BREEDERS’ CUP BULLETIN

NO BC DECISION YET ON GORELLA Martin Schwartz=s brilliant four-year-old turf filly Gorella (Fr) (Grape Tree Road {GB}) is certain for the Breeders= Cup, but trainer Patrick Biancone said yesterday that a decision on which race she would target--the 1 3/8-mile GI Filly and Mare Turf or the GI Mile against males--would be made at a Gorella later date. Both races are run for $2 mil- Horsephotos lion. AWe=ll cross enter her [for both races],@ said Biancone. AThere=s no rea- son to rush anything. We=ll look and see who=s going to run in what and go from there.@ Last year, Gorella was a troubled third in the Mile, just 3/4 lengths behind winner Artie Schiller. The chestnut is three-for-four in 2006 and comes off a stirring win in the GI Beverly D. S. at Arlington Park Aug. 12. Biancone opted to give her a bit of time off after that, and Gorella returns this weekend for her final Breeders= Cup prep in the GII First Lady S. over the Keeneland lawn Saturday. Biancone added that the one-mile distance of the race was not an indicator that he and Schwartz are leaning toward the Mile. AThe key was to give her a good race and keep her as fresh as possible for the Breeders= Cup,@ said the Frenchman. AIf [the First Lady] had been at a mile and an eighth, that would have been fine, too.@ SHOWING UP UNLIKELY FOR BREEDERS’ CUP Trainer Barclay Tagg said yesterday that Showing Up (Strategic Mission), third in the Sept. 9 GI Man o= War S. at Belmont in his first test against older horses, will most likely bypass the Breeders= Cup and in- stead target the GI Hollywood Derby Showing Up Nov. 26. FROM THE DESK OF... Bill Oppenheim DO THE MATH At the end of what we considered to be the 11 >ma- jor North American and European sales= (nine yearling, two mixed) in 2005, we calculated that no fewer than 12,000 horses had averaged over $100,000 each at those sales. This is a staggering statistic. Horses don=t really have jobs any more--they don=t plow fields, they aren=t bred for the cavalry. The fact is, they are almost entirely recreational vehicles, whether used for pleasure riding, show competition, or racing; horses are part of the entertainment industry. They are also financial instruments; commodities. We are adding three sales to our >major sale= portfolio this year: the yearling sales in Baden-Baden and Milan, and the Goffs November Mixed Sale, which falls, chro- nologically, between Keeneland November and Tattersalls December (which will be almost entirely in November this year). So we=ll adjust previous years= totals and averages when all 14 sales are said and done. Through the end of last week=s October 1 sale at Tattersalls, 10 of the now 11 bellwether yearling sales had taken place. The three key American sales--Fasig July, Saratoga, and Keeneland September--had seen 3,993 yearlings sell for $477,474,800 and average $119,578. The seven European sales had seen a fur- ther 2,852 yearlings gross i223,478,700 (converting Doncaster and October 1 at 1 guinea=1.50), and aver- age i78,359--which converts to $97,948, at $1=i1.25. So, all told, going into this week=s October 2, a total of 6,845 major-sale yearlings had sold for $756,823,175, and averaged $110,565. Those are approximate figures, of course. Tattersalls October 1 last week, Europe=s top yearling sale, saw 432 horses sell for 55,035,000gns and average 127,396gns (you just about double a guinea to convert to U.S. dollars right now, meaning the sale averaged over $250,000). The number of horses sold was down 13 percent, and the gross was down eight percent from the blockbuster 2005 edition, but the average did edge up by seven percent and the median by 17 percent, from 70,000gns to 82,000gns. Though only five percent fewer horses had been catalogued last week than a year ago, a drop in the clearance rate from 84 percent to 77 percent accounted for the 13-percent drop in listed sales. By contrast, October 2 has a massive 38 percent more catalogued from last year--1199, up from 870. This means more and bigger sessions all week long. There were 22 per- cent more catalogued for yesterday=s session than a year ago, which is why the gross was up more (almost BOX 626, VERSAILLES, KY 40383 60 percent in a blockbuster session) than even the (859) 873-7300 FAX: (859) 873-3746 average, which was up 35 percent. Like every other sector of this business, market week. Anyway, no matter how much you fiddle with breeders--those who are in it to make money--are in sales dates and formats, the fact remains that competition for stallion seasons with breeders who are Tattersalls has stabling for about 850 horses. The only not trying to make money, who are breeding horses for thing that makes sense is to sell 850 horses the first sport, or pleasure, or recreation, or any combination of week, then turn the stables over and sell 850 the next the above. Go to a disadvantage of having to overpay, in market terms, for Keeneland September-type format, where you have stud fees. Even worse, the doubling of book sizes >Book 1= the first two days, >Book 2= the next two days, which has been facilitated by veterinary advances and October 2 the second week. (Bill Oppenheim cont.) At October 1 last year, Darley plus Gainsborough (including Gainsborough >nominees= as well as Sheikh Maktoum) spent 12.5-million guineas, which was 21 percent of the week=s total of 59,635,000gns. This year, Darley (under various buyers= names) plus their new entity, Rabbah Bloodstock, spent 12.6-million guineas--23 percent of this year=s October 1 total of 55,035,000gns. Other big buyers, like Coolmore and Shadwell, have also been buying roughly comparable amounts with last year throughout the yearling sale season. The problem facing breeders is this: you get paid, often more than generously, when you present the big buyers with the right horse. The problem isn=t the big buyers: it=s that there are way too many horses produced with big-buyer pedigrees, but not big-buyer conformation. The only way for breeders to improve their success rate is by helping force the real issue, which is that there is not enough incentive for new rich people to own racehorses, in Europe or in America. There is way too small a pool of buyers for the number of horses being produced, and the amount of money it costs to produce them. No amount of moving what may or may not be perfectly good racehorses, but are below the bar right now as sales horses, from one week to another, or one sale to another, is going to make the slightest difference. Horse racing desperately needs more racehorse owners, so if breeders find they don=t have a market for enough of their horses, they=d better get busy either producing more buyers, or pro- ducing fewer horses. No matter how strong the market, if you have so much in the stud fee that you lose money even when you make a good sale, the problem is not where the horse sells, it=s how much you have in Barbaro Update the stud fee.
