Street and surrounding neighbourhoods are identified through Main Streets in 2015 and the Green Line North engagement in 2013 and 2014. Green Line North is working with Main Streets to make Centre Street an attractive and active street for people to socialize, work, shop, dine, and celebrate local events. Green Line will build on the community input/engagement from the Main Streets program, and integrate your ideas into the Green Line North analysis.

What is TOD?WHAT IS TOD? T O D

Transit-oriented development (TOD): Communities where residents can live, work, play, shop and learn in a mixed-use environment that is in close proximity to rapid public transit and where the private automobile is an option, not a necessity.

THREE BASIC COMPONENTS

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (transportation) +(open space) +(buildings) = D T O

Design Charrette: A multiple-day, collaborative workshop led by a consultant team that brings together citizens, developers and policymakers to create a feasible and “85% ready” plan based on four feedback loops: visioning, ideas, concepts, and solutions.

Centre Street TOD

TOD opportunities along Centre Street were evaluated in the 2013/2014 North Central LRT (now Green Line North) Corridor Study.

Key findings included: • Priority TOD site opportunities at: - Key station locations along the corridor - Neighbourhoods adjacent to downtown (Railtown, Eau Claire and Stampede) - Aurora Business Park - Centre Street where there is one lane of traffic in each direction (9 Avenue to McKnight) • Recommendations included strategies to help improve commercial areas and additional engagement with the development community to assess the potential for TOD.

Additional planning for TOD along Centre Street will be done in consultation with the public and the development community.

TOD Typologies

LIVE /liv/: to occupy a home, dwell. City dwellers, for purposes of convenience and cost, are increasingly exploring the option of living in townhouses and apartments located near public transit. This is the touchstone of TOD!

WORK /werk/: a means of earning income; employment. Commuters are looking to reduce the time spent stuck in traffic – a strong reason for TOD, which locates jobs near public transit. The Earth also benefits from lower Green House Gas emissions!

PLAY /pla/: activity engaged in for enjoyment and recreation, especially by children. TOD encourages kids and adults to safely have fun in the community’s public spaces, moving them from the indoor video game to the outdoor city playground. It’s time to get off the couch!

SHOP /SHap/: visit one or more stores to buy goods. TOD enhances the ability to shop locally, to walk to the corner store without the need of driving a car. This also fosters a sense of neighbourhood and community identity!

LEARN /lern/: gain or acquire knowledge of or skill in study, being taught. Schools are the focal point of community life. TOD encourages kids, students and teachers to walk or bike to school rather than be driven – a public health benefit, as well!
