He was educated at the University of Aberdeen, and spent a year at Merton College, Oxford. He was assistant professor under Alexander Bain at Aberdeen for some years; from 1874 to 1878 he edited the Examiner, and in 1880 he was made full professor of logic and English at Aberdeen. In 1872 he published a Manual of English Prose Literature, which was distinguished by sound judgment and sympathetic appreciation; and his Characteristics of English Poets from Chaucer to Shirley (1874) showed the same high qualities. His other works include: The Literature of the Georgian Era (1894) edited with a biographical introduction by W Knight Logic: Inductive and Deductive (1893) a monograph on Defoe in the "English Men of Letters" series (1879) three novels of small importance numerous articles on literary subjects in the 9th edition of the Encyclopaelig;dia Britannica. CHAPTER 7 The Treaty of Utrecht and Addison’s Cato: Britain’s War of the Spanish Succession, Peace and the Imperial Road Map Samia Al-Shayban I have this business of ye peace soe much at heart. (QUEEN ANNE, 1711)1 Queen Anne’s letter to her First Lord of the Treasury, Earl of Oxford, the leader of Tory party expresses her keen desire to procure the Peace of Utrecht for her war-weary nation. The Treaty of Utrecht was signed to end the War of Spanish Succession on 11 April 1713 amidst deep divisions in Queen Anne’s govern- ment. The Queen, Oxford and their supporters in the government were seek- ing peace as a means of securing England’s interests that the long war had failed to achieve.2 On the opposite side stood the war general, the Duke of Marlborough, and his Whig Cabinet allies who were adamant about continu- ing the fighting.3 Addison premiered Cato at Drury Lane on 14 April 1713 just a few days after the signing of the Peace of Utrecht amidst this foray of war and peace. It is no coincidence that the core of Cato is the conflict between those who seeks peace represented by Julius Caesar and the advocates of war under the leadership of Cato Uticensis. From its first performance, the play proved to be an immediate success. On 30 April 1713 Alexander Pope, who attended the premiere, described the audience’s enthusiastic reaction to Cato’s struggle. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract As one of the most well-known figures of the nineteenth century, John Stuart Mill was depicted extensively in journalism, pictures, life-writing and fiction. This thesis draws on a selection from these diverse and underexplored sources to offer a new perspective on Mill’s presence in Victorian cultural and emotional life. It shows how Mill figured in fierce debates about science and culture in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, and how ideas of Mill’s ‘femininity’ were used to both attack and commend him philosophically, politically and personally. Mill’s ‘Saint of Rationalism’ label continues to belie the extent to which he was associated with ideas of passion, sensitivity, tenderness, feeling, and emotion in the nineteenth century. This project explores how such terms were invoked in relation to Mill as a philosopher and politician, but also how they related to readers’ encounters with his works. More than any previous study, this thesis pays close attention to the interaction between verbal and visual depictions, and considers official images and caricatures of Mill alongside written accounts.

Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date /^Jt*, ABSTRACT As a background figure in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, William Bell Scott suffers from an unattractive reputation largely because of attitudes expressed in his Autobiographical Notes. Chapter One of this thesis examines his life and work, but although a chronological approach is used, it is Scott's wide range of activities and friends which is given prominence. In Chapter Two, Scott's Autobiographical Notes is considered. Scott's lifelong interest in journal writing is traced as much as is possible, using manuscript material in the Penkill Papers at the University of British Columbia. The chapter then covers the actual editing of the Notes by William Minto, making the point that even before his book was published Scott's potential readers were prejudging the work.
