A Chara, Chairman’s Report 2016 The Charollais breed is steadily growing in popularity from year to year, we the society currently having 234 breeders. This is a great sign of the Charollais breed that more and more people want to get into the breed. Currently there are 133 Charollais breeders recording with Sheep Ireland, this is slightly up on last year. The more members that are involved in Sheep Ireland evaluations the more accurate the information generated. This year the results of the Genomics programme will be known which is science going forward for the good of all sheep breeding. The trade for commercial sheep for which the Charollais terminal sire is being produced for, has held up well over the last year. The average price for lambs in 2015 probably did not fall below €100 per head which we hope will continue this year. There has been a slight increase in the numbers of commercial breeding ewes in the country, nice to see this increase. The introduction of the €10 per head subsidy for the breeding ewe in 2017 is a welcome boost to the sheep sector and should ‘lift all tides’. I would like to offer a word of thanks to our sponsors. To Greenvale Feeds for sponsoring our All – Ireland Showing Championship at Sheep2015 in Athenry and at Clonmel Show on Sunday 3rd July 2016. Thanks to Bimeda for sponsoring our Premier and regional Shows. Premier Show and Sale will be held on Saturday 30th July in Tullow Mart. I would also like to thank all that advertised in the year book, the agricultural shows and marts that facilitate us to show and sell our sheep each year. And to the committee and breeders that made the past year a success. Finally I would like to wish all our purchasers, supporters and breeders continued success at the shows and sales in the coming year.

Yours Sincerely

Edward Buckley Edward Buckley (Chairman ICSS) IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2016 5

ORIGIN OF CHAROLLAIS SHEEP The breed originated in the Saone et Loire district of France. In the early 19th century the local breeds were crossed with Robert Bakewell’s Dishley or Leicester. From then on the breed remained pure but it was not until 1963 that it was actually named Charollais after the town of Charolles from where the French flock book is now run. Charollais sheep have even more to offer. Commercial lamb producers will become more focused on the following issues: Easy lambing: when lambs per acre count and a live lamb is vital. Difficult lambings from other terminal sires are expensive. The lighter skeletal structure of Charollais ensures an easy stress free birth for ewe and lamb, resulting in a very active lively lamb that’s ready to suckle. Charollais are also ideal for crossing with ewe lambs. Days to slaughter: are reduced by excellent growth rates, and suit any system. Kill out %: due to a lighter skeleton as opposed to other terminal sire the lean meat content of a carcass is higher = more eeeees. Stamp Progeny: Commercial lambs sired by a pedigree Charollais Ram are easily recognised and command a superior price in the sale ring. Markets: can be easily met by the breed as lambs flesh easily without going over fat at any weight. Value for Money: a Charollais Ram excels at work and will definitely serve more than his fair share of ewes! Added Value: to lambs out of hill ewes. A rapidly increasing market for Charollais Rams with more and more demand for this cross. As a breed, we look forward to future and the realisation for commercial farmers that they cannot be without a pedigree Charollais Ram. Guide To Buying Pedigree Charollais Breeding Stock Points to Consider: • The Sheep should stand well with good • The sheep identity number and registration alert head- carriage and move straight card and genotype certificate are correct • Testicles should be even and of good size • Teeth are correct • The udder must be sound • The body is well grown. Wedge shaped, • Sheep sourced from society sales long with wide loin, well muscled firm gigots forming bridge over hocks Undesirable Points: • Narrow pointed shoulders • Head should be broad with some fine pale • Dips or humps in the back pinky-grey cover • Black or brown spots bigger than a €2 coin • Wool should be fine, short and dense • Excessive strong bone • Legs straight, medium boned, free from • Very white face wool • Excessive wool on the head • Pasterns short and upright • Soft or long-sloping pasterns • Feet should be straight and well formed • Cow-hocked legs • High Euro-star value with high accuracy • Bowed Legs IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2016 7

It is critical now that breeders continue genotyping their flock replacements on an annual basis. OVIGEN may hopefully be in a position to subsidise this genotyping for a period of time. It will be critical that breed societies encourage their performance recording breeders to continue this DNA collection and genotyping. The result will be more accurate genetic evaluations. Hugely beneficial add-ons will be parentage verification, and the identification of as many other major interesting genes as possible.

New traits being developed

As part of the OVIGEN project over 12,000 animals will be assessed by Sheep Ireland technicians and this provided an opportunity for additional data to be generated on new and existing traits. The data that is currently being collected includes: weight, body condition score, incidence of mastitis, dag scores and lameness scores. Preliminary results from the OVIGEN data show that on average 10% of ewes and 17% of lambs scored showed some signs of lameness and approximately 2.5% of ewes had mastitis. In addition the heritability estimates for both lameness (0.10) and mastitis (0.07) are moderately heritable, thereby indicating that both traits are under genetic control and can be incorporated into the genetic indexes once research is complete. Research is also on-going into other key traits such as carcass data, lamb vigour scored at birth, ewe fertility and ewe longevity. Future research will continue to focus on evaluating state-of-the-art technologies and statistical methodology to identify “easy to implement tools” to predict traits of economic importance in breeding goals.

€uroStars working for Irish sheep farmers! The latest €uroStar index validation work was presented by Noirin McHugh at the Teagasc national sheep conferences in Feb 2016. The data used in this validation is from the Sheep Ireland Central Progeny Test programme and from the Teagasc Athenry pedigree flocks. Data from 2013, 2014 & 2015 was included. The Replacement information is based on ewe performance using the ewes Index at the time of mating. The Terminal information is based on Sire performance (performance of their direct progeny), again using the Sires index at the time of mating. IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2016 39

In summary there are significant differences in the performance of 5 Star and 1 Star animals. These differences are very clear on the Replacement traits which is hugely encouraging. On the Terminal side, of course we would like to see larger differences. In recent years we have consistently selected very high Index rams to enter our CPT – this approach may be reducing the potential variation in our Terminal performance data. This is something which we will look at going forward. Taking all differences into account the5 Star ewes are 17% more efficient than their 1 Star counterparts – a significant difference. While the primary objective of the CPT is not to validate the €uroStar Indices the data presented by Noirin is encouraging and shows that there are considerable differences in animal performance being predicted by the Indexes. It must be kept in mind that these differences are being predicted at relatively low accuracy and without any parentage validation. If we can increase our average accuracy % year on year and combine this with routine parentage verification using genomics then the potential of the genetic Indices will be maximised for everyone’s benefit.

The members of Co. Wexford Sheep-breeders Association will have good memories of 2015. Our Charollais breeders were well rewarded for presenting some excellent rams at all of our sales. Our first Show & Sale on the 16th August was judged by Mr. Fram Jeffery, Midleton, Co. Cork (D32) and he picked the 1st prize ram lamb from Wm Gleeson’s pen. The winning shearling ram (was also the champion Charollais) was bred by Patrick Rossiter. Prices ranged from €400 to €550 with almost a full clearance. Our 2nd show & sale was judged by Mr R Moore, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny and again the champion went to Mr Rossiters’ ram lamb with a top price of €580. Prices held up well for the rest of our sales also. Our year ended, as usual, with a very enjoyable dinner and presentation of trophies at The Farmers Kitchen Hotel, near Wexford Town.

Knockychottaun Charollais: Flock B43 Peadar McGee, Whitegates, Kilmeena, Westport, Co. Mayo

he Knockychottaun Charollais Flock was established in 1991 following the purchase Tof an in-lamb female from Derek Steen, N. Ireland. In 1992 two more ewe lambs were purchased at the N. Ireland Premier sale at Portadown, and this was followed by a further 3 in 1993, including QY3003, a daughter of the renowned Glenbrook Jarvis (Breed record 15,600gns). She turned out to be one of the most influential ewes, with her progeny still consistently being the top performers in the flock, over 20 years later. Also in 1993, 4 exceptional in-lamb French imported ewes were purchased from Jim Quail N. Ireland, from the H13, D8, V9 and X7 Flocks. These 10 top females were the foundation for the Knockychottaun Flock, and in 1994 a ram of equal quality was purchased privately from Billy Brown (YNT 3008 Beechlodge Levi). Levi went on to win the overall All-Ireland Champion Charollais in 1995, ensuring that the B43 flock was now up and running. Further influential rams were purchased in the following years, including Lornbrook Unique (ZHV8002) from Jim Bell & Diane Christie, Meadowvale Realt (XEK1048), and the French import K2 Janiaud (K2 60029). These rams stamped their progeny with power, length, correctness and fleshing, building exceptional female bloodlines within the flock. Additional select male and female bloodlines were also introduced on a regular basis, through numerous visits to flocks and sales throughout France and the UK. The Knockychottaun flock peaked at over 70 breeding females, but currently runs approximately 35 breeding ewes. The flocks breeding policy has been based on careful selection of bloodlines, as opposed to “one-off” good looking animals. With this in mind, we have always tried to purchase Stock Rams privately on farms when possible, allowing the assessment of the extended bloodlines. There are two primary traits which are an absolute must in the flock – ‘length’ and ‘natural width’, but when purchasing/retaining both males or females, these traits must be accompanied by correctness, natural fleshing and good fleece – generally the latter two traits go hand in hand. A key factor in maintaining this breeding policy over the years has been the decision to regularly introduce new French bloodlines to the flock. IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2016 61

In the early years, in order to support the promotion of the breed we actively participated in shows both locally and nationally. At a local level we attended shows in Mayo, Sligo and Galway, winning Interbreed Championships at Swinford, Ballinrobe, Enniscrone and Galway County Shows. At a national level, the flock achieved significant success, winning 3 out of 6 classes at the RDS on two separate occasions. We also won the overall All-Ireland Champion Charollais, and All-Ireland Champion ram lamb on different occasions. However due to my sons moving away from home, the flock stopped showing around 15 years ago. Since then, the main shop window for the flock has been the Tullow Premier Sale, which we have attended every year since 1993, with the exception of one. The flock has consistently featured in the top of the sale (either in the sale ring or line-up) for over 20 years, having won both the Hogget ram class and Ewe lamb class on three 3 occasions each, in addition to winning the Hogget ewe class. Additionally over the years, the flock has been placed second in the ram lamb class on 7 occasions – never having taken that illusive red rosette! To conclude, I believe the Charollais breed has a bright future, as it offers the commercial farmer the ultimate combination of muscle, growth rate and ease of lambing. However it is important, that the focus is maintained on the true characteristics of the breed – fleshing ability, length, tight fleece and correctness, (especially top-line and feet), as these are the unique features that will ensure this bright future is achieved. Peadar McGee

Commercial breeder report from John Earle, Cullentra, Ballycanew, Gorey, Co. Wexford y farm is located just outside Ballycanew in north county Wexford. I Mrun a mid-season lambing flock of 360 Suffolk and Texel crossbred ewes and aim to finish all my lamb off grass. I use Charollais rams on my ewes as I find the Charollais cross lambs are easy to lamb and they’re very active and up to suck soon after being born. I find this important as it makes lambing and management a lot easier during the lambing season. My Charollais cross lambs have good growth rates off grass and reach their finish weight quickly, with 85% of my lambs sold off grass by September. I supply lambs to Irish Country Meats and find my lambs have good kill- out percentages and lean carcasses and I also sell lambs in Carnew mart, where I can easily secure good prices for my Charollais cross ewe lambs as they have good shape and length to them which helps in attracting buyers.
