I didn’t share it with her or anybody else, but she did that for me.” Holly Warlick was an assistant on Summitt’s sta when Catchings committed to Tennessee. Despite her star status, Catchings never “brought any drama” and was always accountable for her actions. “Tamika is one of the hardest-working kids we ever had at Tennessee,” Warlick recounts. “She obviously had the skills or we wouldn’t have looked at her, but just her e ort and her intensity and high energy was o the charts. She was a dream to coach.” Although Catchings experienced great success beyond Tennessee, she considers her years on Rocky Top as transformative. Born with a hearing impairment in both ears and a speech impediment, Catchings was bullied early in life. She threw away her hearing aids, but Summitt convinced her to embrace her uniqueness during a conversation in her freshman year. “She told me to wear my hearing aids and that one day I would be able to inspire and impact millions of people through my story,” Catchings points out. “I don’t know if I reached millions, but it has resonated with a lot of people.
