Hits Fromthe Horn of Nini Rosso Internationally oriented recording projects are hardly ever news in these days of Hollywood mariachi, Liverpudlian raga recitals and Nashville-nurtured bossa novaniks. The sound of Nini Rosso, however, can neither be neatly packaged in any slickly gimmicked ethnic bag nor be categorized as national or (thank you, but no thank you) “continental” in character. Signor Rosso, who plies his trade as a virtuoso trumpet player in his native , plays like an angel, and while angels, from graphic evidence, anyway, seem to have flourished in The Eternal City, they are rarely considered to be merely colorful local characters. Nini Rosso’s music is international—or perhaps universal is a better word. The melodies he plays in this particular set are from England, , Brazil, France, , Japan, Israel and the United States. They are the kind of melodies, however, that recognize no customs or language barriers. They wing their way across mountains and oceans to become part of a wide, free world of popular culture. They give simple, lovely, uncomplicated pleasure. What a gift! Nini Rosso, who is hardly known in the United States, made some sort of history in Europe in 1965 when his recording of his own composition, “11 Silenzio,” sold nearly four million copies on the Continent, topping the best-selling charts in Italy, Germany, , and the Benelux and Scandinavian countries. Previously, his “Ballad of the Trumpet,” “The Clown” and “Concerto Desperato” had also been enormous popular favorites. This particular recording, made in Rome but conducted and arranged by the gifted young American arranger-composer-conductor Joe Sherman, was designed to display the haunting sound and the unique virtuosity that Nini Rosso is able to evoke from his horn. As vehicles, Mr. Sherman and Signor Rosso have chosen Bert Kaempfert’s Strangers in the Night; John Lennon and Paul McCartney's Yesterday; a new song, Melody of the Stars, by Michel (‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”) Legrand; Somewhere, My Love, from Maurice Jarre’s Academy Award-winning score from “Doctor Zhivago”’; You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, con- which began its auspicious rise to popular favor at the 4966 San Remo Festival and solidated its appeal with a hit record by England’s Dusty Springfield; Carcara, which bears in the name of a beautiful if somewhat evil Amazonian tropical birdland was a hit last year Brazil; Fortuna, the title song of a new French-lsraeli film, by one f Israel’s best-known young composers, Dov Seltzer; still another film theme, Toshiro Mayuzumi’s Theme From “The Bible,” from John Huston’s epic cinematic interrelation of the first sections of the The Hit Trumpet Recording Genesis, and Eine ganze Nacht, a recent hit enjoying current success as Games That Lovers World That Sold 34 Million Copies Around the two engaging new compositions, Copenhagen fee ot eee Play. Finally, Nini Rosso lends his talents to Serenade by Ettore Stratta and a contribution by Joe Sherman, Johnnie, Johnnie. In all, a rich mixture, well balanced and blended, splendidly spiced and graced by the very special flavor of the most marvelous sound of Nini Rosso—a horn of plenty. —Nat Shapiro
