His collection of documents relative to the painters and paintings of the eighteenth century, and especially to their vicissitudes in the auction room, is not equalled by that of any other writer, and he has with great kindli- ness gone through his lists, and supplied us with many pieces of information respecting pictures which could have been obtained from no one else. We have also to thank him for information respecting engravings, autograph letters, auction sales, etc. We must not, also, forget to thank the Editor of the Farington Diary for kindly permission to quote extensively from his stately volumes, and would like to take this opportunity of saying how grateful all writers on art should be to him, for having rescued those invaluable Diaries, and for presenting them, with important notes, as a mine of information in which persons interested in the eighteenth century can dig with the certainty of finding nuggets of value and importance. The following discoveries have been made during printing : Mr. Arthur F. Hill, of 140, New Bond Street, has in his possession a very lightly painted and delicately coloured portrait of Miss Harrop, the singer, who married Joah Bates, who conducted the first Handel Commemoration at Westminster Abbey in 1784. This was the portrait exhibited by Angelica at the Royal Academy in 1781, and it has been engraved by Delattre. Lt.-General Sir Raleigh Egerton has in his possession an oil painting, depicting the awaking of Penelope by Euryclea, which was engraved by Bartolozzi. The picture is at present lent to the Grosvenor Art Gallery at Chester. There are four Studies in the possession of Major Haldane Macfall, The White House, Perham Crescent, South Kensington, W. 14, which were, in all probability, painted by Angelica. CONTENTS CHAP. But I do not refer to so many outward voyages and both the de­ Sstruction and "civilizing" that took place in distant lands; rather, my focus is inward to other fantastic voyages of uncovering—literally— new terrain of the human body. The revitalized practice of anatomy and anatomical dissection in Spain, beginning almost mid-sixteenth century, placed the country for a brief time in the forefront of the new knowledge that has been called the "Vesalian revolution." Andreas Vesalius (1514- 1564), a physician and anatomist who trained at the Sorbonne in Paris, taught in Padua, became personal physician to Philip II, and published in 1543 his De humani corporis fabrica} This renewal of learning, a founda­ tion with profound implications for how knowledge is transmitted, af­ fected as well the literary representation of the body. In every age science discovers new wonders about the human organism, a constant reinvigo- rarion that fuels ever-expanding horizons about the textual capacity of the body, whether inscribed as a sign within a text, inscribed on itself or even cut in to.     ARTISTS' PICTURE ROOMS IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY BATH Susan Legouix Sloman In May 1775 David Garrick described to Hannah More the sense of well­ being he experienced in Bath: 'I do this, & do that, & do Nothing, & I go here and go there and go nowhere-Such is ye life of Bath & such the Effects of this place upon me-I forget my Cares, & my large family in London, & Every thing ... '. 1 The visitor to Bath in the second half of the eighteenth century had very few decisions to make once he was safely installed in his lodgings. A well-established pattern of bathing, drinking spa water, worship, concert and theatre-going and balls meant that in the early and later parts of each day he was likely to be fully occupied. However he was free to decide how to spend the daylight hours between around lOam when the company generally left the Pump Room and 3pm when most people retired to their lodgings to dine. Contemporary diaries and journals suggest that favourite daytime pursuits included walking on the parades, carriage excursions, visiting libraries (which were usually also bookshops), milliners, toy shops, jewellers and artists' showrooms and of course, sitting for a portrait. At least 160 artists spent some time working in Bath in the eighteenth century,2 a statistic which indicates that sitting for a portrait was indeed one of the most popular activities. Although he did not specifically have Bath in mind, Thomas Bardwell noted in 1756, 'It is well known, that no Nation in the World delights so much in Face-painting, or gives so generous Encouragement to it as our own'.3 In 1760 the Bath writer Daniel Webb noted 'the extraordinary passion which the English have for portraits'.4 Andre Rouquet in his survey of The Present State of the Arts in England of 1755 described how 'Every portrait painter in England has a room to shew his pictures, separate from that in which he works.

    In the Shadow of His Father: Rembrandt Peale, Charles Willson Peale, and the American Portrait Tradition URING His LIFETIME, Rembrandt Peale lived in the shadow of his father, Charles Willson Peale (Fig. 8). In the years that Dfollowed Rembrandt's death, his career and reputation contin- ued to be eclipsed by his father's more colorful and more productive life as successful artist, museum keeper, inventor, and naturalist. Just as Rembrandt's life pales in comparison to his father's, so does his art. When we contemplate the large number and variety of works in the elder Peak's oeuvre—the heroic portraits in the grand manner, sensitive half-lengths and dignified busts, charming conversation pieces, miniatures, history paintings, still lifes, landscapes, and even genre—we are awed by the man's inventiveness, originality, energy, and daring. Rembrandt's work does not affect us in the same way. We feel great respect for his technique, pleasure in some truly beau- tiful paintings, such as Rubens Peale with a Geranium (1801: National Gallery of Art), and intellectual interest in some penetrating char- acterizations, such as his William Findley (Fig. 16). We are impressed by Rembrandt's sensitive use of color and atmosphere and by his talent for clear and direct portraiture. However, except for that brief moment following his return from Paris in 1810 when he aspired to history painting, Rembrandt's work has a limited range: simple half- length or bust-size portraits devoid, for the most part, of accessories or complicated allusions. It is the narrow and somewhat repetitive nature of his canvases in comparison with the extent and variety of his father's work that has given Rembrandt the reputation of being an uninteresting artist, whose work comes to life only in the portraits of intimate friends or members of his family.

    DID JOSHUA REYNOLDS PAINT HIS PICTURES? Matthew C. Hunter Did Joshua Reynolds Paint His Pictures? The Transatlantic Work of Picturing in an Age of Chymical Reproduction In the spring of 1787, King George III visited the Royal Academy of Arts at Somerset House on the Strand in London’s West End. The king had come to see the first series of the Seven Sacraments painted by Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665) for Roman patron Cassiano dal Pozzo in the later 1630s. It was Poussin’s Extreme Unction (ca. 1638–1640) (fig. 1) that won the king’s particular praise.1 Below a coffered ceiling, Poussin depicts two trains of mourners converging in a darkened interior as a priest administers last rites to the dying man recumbent on a low bed. Light enters from the left in the elongated taper borne by a barefoot acolyte in a flowing, scarlet robe. It filters in peristaltic motion along the back wall where a projecting, circular molding describes somber totality. Ritual fluids proceed from the right, passing in relay from the cerulean pitcher on the illuminated tripod table to a green-garbed youth then to the gold flagon for which the central bearded elder reaches, to be rubbed as oily film on the invalid’s eyelids. Secured for twenty-first century eyes through a spectacular fund-raising campaign in 2013 by Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, Poussin’s picture had been put before the king in the 1780s by no less spirited means. Working for Charles Manners, fourth Duke of Rutland, a Scottish antiquarian named James Byres had Poussin’s Joshua Reynolds, Sacraments exported from Rome and shipped to London where they Diana (Sackville), Viscountess Crosbie were cleaned and exhibited under the auspices of Royal Academy (detail, see fig.

Well, here our tour is going to start...... Once upon a time there was a Duke, he came from Normandy and his name was Rainulfo Drengot. He founded the county of Aversa in 1030; since then 12 dukes succeeded to the throne until the Angevins’ arrival in 1285. Thanks to them, Aversa lived a period of prosperity but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be lasting, infact during the Aragonese and the Spanish rulership, Aversa’s decline started. Neverthless, things got better with the passing of the time, in particular under Bourbouns’ reign. When Gioacchino Murat took the key to the city, Maddalena’s complex was born and lots of mental hospitals were built all over the town. In these thousand years many important personalities visited the town, could you believe that even the General Garibaldi came to Aversa? Not only but the town also gave birth to artists and influencial people such as the musicians Cimarosa and Iommelli. But how has the town changed after these years?     Angelica Kauffman Study Day (London, 16 Sep 20) Royal Academy of Arts, London, Sep 16, 2020 Deadline: Apr 15, 2020 Marie Tavinor On the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to Angelica Kauffman taking place in Düsseldorf and London in 2020, the Royal Academy of Arts is organising a study day on the artist on Wednes- day 16 September 2020. A child prodigy and a respected painter famous all over Europe in her own lifetime, Angelica Kauff- man (1741-1807) transcended many boundaries and conventions linked to eighteenth century social norms. She embraced many facets of the Enlightenment beliefs, pursued a career to become a history painter following the neoclassical ideals and worked for some of the most prominent patrons of the time. She was also one of the two female founding members of the Roy- al Academy of Arts in London in 1768. At her death, her sculpted bust was placed next to Raphael’s in the Pantheon in Rome thereby underlining her place in the artistic canon. We welcome papers exploring the rich and versatile career of Angelica Kauffman with a fresh con- textualisation in the broader artistic, cultural, social and economic fabric of the eighteenth centu- ry. Provenance: Colonel Gould Weston, his sale, Christie’s, 15th July 1958, lot 125 as part of an album; Ralph Holland (1917-2012) Thornhill was the most important painter of interiors in the early eighteenth century and was the first British artist to be knighted, on his appointment to sergeant-painter to the King in 1720. His most celebrated works are the interior of the Great Hall at Greenwich and the dome of St. Paul’s, London. He also worked in a number of great English houses, including Blenheim, Hampton Court, Chatsworth, Easton Neston and Wimpole. This drawing may be linked to the work that Thornhill did for Isaac Loader (b.1653) at Deptford. Loader was an anchor maker by profession and was appointed Sheriff of Deptford in 1701. Ralph Thoresby (1658-1725) visited Loader’s house in 1714 and records that `the gardens are surprisingly fine and large: there are Mr Thornhill’s paintings in the Bagnio, and other garden-houses’ (see R.
