    News from the AMERICAN HOCKEY COACHES ASSOCIATION For immediate release: Tuesday, April 7, 2020 North Dakota’s Brad Berry and Cornell’s Mike Schafer Share CCM/AHCA Division I Men’s Coach of the Year Award It is just the second tie in the history of the Spencer Penrose Award For leading the University of North Dakota and Cornell University to spectacular success throughout the truncated 2019-20 season, Brad Berry and Mike Schafer have been chosen co-winners of the 2020 Spencer Penrose Award as Division I Men’s Ice Hockey CCM/AHCA Coach of the Year. The honor is a first for both coaches and represents just the second tie in the award’s history. In 1966, Amo Bessone of Michigan State and Len Ceglarski of Clarkson shared the honor. Brad Berry was also selected by his peers as the top bench Leading a Cornell team that was ranked No. 1 in the country man in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, winning the for large portions of the season, Mike Schafer put together one NCHC’s Herb Brooks Coach of the Year award for the second of the best seasons in Big Red history. The Spencer Penrose Award is presented annually to the CCM/AHCA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year. The 2015 Penrose winner, Hastings has led the Mavericks to an unprecedented fourth consecutive MacNaughton Cup championship and the school’s first NCAA Frozen Four appearance this season. Minnesota State rolled to the WCHA regular season title with a 13-1-0 mark in league play and will open the Frozen Four against St. Cloud State with a 22-4-1 overall record. Minnesota State is the first school in WCHA history to win four consecutive regular season crowns and one of just two to win three outright titles in a row. Under the Crookston, Minn., native’s tutelage, the Mavericks have posted a 234-89-24 mark during his nine seasons behind the bench in Mankato, the top record in college hockey during that span. MSU has captured six WCHA regular-season titles, three league postseason championships and posted nine 20-win seasons during his tenure.

    News from the AMERICAN HOCKEY COACHES ASSOCIATION For immediate release: Tuesday, March 30, 2020 Finalists Announced for Spencer Penrose Award Given to CCM/AHCA Men’s Hockey Division I Coach of the Year Ten coaches who have enjoyed on-ice success in 2020-21 have been named finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the CCM/AHCA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year. Selected by the nation's 61 NCAA Division I head coaches, the winner will be announced on Tuesday, April 6. The nominees represent any coach who won or shared Coach of the Year honors in his conference this past season, as well as coaches whose teams have advanced to the 2021 NCAA Frozen Four. The only coach who has done both is Minnesota State's Mike Hastings. Of this year's finalists, six are past recipients of this award: Brad Berry of North Dakota (2020), Greg Carvel of UMass (2019), Mike Hastings of Minnesota State (2015), Rand Pecknold of Quinnipiac (2016), Scott Sandelin of Minnesota Duluth (2004) and Jerry York of Boston College (1977.) The Spencer Penrose Award is named in memory of the Colorado Springs benefactor who built the Broadmoor Hotel Complex, site of the first 10 NCAA championship hockey tournaments.
