The First Century of Quaker Printers
The First Century of Quaker Printers ATHAN KITE in the middle of last century was the first to publish any study of Friends' printers, and his NAntiquarian researches has been the starting point from which all later enquiries, whether on English or American activity, have begun. Since Kite's time the American material has been extensively documented, but for English craftsmen we can turn only to Anna Littleboy's History of the Friends' Reference Library, with notes on early printers and printing in the Society of Friends, the presidential address to this Society in 1920, and Charles M. Andrews's The Quakers in London and their printers there. It will be seen that neither of these works deal exhaustively with English printers and booksellers, and the information is of its nature still so incomplete that no connected narrative appears. It is no easy task to follow up an interest in imprints and penetrate behind them to the lives of the men who made the books and were in double sense " publishers of truth." Little of this story has been told, and without long research into sources it would be* difficult to give more than a frag mentary picture. For example, knowledge of Andrew Sowle's losses by the raids of Sir Roger L'Estrange's officers for printing unauthorized matter (" sufferings " which do not appear in Joseph Besse's classic tomes) comes almost exclusively from William Penn's testimony, which formed the basis of the account of Sowle given in Piety promoted. If so little can be brought to light for the Sowle press, which was the most important and (partly thanks to the long period of its existence) is the best known, no completeness can be expected for smaller men. -

Baptist M.Pes in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries HE primary purpose of this article is not to give full studies or T even biographical outlines of early Baptist M.P.s, but rather to attempt to identify which M.P.s were Baptists. 1 Accordingly the chief detail in the lists of M.P.s at the end refers to their religious allegiance. Each entry includes a man's dates of birth and death, where known; a list of the occasions on which he sat in parliament; a few general biographical data; an assessment of the evidence for his Baptist convictions; and often reference to a place where fuller information on his career may be found. The entries are arranged in two lists for each century. The main list includes those who were certainly or probably Baptists. The supplementary list includes those who were certainly not Baptists (although they have previously been supposed to· be) and those who were probably not Baptists. The criteria for determining who is and who is not a Baptist are notoriously problematic in our own day. How do we classify an unbaptized member of an open-membership Baptist church? What do we call someone who has been baptized as a believer in a Baptist church but worships elsewhere? The problem is aggravated for the seventeenth century by the fluidity of denominational identity. Churches were often still moving towards a Baptist position. Indi viduals might change their convictions, especially in the 1650s, with bewildering frequency. In consequence the attempt to decide which M.P.s should be called Baptists verges on treating men anachronistic ally. -

The Experience of Early Friends By Andrew Wright 2005 Historical Context The world of the early Friends was in the midst of radical change. The Renaissance in Europe had strengthened the role of science and reason in the Western world. The individual’s power to understand and make sense of reality on their own was challenging the authority of the Catholic Church. Until recently there had been only one church in Western Europe. Martin Luther’s “95 Theses” that critiqued the Catholic Church is generally seen as the beginning of the Reformation when western Christianity splintered into a plethora of various “protestant” churches. In order to fully understand the significance of the Reformation we must realize that political authority and religious authority were very closely aligned at this time in history. Political authority was used to enforce religious orthodoxy as well as to punish those who expressed unconventional views. Meditating on the intensity of feeling that many have today about issues like abortion or gay/ lesbian rights or end of life issues might begin to help us to understand the intensity of feeling that people experienced around religious issues during the Reformation. Many people felt like only the triumph of their religious group could secure their right to religious expression or save them from persecution. The notion of separation of church and state only began to become a possibility much later. The English Reformation and Civil War In England, the reformation developed a little later than in Germany and in a slightly different way. In 1534, King Henry VIII declared the Church of England independent of the Roman Catholic papacy and hierarchy. -

Notes: Four members of the family in ODNB. BACON [Frank] Bacon Origins: The first Bacon of note was son of a sheepreeve, although ancestors were recorded as early as 1286. He was a lawyer, MP 1542, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal 1558. Estates were purchased at the Dissolution. His brother was a London merchant. Eldest son created the first baronet 1611. Younger son Lord Chancellor 1618, created a viscount 1621. Eight further MPs in the 16th and 17th centuries, including kts of the shire for Norfolk and Suffolk. -

QUAKER STUDIES 12/1 (2007) [7-25] ISSN 1363-013X TRAVELERS HERE IN THIS VALE OF TEARS: WILLIAM PENN PREACHES A FUNERAL SERMON Michael Graves Liberty University, Lynchburg, Virginia, USA ABSTRACT William Penn, the significant seventeenth-century political figure and writer, was also an important preacher, but his role as a public speaker has received little attention, though at least two of his speeches and twelve of his impromptu sermons have survived. This essay argues that Penn's ser monic work is noteworthy through an examination of his 1688 public response to the death of Rebecca Travers, an important first-generation Quaker leader. Penn's response to Travers' death reveals his struggle to come to grips with the vicissitudes of his own life and, by implication, Travers' life. -

An Exploration of Quaker Women’s Writing Between 1650 and 1700 By Caroline Baker1 Abstract Throughout the tumultuous period that was the English Civil War, there was a great change in society’s values and beliefs resulting in the establishment of many new political and religious groups. Quakerism, established in the 1640’s, appealed to women as it gave them freedom to prophesy and to proclaim the gospel. This study explores the role of Quaker women’s writing specifically between the years 1650 and 1700, a period of increased religious prominence. Texts from this time are examined including the journal and the epistle to the prophetic tract. -

Contact: [email protected] 1 On 2 November 1654, in a funeral sermon on Psalm 73 (‘Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to Glory’), the ailing Presbyterian pastor Ralph Robinson reflected on the present ‘great prosperity of the wicked’ in Protectorate England.1 As scribe to the first London Provincial assembly, and a member on its ruling council, Robinson had watched in despair as attempts to cement a Presbyterian church structure failed in the early 1650s. Also involved in a 1651 plot attempt to restore Charles II to the throne, Robinson clearly thought that England had lost its way both politically and spiritually. The metaphysical ‘wandering away from God’ he witnessed was epitomized for Robinson by the rise of radical sectarian religion. ‘We have many Spiritual Vagrants’, Robinson said, ‘but we want a Spiritual House of Correction for the punishing of these Vagrants. There are many wandring stars in the Firmament of our Church at this time… there is a generation of Ranters, Seekers, Quakers, risen up among us.
