Ana Mendieta and Carolee Schneemann Selected Works 1966 – 1983

Galerie Lelong and P·P·O·W have a history of collaboration and have co-represented Carolee Schneemann since 2017. This will be the first time the two artists are shown together in direct dialogue, an exhibition Schneemann proposed during the last year of her life. In works such as Mendieta’s Volcán (1979) and Schneemann’s Study for Up To and Including Her Limits (1973), both artists harnessed physical action to root themselves into the earth, establishing their ties to the earth and asserting bodily agency in the face of societal restraints and repression. Both artists identified as painters prior to activating their bodies as material; Mendieta received a MA in painting from the University of Iowa in 1972, and Schneemann received an MFA from the University of Illinois in 1961. -
Contemporary Art
CONTEMPORARY ART The Library of Coosje van Bruggen / Claes Oldenburg projected to be circa 2,500 volumes Partial catalogue June 8, 2018 The Library of Coosje van Bruggen and Claes Oldenburg A towering figure in postwar American art, whose influence, from the start of Pop Art to the present day, has been profound, and whose unmistakable style is instantly recognizable around the world, Claes Oldenburg needs no introduction. His wife and collaborator, the Dutch-American scholar and artist Coosje van Bruggen (1942-2009) had a distinguished career as both a critic and curator of contemporary art, and a widely admired sculptor. Working together over the course of three decades, Oldenburg and van Bruggen produced a series of monumental sculptures, which she termed "Large-Scale Projects," that are among the most iconic of recent years. Their library is a perfect reflection of their work and their interests, with extensive resources on the movements of modern and contemporary art, from Pop and Happenings, Fluxus, Arte Povera, Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, and Land Art, to the developments of the new millenium. In addition to its depth in reference books, the library includes rare historic exhibition catalogues and books of early Minimal and Conceptual art (the publications of Seth Siegelaub, and exceedingly scarce publications from Vancouver and Oberlin, as well as the landmark shows of the 1960s and 1970s), rare periodicals ("Interfunktionen"), and classic source works inscribed by the authors, together with a rich selection of valuable original artists' books, by Carl Andre, John Baldessari, Stanley Brouwn, Hanne Darboven, Peter Downsbrough, Jenny Holzer, Rebecca Horn, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Gerhard Richter, Carolee Schneemann, Emmett Williams, and numerous others. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Frieze London Stand A03 London, England October 4-7, 2018 Galerie Lelong & Co. is pleased to present for the first time at Frieze London with a selection of works by Etel Adnan, Sarah Cain, Petah Coyne and Kathy Grove, Andy Goldsworthy, Alfredo Jaar, Samuel Levi Jones, Ana Mendieta, Hélio Oiticica, Yoko Ono, Jaume Plensa, Zilia Sánchez, Nancy Spero, Mildred Thompson, and Barthélémy Toguo. The presentation will offer the rare opportunity to see Ana Ana Mendieta, Still from Silueta Mendieta’s film Silueta Sangrienta (1975) and select photographs. Sangrienta, 1975. Mendieta’s film exhibition Covered in Time and History: The Films of Ana Mendieta opens for the last time this October at Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris. The gallery is a proponent of artists from the Latin American region, representing key figures like Alfredo Jaar and Hélio Oiticica for decades. Jaar’s intervention on billboards in Times Square, New York, A Logo for America (1987-2014) (2016), was originally staged in 1987 and reiterated in 2014 to continue questioning the legacy of US supremacy over the American continent. Contemporary sculptors such as Andy Goldsworthy and Jaume Plensa are expanding the boundaries of three-dimensional expression. A new stainless-steel sculpture by Plensa will be on view ahead of his two upcoming solo exhibitions in Spain at the Palacio de Cristal at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, and MACBA, Barcelona. Also on view will be a film by Andy Goldsworthy, whose worldwide permanent projects and ephemeral works investigate the landscape he is in. Galerie Lelong & Co.
