February 27, 2019 Kevin Morby Announces New Album, Oh My God February 27, 2019 For Immediate Release KEVIN MORBY ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM, OH MY GOD, OUT APRIL 26 ON DEAD OCEANS WATCH THE VIDEO FOR "NO HALO"; NORTH AMERICAN TOUR BEGINS IN MAY WATCH THE VIDEO FOR "NO HALO" https://youtu.be/sBv6sMenaV0 LISTEN TO "NO HALO"/PRE-ORDER OH MY GOD https://kevinmorby.ffm.to/ohmygod With his four acclaimed solo albums and myriad records of various collaboration, Kevin Morby has become a true musical auteur. Each record possesses its own unique persona and explores intriguing themes and fertile terrain through shifting, focused textures and dexterous, dedicated skill. And now, with the lavish, resplendent, career-best double LP Oh My God (out April 26th via Dead Oceans), Morby delivers a grandiose director’s cut of his biggest statement to date, epic in scope as well as sound. Additionally, today Kevin shares the video for the album's first single, "No Halo," directed by Chris Good. Throughout his past work, Morby has noticed the ubiquity of an apparent religious theme. Though not identifying as “religious” in the slightest, Morby recognizes in himself a somewhat spiritual being with a secular attitude towards the soulful. And so, in an effort to tackle that notion head-on and once-and-for-all, he sat down in his form of church—on planes and in beds—and wrote what would become his first true concept- album. If Singing Saw was Kevin's LA record, and City Music was his ode to New York City, then Oh My God lives in the sky, above the weather, both nowhere and everywhere at once. “Religion is around all of us,” Morby says. “It’s a universal language and there is profound beauty in it. I’ve found it a useful tool within songwriting, as it’s something everyone can relate to on some level. There are religious themes or imagery in a lot of what I’ve done, so I wanted to get all of that out and speak only that language for a whole record. It’s not a born-again thing; it’s more that ‘oh my god’ is such a profound statement we all use multiple times a day and means so many different things. It’s not about an actual god but a perceived one, and it’s an outsider’s view of the human experience in terms of religion.” In 2016, on the heels of a trio of critically-acclaimed albums, he wrote the protest song “Beautiful Strangers” about the devastating world events of that year, and in it he inserted multiple “oh my god”s as pleas of desperation. The song became his most celebrated work to date and the phrase became a mantra for Morby, inspiring him to weave the exclamation conceptually into the fabric of an entire album. In effect, he sought to highlight how that immortal turn of phrase embodies so much of our relationship with the sacred and profane— how religion is all around us, always, and that by simply uttering an OMG we enforce its ubiquity and ability to endure while humanizing its reach. In January 2017, preceding the release of his fourth solo record City Music, Morby went into producer Sam Cohen’s Brooklyn studio for four days to record a handful of material written with his usual folk-meets-lo-fi- electric-guitar sound in mind. Cohen, with whom Morby made his 2016 breakthrough Singing Saw, had started recording the new songs with a business-as-usual mentality when on the third day he was struck with an idea: Rather than create what was becoming Singing Saw: Part 2, what if they stripped everything back and used only a few colors at a time instead of the entire Morby rock palette? “Sam suggested that we make songs that sound like sonic pop-art that only have a few colors, like a Keith Haring piece,” Morby says. “My other records had tons of colors, so we decided to keep this stark, like a painting that’s black-and-white with one vibrant blue." This synesthetic concept plays into the broader vision for the record. Never has Kevin zeroed in on an overall aesthetic to the degree of detail that he as with OMG, from album art to every visual element. In addition to the striking album art, he also worked with the filmmaker Chris Good (who directed every music video) on a short film to accompany the release. The film stars Morby as he wanders through a dream-like series of encounters—on planes, in cars, in a diner, at home in his back yard—and presents a Gondry-esque vision of the album and its holy mood. “This one feels full circle, my most realized record yet,” he says. “It’s a cohesive piece; all the songs fit under the umbrella of this religious theme. I was able to write and record the album I wanted to make. It’s one of those marks of a life: this is why I slept on floors for seven years. I’ve now gotten the keys to my own little kingdom, and I’m devoting so much of my life to music that I just want to keep it interesting. At the end of the day, the only thing I don’t want is to be bored. If someone wants to get in my face about writing a non-religious religious record? Thank god. That’s all I gotta say.” OH MY GOD TRACKLISTING 1. Oh My God 2. No Halo 3. Nothing Sacred / All Things Wild 4. OMG Rock n Roll 5. Seven Devils 6. Hail Mary 7. Piss River 8. Piss River 8. Savannah 9. A copy of this book may be found at: http://www.AthenaLab.com/Confessions_Sam_Cohen_2006_Third_Edition.pdf This third edition of Sam Cohen’s memoirs (with Sam’s requested change of title, and Charles Platt’s new chapter) supersedes the previously released second edition. Among other changes, the second edition had all the previously deleted expletives restored, and had many typographical corrections. The old first (printed) edition of “Shame” is obsolete. By the way, I want to be on record for urging Sam to consider a more moderate change of title. • DUTCHESS DIRT PAYS a VISIT to ENGLISH GARDENERS CAROLA and NICHOLAS WARREN by Sue Grumet, Master Gardener Volunteer
DDuuttcchheessss DDiirrtt A gardening newsletter from: Issue #57, April 2012 THROUGH THE HEDGEROW: DUTCHESS DIRT PAYS A VISIT TO ENGLISH GARDENERS CAROLA AND NICHOLAS WARREN By Sue Grumet, Master Gardener Volunteer Guest Bio: Carola and Nicholas garden on 12 lovely acres in Milan, New York. They very generously agreed to share with our readers the trials, tribulations, and successes that they have experienced while gardening in Northern Dutchess County. DD: Please tell us how you came to garden in Northern Dutchess County? CW: We arrived at our Dutchess County garden in 1986 from two different directions. We are both English. Nicholas an avid NYC apartment plant lover and I, the product of a family of English Nurserymen. While I adore flowers, my only experience of gardening was limited to weeding the gravel on the drive of my parents house near Winchester in England. Nicholas, on the other hand, knew all about potting soil and fertilizing and light watering. DD: How did you begin to create your beautiful gardens? CW: Our first few years were occupied with trial and error gardening- learning the contours of the land we now occupied, the seasons, the rainfall, the animals and insects with whom we now lived and the “devastating” effect of hard winters on plants that seemed to thrive in the long wet hot summers. Each season we brought in barrel loads of topsoil and manure and fertilized until now the main beds can be dug easily down two feet. In the early years we lost about one third of the plants we added the previous summer because they were either too small or not hardy enough for our marginal Zone 5 garden which in fact because of its exposed position is closer to a Zone 4.

For them, some living, others whose memory we bless, we are eternally grateful. None made such noteworthy contribution to the’ spiritual or material development of our congregation as did Dr. Henry Barnston. Nor has any exceeded either his gifts toward the cultural enhancement of the whole com munity or his example of brotherhood and mutual appre ciation among men and women of all faiths. Through the half century span of January, 1900, to December, 1949, as Rabbi and as Rabbi Emeritus, Henry Barnston dedicated his whole being to this his congrega tion. His great intellectual capacity, coupled with his strong religious conviction, inspired his constantly growing flock. Three Temples were built under his spiritual leader ship to accommodate those whom he led in their increasing devotion to Judaism. His love for Beth Israel was matched only by our love for him. Gratefully do we dedicate this Centenary History of Congregation Beth Israel to the memory of our beloved departed Rabbi Emeritus, DR. HENRY BARNSTON. MAURICE N. DANNENBAUM, General Chairman of Centennial. FOREWORD The Centenary History of Congregation Beth Israel has been written within the frame—work of the Minute Books, dating from August 4, 1861, until the present time.

Alt-Nation: Celebrating the Season with Music Spirit of ‘77 Photography Exhibit This winter, Pop Emporium Providence will be hosting a photography exhibit called Out of Control: The Spirit of 77, which showcases work capturing the essence of the punk movement. To make the whole thing extra-special, Pop owner Darren Hill is throwing a few pretty epic shows. The first is X’s John Doe. After fronting the iconic L.A. punk band, Doe has reinvented himself in recent years in the roots/alt-country vein with positive results. The other is Paul D. Hudson, better known as Bad Brains’ H.R. (Human Rights), known equally for rapid-fire hardcore squealing and crooning reggae vocals. The photos are the work of RI-born (and Motif contributor) Richard McCaffrey and f-stop Fitzgerald, both based in the San Francisco area in the late ’70s. Photos are a big part of the mythology of rock ‘n’ roll, and the people behind the camera have a role in its legacy. I talked to Richard about his career and experiencing the era firsthand. Jake Bissaro (Motif): What were you interested in first: photography or music? Richard McCaffrey: I suppose both were interests of mine going back to childhood. The interest in combining them didn’t start until I was 25 or so, when I started an alternative newspaper called The Point here in Rhode Island. JB: Why the move to San Fran? RM: The Point didn’t quite make it, and doing it had given me the bug for music photography. I said, “Why not just move to where Rolling Stone is?” and went out there with the intention of becoming a rock photographer.

  • From Kevin Morby's Sundowner
October 7, 2020 For Immediate Release LISTEN TO THE TITLE TRACK FROM KEVIN MORBY’S SUNDOWNER, OUT NEXT FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16TH ON DEAD OCEANS THE VIRTUAL TOUR CONTINUES Photo Credit: Johnny Eastlund Today, Kansas City, KS based musician Kevin Morby releases the title track from his forthcoming album, Sundowner, out October 16th on Dead Oceans. It follows a few singles - “Don’t Underestimate Midwest American Sun,” “Wander,” and “Campfire.” The track derives from the term “sundowner,” one who feels increased melancholy during twilight hours. After the term was introduced to Morby by his partner Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatachee), Morby wrote this song, which became “the center of gravity for the rest of the album.” Its ambling fingerpicking is soothing underneath Morby’s lulling voice and notes of mellotron. “When I first moved back home to Kansas after having lived on both coasts for over a decade, I found myself - for the first time - dreading the sun going down. This was a foreign feeling for me. In both Los Angeles and New York, I resisted the day light and thrived in the night - something I have sung about many times, most notably on my album City Music. But suddenly there I was, isolated in the Midwest in late autumn - the days growing increasingly shorter - chasing the sun as best I could.” Listen to Kevin Morby’s “Sundowner” The follow-up Oh My God, Sundowner is Morby’s “attempt to put the Middle American twilight -- its beauty profound, though not always immediate -- into sound.” After a move from Los Angeles to Kansas City, and the formation of his relationship with Crutchfield, the collection of new songs that would become Sundowner came together effortlessly.
