The following new combinations are also presented: Phycosoma spundana (Roberts, 1978) n. comb., Argyrodella pusillus (Saaristo, 1978) n. comb., Rhomphaea recurvatus (Saaristo, 1978) n. comb., Rhomphaea barycephalus (Roberts, 1983) n. comb., Bardala labarda (Roberts, 1982) n. comb., Moneta coercervus (Roberts, 1978) n. comb., Nanume naneum (Roberts, 1983) n. comb., Parasteatoda mundula (L. Koch, 1872) n. comb., Robertia braueri (Simon, 1898). n. comb., Selimus placens (Blackwall, 1877) n. comb., Sesato setosa n. gen, n. sp., Spinembolia clabnum (Roberts, 1978) n. comb., and Stoda libudum (Roberts, 1978) n. comb.. Also the opposite sex of four species are described for the fi rst time, namely females of Phycosoma spundana (Roberts, 1978) and P. menustya (Roberts, 1983) and males of Spinembolia clabnum (Roberts, 1978) and Stoda libudum (Roberts, 1978). SALM IUCN Consultant Report of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources to the Government of Seychelles prepared with the financial support of the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Wildlife Fund Morges, Switzerland August 1978 FOREWORD The importance of marine resources and the delicacy of the support system upon which they depend is becoming increasingly appreciated at both national and inter- national levels. The current IUCN and World Wildlife Fund Marine Conservation Programme specifically ad- dresses to this fact. Seychelles relies heavily on marine resources, not only as food for the inhabitants and for export, but also on the economic potential of the aesthetic characteristics of the physical and biological components of the surround- ing marine ecosystem. In this regard, the government of Seychelles has not only responded to international concern over the protection of marine resources but has taken some measures to protect and to regulate the exploitation of these resources. The government recognises that these measures are in- adequate for the long-term sustenance of these resources and has accordingly sought advice to elaborate a more realistic approach. The present report, and the recom- mendations therein, attempts to outline basic conservation needs for the maintenance of the productivity of the marine resources and suggests steps that need to be taken to meet them. -
Assessing Conservation Value of Islands in the Central Seychelles
ASSESSING CONSERVATION VALUE OF ISLANDS IN THE CENTRAL SEYCHELLES ABSTRACT Data gathered in the island assessment process are used to prioritise the islands visited (and, by extrapolation, other islands in the central Seychelles) for conservation value, particularly in regard to conservation of endemic land birds. Several criteria of particular importance for endemic bird conservation are identified, and these could be used in more rapid assessment of other islands in the area for conservation. INTRODUCTION Several authors have attempted to formalise criteria to evaluate land for conservation purposes in order that the most appropriate sites can be selected for protection (see, for example, Smith and Theberge, 1986; Usher, 1986). There is no simple consensus that can be applied in all situations although a number of biological and physical indicators that are commonly cited include the presence of rare species of animals and plants, or rare habitats, diversity (of species or habitats), size, "representativeness" or "naturalness", and the relative fragility of an arez or habitat (Bibby, 1998). In addition, social, cultural and management practicalities need to be considered, especially where an area has multiple use (such as scientific research or recreation in addition to conservation). While many criteria emphasise existing conservation values, the concept of "potential value" (Ratcliffe, 1977) or, in this case, "rehabilitation value", is particularly important for the islands of the granitic Seychelles. The original habitats of all islands have been profoundly altered in the past 200 years. Active human intervention is likely to be necessary to realise the conservation value of any of the small or medium-sized islands. -

Built in 1840 and renovated in 1999, it remains the bustling heart of the capital and definitely the best place to buy fresh fruits, fish, vegetables and spices. An attractive array of boutiques and shops selling a variety of souvenirs, clothing and local works of art further complement the lively atmosphere that is especially vibrant on Saturday mornings. Embarkation at 12 noon and departure to the Saint Anne Marine Park. This Marine National Park has one of the largest areas of sea grass of the granitic islands where green and hawksbill turtles are often found. Bottlenose Dolphins also frequent the park. St Anne Island was the location of Seychelles’ first settlement in 1770, away from the once crocodile-infested swamps on Mahé. Once a whaling station, during the Second World War St Anne was also a base for the Royal Marines defending Victoria Harbour. It is alleged that there is a rich treasure buried on nearby Moyenne Island while Round Island was once a leper colony. The St Anne Marine National Park is an important part of the natural and cultural heritage of the Seychellois people. Spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) Collected by Birdlife Gef Island Assessment Project 1999-2000
SPIDERS (ARACHNIDA, ARANEAE) COLLECTED BY BIRDLIFE GEF ISLAND ASSESSMENT PROJECT 1999-2000 MICHAEL I. SAARISTO' and MICHAEL J. HILL^ ABSTRACT During the BirdLife GEF Island Assessment project 1999-2000 a total of 2,725 spider specimens were collected. Of these, 887 were adult specimens and 1,838 juveniles. The great majority of specimens (98%) could be determined down to species level. In all, the collection included 68 species belonging to 23 families. Five species new to science were collected. METHODS Spiders were collected by a variety of methods, including pitfall trapping, sweeping and beating, and were occasionally taken in Malaise traps (see Hill, this volume, for more details), on the ten islands described in the above reports, and also on Aride (pitfall trapping only) in 2000. Specimens collected were sorted and stored in 70% ethanol for later identification. RESULTS Overall, a total of 2,725 specimens were sorted for identification. Of these, 887 were adult and 1,838 juvenile; 98% of specimens could be determined to species. Sixty- eight species were represented in the collection, belonging to 23 families; at present, a total of 19 1 spider species (in 39 families) are known on the granitic Seychelles, with further species from the coralline islands (the latter mainly from families Araneidae, Oonopidae, Tetragnathidae and Theridiidae; Roberts 1983, Saaristo 2001 b).
