Royals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ Texas Rangers - Sunday, April 23, 2017

This & That BACK-TO-BACK MISCUES--Ian Kennedy was responsible for Kansas City’s third error of the season last night, tossing errantly to first on a pickoff attempt in the sixth inning...it marked the second miscue in as many nights after the Royals had played 66.1 consecutive errorless innings since Alcides Escobar misplayed a ground ball in the eighth inning on April 13 vs. Oakland...the three errors are still the fewest in baseball, one less than Cincinnati, while KC’s .995 fielding percentage is also one point better than the Reds (.994)...the Royals are also fourth in the Majors in double plays turned with 22. OFFENSE SPUTTERING--Kansas City hopes that starting a new week will turn things around for the bats as the club just completed a six-game stretch where it batted .204 as a team and managed just seven runs...the Royals have hit a Major League low .153 with runners in scoring position (17-for-111), including a .143 mark (6-for-42) over their last six contests...remarkably, KC went 2-4 last week despite the lack of offensive production...this is unchartered territory for the Royals, who finished fourth in the Junior Circuit last year with a .273 mark with RISP, after finishing second in the loop in both 2015 (.281) and 2014 (.271)...overall, Kansas City is 28th in the baseball in team batting (.209), 29th in team on-base pct. (.274) and last in team slugging pct. (.324). DUPER STILL SUPER--Kansas City’s replay specialist, Bill Duplissea is 6-for-6 in challenges to open 2017...he nailed #6 Friday night in the seventh inning when it was determined the Eric Hosmer did indeed get a tag on the wallet of Carlos Gomez trying to get back to first base after Alcides Escobar made an over-the- shoulder grab in short-center...there must be something in the water near the nation’s capital as only two other clubs can claim a perfect start to the year in challenges with Baltimore going 1-for-1 and Washington 3-for-3...Dupe closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, making good of 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31). ROAD WOES--The Royals will look to snap a four-game road losing streak today in Texas as well as a seven-game winless run at Globe Life Park, which dates back to last July...overall, Kansas City has gone 2-7 in their first nine contests away from Kauffman Stadium this year, being swept in Minnesota to start the season, 2-1 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, while dropping the first three here in Arlington...Kansas City went 34-47 on the road a year ago, but finished strong by winning 15 of their final 24 contests outside of Missouri. CAIN TRAIN CONTINUES TO ROLL--Lorenzo Cain went 1-for-4 last night and has now reached base in 16 of the 17 games this season...he’s also been aboard at least twice in 13 of those 17 contests as he enters play today third in the AL with a .452 on-base percentage, just behind Minnesota’s Robbie Grossman (.475) and Yankees’ third baseman Chase Headley (.456)...LoCain has already coaxed 13 walks through the first 17 games, good for fourth in the AL, and just 24 freebies shy of his career-best of 37 set in 2015. EASY TRAVEL EARLY--For the first time in team history the Royals are playing their first 31 games within the Central time zone...the stretch includes 18 games in “The K” and two road trips through Minneapolis, Houston, Arlington and Chicago totaling 13 contests...this streak will be halted with a 4-game stop at Tampa Bay on May 8-11, followed by nine more in the Central zone with six at home vs. the Orioles and Yankees, then three in Minnesota for a total of 40 of first 44 in CDT. DUFF’S STRIKEOUTS FOR BANDAGES--For every strikeout that he records in 2017, Danny Duffy will donate $500 to Noah’s Bandage Project, a local foundation that provides fun bandages to kids and raises money for pediatric cancer research...through four starts, he’s on the hook for $11,000 with 22 strikeouts to this point, including five against the Rangers here on Thursday night…Danny recorded 188 strikeouts in 2016, the most by a left-handed pitcher in KC history, Bill Butler’s 156 K’s in 1969. YEAR #49 AT THE MIC--The 2007 winner of the Ford C. Frick Award, Denny Matthews was in the broadcast booth on April 8, 1969 when Joe Keough delivered a 12th inning single to give Kansas City a win in the first game in franchise history against Minnesota and the veteran announcer is back in the booth for his 49th season behind the microphone...Ryan Lefebvre, who is once again working both the TV and radio side this year, is in his 19th season with the Royals...Steve Physioc in his sixth season in the broadcast booth for the Royals and Steve Stewart will anchor the pre and post-game as well as in-game updates all season, while also providing the play-by-play call on many occasions, his 10th season with KC...Don Free controls the dials for a 32nd and final season as the producer/engineer.
