The tourism and hospitality industry serving these visitors accounts for close to 20 percent of the total workforce in metropolitan Washington.1 Tourism, therefore, is a vital force in the local economy and tour buses, which have been estimated to serve as many as one-third of the visitors to Washington’s historical and cultural attractions, perform a function crucial to both the economic life of the city and its role as the nation’s capital.2 The benefits related to tour bus operations currently come at a significant cost, however. Large numbers of tour buses contribute to traffic congestion on the roadways serving the District and its environs. Several factors compound the adverse traffic impacts associated with tour bus operations.

  • Campus Guidebook 5Th Edition
CAMPUS GUIDEBOOK 5TH EDITION Wesley Theological Seminary Letter from the Office of Community Life Welcome Home! Whether you are a new student to our school or a returning member of our community, I am so glad that you are here. Wesley Theological Seminary is one of the largest protestant seminaries in the world-but we foster a small-community feeling. It is our hope that you feel the warmth of our community through diverse interactions and encounters with the student body, faculty, and staff as you discern your calling to minister to the world. I pray that every preparation made for your studies will help to be a blessing in your journey of theological education. As the Program Administrator in the Office of Community Life, it is my job to foster and facilitate communications and resources as you prepare for your seminary studies. This includes new student orientation, disability/accommodation support, and the Board of Ordained Ministry visits, etc. The Office of Community Life strives to strengthen community by ensuring that the inclusivity of all remains at the core of our community covenant. I love that my job offers me an opportunity to work with faculty, staff and students to provide the same support that was offered to me when I first arrived to the Wesley Community. I hope that this is the beginning of a similarly positive experience for you as you discern your journey of theological education. This booklet was created to be a resource for you as you are introduced to life here— in DC, at Wesley, and as a student.

th 401 9 Street, NW North Lobby, Suite 500 Washington, DC 20004 Tel: 202.482.7200 Fax: 202.482.7272 www.ncpc.gov November 16, 2018 Attached is the list of agenda items tentatively scheduled for the National Capital Planning Commission meeting on Thursday, December 6, 2018, 1:00 PM and at subsequent meetings. Commission meetings are open to the public, and individuals or groups wishing to offer their viewpoint may give testimony on any project listed on the Tentative Agenda that requires Commission approval. Prospective speakers must meet the registration deadline (shown below). The Tentative Agenda classification of projects as Proposed Action Items, Delegated Items, and Exceptions is preliminary and subject to change prior to the Commission meeting. Understanding the circumstances for such changes will help the public to participate in the Commission's review process. Project classifications are as follows: • Action Items are projects that will be presented and discussed at the Commission meeting. Members of the public are invited to give testimony on these projects. Some projects listed as Proposed Action Items on the Tentative Agenda will be moved to the Consent Calendar if no speakers have registered by the deadline (see schedule below). The Commission votes on the Consent Calendar Items but does not hear a presentation or public testimony. • Delegated Items are projects that the Commission delegates to the Chairman, Executive Committee, or Executive Director. Some projects listed as Proposed Delegated Items may become Action Items if a member of the public registers to speak on that item by the deadline (see schedule below). • Exceptions are types of projects where NCPC staff determines that a project is exempt from Commission review, based on certain criteria.

City Within a City GREATER U STREET HERITAGE TRAIL For the first half of the twentieth century, this U Street neighborhood inspired and sustained the rich social, civic, and cultural life of Washington’s African American community. Follow this trail to the places that tell the story of this exceptional community in the heart of the nation’s capital. Welcome. Visitors to Washington, D.C. flock to the National Mall, where grand monuments symbolize the nation’s highest ideals. This walking tour invites you to deepen your experience of the nation’s capital by discovering the places where people in the Shaw/U Street neighborhood — for half a century the heart of African American business and culture in Washington — worked to make those ideals a reality. Adjacent to the famed Howard University, this neighborhood was home to Duke Ellington, leading African American art- ists and professionals, and a thriving black community of churches, schools, and social and civic organizations. Here people of color responded with strength to the injus- tices of segregation, engaging in some of the nation’s first civil rights protests while simultaneously building a vibrant urban center of their own —“a city within a city.” Duke Ellington mural G.
