    Activity Pack – Knowing Bradford This pack has been developed to support the ‘Knowing Bradford’ project. It will help students to explore the history of Bradford places and people. Introduction The script of people and places in Bradford merely scratches the surface of the city’s past and locations important to its history and heritage. There is a lot more that students could explore. The ideas presented here are examples of follow-up activities that will reinforce learning, understanding, awareness, and develop research, literacy, oracy and presentation skills. They can be mixed and matched depending on student levels. They have been divided into subject areas, although most are related to more than one curriculum area, e.g.: historical research includes reading and concentration skills, and may lead to writing, art, design activities, etc. Maths is also integral to many of the activities. Each scene could be performed individually by students to recap knowledge before choosing follow-up activities related to those scenes.     ISSUE 19 28th April 2017 At the start of the Easter holidays 37 students from years 10 and 11 set off to explore the delights of Germany’s capital city. The trip got off to a rather stressful start thanks to both the M62 and M60 being closed; thankfully it didn’t cause too many problems as it was so early in the morning. We arrived in Berlin at lunchtime and were met by Nikolai, our tour guide for the rest of the day. After checking in to the hotel we embarked on a four hour walking tour of the main sights and learnt about the history of the capital from the 18th century, the first world war, the glorious 20s, the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party and Berlin as a divided city. Our first day finished off with a meal in an Italian restaurant; I was very proud of all the students for ordering all of their food in German. ISSUESunday 18 started off with a visit to the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining strip of the Berlin Wall, which 7thhasAprilbeen 2017painted by artists from around the world. Next up was a guided tour at the ‘Topography of terror’ where students learned of the terrifying role of the Gestapo and SS. I was very impressed by the sensible questions our students asked the guides and I think they really learned a great deal. After such a sombre visit we were in need of a bit of retail therapy so we headed off to the shopping centre at Potsdamer Platz.

    Knowing Bradford Script This script has been developed to support the ‘Knowing Bradford’ project. It will help students to explore the history of Bradford places and people. This script has been developed by Irene Lofthouse to support the ‘Knowing Bradford’ project. The aim of the project is to explore the history of Bradford places and people with students, through the mediums of drama, literacy, art, historical enquiry and presentations. To do this, a creative script has been developed which covers aspects of Bradford’s industrial past, buildings, and people associated with them; of arts and culture both past and present; of sport development in Bradford; and of the people who designed the buildings. The script is designed to be inter-active, so that when performed in schools, students are able to become one of the characters. It is also designed to enable students to perform it themselves, or to use it as a template to create their own versions. Pictures mentioned in the script are included at the end of the script, along with a rating card for students to express their feelings about each scene.     #OPERAHARMONY CREATING OPERAS IN ISOLATION 1 3 WELCOME TO #OPERA HARMONY FROM FOUNDER – ELLA MARCHMENT Welcome to #OperaHarmony. #Opera Harmony is a collection of opera makers from across the world who, during this time of crisis, formed an online community to create new operas. I started this initiative when the show that I was rehearsing at Dutch National Opera was cancelled because of the lockdown. Using social media and online platforms I invited colleagues worldwide to join me in the immense technical and logistical challenge of creating new works online. I set the themes of ‘distance’ and ‘community’, organised artist teams, and since March have been overseeing the creation of twenty new operas. All the artists involved in #OperaHarmony are highly skilled professionals who typically apply their talents in creating live theatre performances. Through this project, they have had to adapt to working in a new medium, as well as embracing new technologies and novel ways of creating, producing, and sharing work. #OperaHarmony’s goal was to bring people together in ways that were unimaginable prior to Covid-19. Over 100 artists from all the opera disciplines have collaborated to write, stage, record, and produce the new operas. The pieces encapsulate an incredibly dark period for the arts, and they are a symbol of the unstoppable determination, and community that exists to perform and continue to create operatic works. This has been my saving grace throughout lockdown, and it has given all involved a sense of purpose. When we started building these works we had no idea how they would eventually be realised, and it is with great thanks that we acknowledge the support of Opera Vision in helping to both distribute and disseminate these pieces, and also for establishing a means in which audiences can be invited into the heart of the process too .

    Joint Cultural Needs Assessment March 2020 Authors: Anna Franks, Susan Ingham, Madeleine Irwin Introduction from Bradford Producing Hub Consortium BPH is delighted to have led this important piece of research and analysis for the Bradford district. Through an open commission, BPH selected a combined team of Anna Franks, Maddie Irwin and Susan Ingham to carry out the JNCA, and we would like to thank them for their thorough approach and swift response. The process pulled together public place-based research across numerous sectors, cultural research shared with us by various partners, and new research from the BPH Needs Assessment process, through which 432 people were consulted over February and March 2020 via artist led Bradford Pool events, 1-2-1 meetings and an online survey. A series of Supplementary Reports are available on each of these strands of analysis. The resulting JCNA aims to present a broad and thorough assessment of cultural needs in Bradford. It is, as in the name, a Joint Assessment, and it is a joint responsibility of partners across the district to respond to these cultural needs. The Consortium are pleased to be able to offer this research openly to all partners in Bradford, from independent artists to public sector institutions, to support the growth of culture and creativity in our District. BPH Response to the JCNA: Bradford Producing Hub has carefully analysed the outcomes of this JCNA, to directly influence the activity and deliverables of our strategic project over the next 3-years and beyond. The detail of BPH activity is external to this document, however the key priorities and scope for BPH, in response to the JCNA findings, are: • Inclusion and Access for all creatives and audiences • Growing the Bradford cultural (particularly Live Arts) sector and ensuring there is more opportunity for all.
