Born on April 27, 1864 in Hartland, Vermont, he moved with his family to San Diego in 1879, where his father established a small horticultural nursery near the ruins of the Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Orcutt married Olive E. Eddy in 1892; her medical practice provided financial support for the family while Orcutt traveled extensively on collecting trips in both southern California and Baja California. He was a prolific writer and editor, publishing multiple journals and magazines including West American Scientist (1884-1919). An early member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Society of Natural History (the parent organization of the San Diego Natural History Museum), he collected many specimens now currently held in the botany, paleontology, and marine invertebrate departments of that museum. Orcutt collected at least 45 new taxa, including 15 plant species and even one genus that were named in his honor. Many plant names exist today with the specific epithet of orcuttii as testament to his collecting skills. His botanical specimens are found in the collections of the American Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution Natural History Museum, in addition to the San Diego Natural History Museum. He died on August 25, 1929 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Conditions Governing Access The collection is open to researchers by appointment. BOTANISTS AND PLANT EXPLORATION ON THE PACIFIC COAST OF NORTH AMERICA: A BIBLIOGRAPHY Compiled by James P. Smith, Jr. Professor Emeritus of Botany Department of Biological Sciences Humboldt State University Arcata, California Ninth edition • 1 January 2017 This compilation is intended to be both a dictionary and a bibliography of selected literature on the individuals who made significant contributions to our floristic knowledge of the vascular plants (lycophytes, ferns, conifers, and flowering plants) of the Pacific Coast of North America north of Mexico. These were the botanists (professional and amateur), explorers, and others who went into the field, sometimes at great peril, to collect the specimens that now reside in our herbaria and that formed the basis of our understanding of the flora of our region.

MATHIAS Department of Biology, University of California Los Angeles, California 90024-1606 ABSTRACT Information on plant collectors in southern California is scattered through a number of publications, some of them obscure or not well known to botanists. This paper gives a selective account of major collectors from 1793 to 1930. The appendix lists the plant collectors with references to biographical material concerning each. It is hoped that this preliminary account will stimulate further historical studies. Key words: southern California, botany, plant, collectors, collections, exploration. To appreciate the history of botanical collections in southern California one has to understand the geographical setting, isolated from the north by the Trans verse Ranges and from the east and south by deserts, with the only ready access by sea. Before the mid-19th century it was often bypassed since the more usual pattern by sea was for ships to go from Acapulco to Hawaii and then to the northwest coast.
