SJJ Athletic Trainer is a Well-Known ‘Fan Favorite’

Ayami Sato is a basketball enthusiast through and through, which comes as no surprise since she’s been playing the sport since she was a young girl growing up in Yokohama, Japan. So as her playing career was winding down, she looked for a way to continue being involved with the game she loved. After ruling out coaching, Ayami settled on a career in athletic training and came to America to pursue a college degree in her chosen field. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in athletic training from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2008 and then came to Toledo, where she attended the University of Toledo and worked as a graduate assistant at St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy while studying for her Master’s degree in exercise science. Ayami is currently in her fourth year as SJJ’s athletic trainer while also balancing a busy academic load at UT. She reports to St. John’s Jesuit each weekday around 1 p.m. to start prepping for students’ arrival in the training room after school. She goes home each night after that evening’s games or practices usually between 8-9 p.m. Ayami can often be found at SJJ or game sites on weekends as well. “I love it,” Ayami said. “The kids, coaches and parents have all been very supportive. I’ve learned a lot in my time here.” Ayami has become a familiar face to those involved with Titan athletics. Her positive attitude, tenacious work ethic and bright smile have made her a “fan favorite” with all those who come in contact with her. “I try to be very easy to communicate with, especially for the kids,” Ayami said. “I want them to be honest with me and feel comfortable talking with me. At the same time, I have to be hard on them too. I don’t want them to socialize in here or get too comfortable being in the training room. My job is to get them back out on the court or the playing field.” Spoken like a true team player. SJJ's Trainer Ayami Sato stretches Freshman Craig Mays '15 before basketball practice.
