Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of cultural production provide the theoretical tools to approach the company as a cultural producer and not only as theatre artists. Te Living Teatre has produced largely unpopular avant-garde and political theatre for seventy years. I argue that the company’s early years demonstrate a growing reserve of symbolic capital that helps explain the company’s longevity. Furthermore, the manner in which certain events in the company’s history have been mythologized, by company members, critics, and scholars, has led to some historically inaccurate accounts. In particular, accounts of the closing of the company’s production of Te Brig in 1963 and the subsequent trial of Beck and Malina in 1964 have often been infuenced by an acceptance of company member’s anecdotal, “tall tales” approach to history rather than historical evidence and archival documents. -

The American Place Theatre was founded in 1964 and stewarded by the artistic mission of Wynn Handman. It has earned its own place in American theatrical history. Prior dissertations have chronicled specific elements of the American Place Theatre (APT), but no account has bridged the history of APT and Wynn Handman’s privately-run acting studio to the significant history of Literature to Life. The once New York City-based program that promoted English, cultural and theatrical literacy to students within the city’s public iii school system, now has a strong national following and continues to inspire students and adults across the country. This thesis will chart an historical and narrative account of Literature to Life as it emerged from the embers of the American Place Theatre and rekindled the original mission of Wynn Handman, in a different setting and for new audiences. -

The beginnings of a generation in motion, with bebop to crank the starting handle. Like the Beat Clive Edward Lazell Generation, bebop was young, hip, cool and underground. Not only did it fi re up writers such as 1938-2012 Jack Kerouac and Jack Gelber, but key directors too such as John Cassavetes and Don Siegel and an inspirational father and best friend the music chased the narrative like cat and mouse. -

1 Locating Contemporary Literature Literature in the second half of the twentieth century in the United States bears only a faint resemblance to the writing accomplished between 1900 and 1950. Early in the century, arguments as to what distinguished American literature from British led to the emphasis on plain character and plain language that marked the writing done in both realism and naturalism. Then, with the modernist sweep to overthrow most existing literary traditions (always using Ezra Pound’s rationale that making it new was to be primary), the innovation that made American poetry, fiction, and drama of keen interest to the world settled in. By 1950, however, traditional aesthetic innovation was wearing thin. The United States had endured the Great Depression, a long decade of hardship that not only dampened the promise of the American dream but changed literary methods to a surprising extent. The amalgam of cryptic modernist innovation and almost sentimental proselytizing that characterized the collective, proletarian novel and the speech- lined poems ofCOPYRIGHTED the Depression gave rise to incredibleMATERIAL variety: despite the paper shortages of World War II, published writing in the United States continued to be influential. It is in the aftermath of the war, once people had righted their perceptions about causation and blame, and had admitted again the atrocity of war itself (as well as of the Holocaust and the atomic bomb), that literature – whether called contemporary or postmodern – began to change. In Memory Judith Malina 1926–2015 Because We Are Crazy from Richard Schechner All perform their tragic play, There struts Hamlet, there is Lear, That’s Ophelia, that Cordelia; Yet they, should the last scene be there, The great stage curtain about to drop, If worthy their prominent part in the play, Do not break up their lines to weep. They know that Hamlet and Lear are gay; Gaiety transfiguring all that dread. — William Butler Yeats, “Lapis Lazuli” (1938) Fierce, yet compassionate; opinionated, yet happy to listen and engage; impassioned, yet imbued with reason; political, yet open to ideas not her own; sure of her ends, yet Talmudic in arguing the means to those ends; small of stature, yet grand in effect; regal, not haughty. Judith Malina! She cut through fogs of shillyshally. She knew — or gave the impression that she knew — where she came from, where she was, and where she was going. Judith lived a long, often difficult life in the (Living) theatre. She lived that life in partner- ship with Julian Beck, then with Hanon Reznikov and Julian, then after Julian’s death in 1985, with Hanon until his death in 2008. These were her closest work-and-love partners. But Judith was also — most ardently and totally — in loving symbiosis with the Living Theatre from (at least) her 21st birthday, 4 June 1947, when she wrote in her diary: “[...] the earliest plans for the Living Theatre, the most important work of my life, for which I am now preparing” (1984:1). Attacked, imprisoned, beleaguered, dismissed or savaged by (some) critics, artists, scholars, and journalists, Judith suffered. -

The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -
