Hail Mary on Snopes
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 27, No. 6 (2005) Hail Mary on Snopes One of life’s pleasures is dialing up the Snopes Urban Legend site each day. Recently, we were delighted to see them set a football legend straight. Legend: A controversial officiating call led to the death of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton's father. Status: False. Origins: "Do you know what the area code for Buffalo is?" begins a popular joke of the 1990s. "Oh-for-four" (044) is the punchline response, a reference to the city's NFL football team, which went down to defeat in four consecutive Super Bowls from 1991 to 1994. The joke is sardonically funny, but it's also an unfortunate reinforcement of the stigmatization of those who come up just short of first place in the highest levels of athletic competition as "failures." Sure, the Buffalo Bills have never won on Super Sunday and thereby established themselves as champions of the NFL, but that shortfall should not be allowed to obscure the Bills' remarkable achievement: only an extraordinarily talented team could have reached the Super Bowl for four straight years, and nobody but the Bills has ever accomplished that feat. (The Miami Dolphins managed three consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the early 1970s, losing the first and winning the next two.) If there's a bright spot to the Bills' disappointment, it's that they may have pried the monkey off the back of the Minnesota Vikings, another extraordinarily talented team who likewise came up short in four championship games (albeit not in consecutive years). -

RECENT DECISIONS Illegal Procedure-The Rozelle Rule Violates The Sherman Antitrust Act-The trial of John Mackey v. NationalFootball League' began on February 3, 1975 and ran fifty-five days. Sixty-eight persons testified. The court, sitting without a jury, considered 400 exhibits and the transcript covered 11,000 pages. Six months after the trial ended, Judge Earl R. Larson filed his Findings of Fact, Conclusions of Law and Order of Judgment. His conclusion was another blow to the player allo- cation system in the NFL: the Rozelle Rule violated the anti- trust laws. The plaintiffs were fifteen present and former players in the NFL. Six' were seeking injunctive relief against the use of the Rozelle Rule. The other nine3 were seeking monetary damages. The defendants were the NFL, an unincorporated association of professional football teams, Mr. Alvin Rozelle, individually and as Commissioner of the NFL, and each of the twenty-six member teams of the NFL. -

Wild in the Stands
PETER S. GREENBERG Wild in the Stands fan (fan), n., enthusiastic devotee or fol- lower: a sports fan. [short for Fnxnzzcl The game started at 9 p.m. last October 18, but the fans began drinking their dinners hours earlier, en route to Schaefer Stadium and in the parking lots outside the Foxboro, Massachusetts, sports complex. By game time, all the participants-the New England Patriots, the New York Jets, the ABC Monday Night Football crew and the crowd-were primed for action. There was plenty of it. While the Patriots were routing the jets, 41-7, jubilant fans turned on each other, on the cops, and out onto the field. The game was interrupted half a dozen times as eleven rowdies, chased by security guards, tried out the Astro Turf. Twenty-one fans were arrested for disorderly conduct, eighteen were taken into protective custody for public intoxication, two were booked for throwing missiles, two for assault and battery and one for possession of a dangerous weapon. One fan stole another's wheelchair and was charged with larceny. Thirty spectators were taken to a hospital with cuts and bruises, one was stabbed and two died of heart attacks. Foxboro policeman Tom Blaisdell sustained a dislocated jaw and a concussion, and while a local sheriff was administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a coronary victim in the stands, a drunken fan urinated on them both. "It was a tough game," said Foxboro police chief John Gaudett as he reviewed that night's blotter. "But I've seen even worse." This year, it all started to build up again in the ninth inning of the second game of the W orld Series at Yankee Stadium.
