PALM BEACH OPERA 8 LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

DEAR PALM BEACH OPERA PATRONS,

Welcome to the first mainstage presentation of the 2018-2019 season! We are grateful that you decided to spend the evening at the Opera, and we look forward to sharing the season with you. Thanks to your continued patronage and support, Palm Beach Opera is in a very good position: the company ended the last fiscal year once again with a modest operating surplus, our artistic programming and planning continue to excite current and new audiences, and our education and community engagement programs have proven to have great impact on the lives of thousands throughout Palm Beach and surrounding counties. The Board of Directors used the summer months to focus increasingly on long-term planning and oversight. We welcomed three new members to the Board of Directors, we revised the board by-laws to strengthen the structural basis for the company, and we’ve started conversations with several supporters about multi-year and long-term support. You as members of this wonderful community remain the reasons behind our activities. Your passion for operatic culture, for meaningful engagement with our various constituents, and your belief in our mission are our inspiration. We welcome your ideas, and invite you to share your thoughts with us. Will you please consider joining our Board, our Co-Producer Society, our Guild or our Young Friends? There are many ways to engage with Palm Beach Opera, and we will be happy to work with you to find the most fulfilling one for you. Tonight, you will hear this season’s talented Benenson Young Artists and Apprentice Artists. Young Artist Program alumni are singing in many of the major opera companies world-wide, and the program has positioned Palm Beach Opera among the nationwide leaders in fostering talent. I hope you enjoy the performance of the 2018-2019 Benenson Young Artist tonight, and will follow their career paths with joy. Thank you for being part of the Palm Beach Opera Family, and have happy holidays!

PALM BEACH OPERA 10 GENERAL DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

DEAR PALM BEACH OPERA FRIENDS,

Welcome! I am delighted to greet you at the beginning of this season’s journey together. If you are joining us for the first time, I’m especially grateful to you for spending the evening with us, and I look forward to getting to know you and seeing you many times in the coming months.

Starting with the concert tonight, our mainstage season showcases a great variety of artists, musical styles, stories, and production settings. Between the vocal splendor, emotionally charged music, and sumptuous set of La Traviata, the innovative ‘film noir’ inspired production and world-class ensemble conducted by our Chief Conductor David Stern of Don Giovanni, and the fun-filled shenanigans and Viennese waltzes of Die Fledermaus, you are certain to find something that moves your heart.

Equally important are our many activities in the community. Did you know that between the beginning of November and the end of March, our Education and Community Engagement team along with the Young and Apprentice Artists will be holding over 200 concerts and programs throughout Palm Beach County and surrounding counties? Some of them are engaging children as part of our interactive Concerts in the Classroom in schools or Story Time Series in libraries. Others are designed to bring joy to those who cannot join us at the Opera, with our ANIMA programs in assisted living facilities, Alzheimer care facilities, or in collaboration withthe Homeless Coalition. By the end of the season, in addition to our Kravis Center audiences, over 18,000 citizens of this community will have experienced live singing through a Palm Beach Opera Education or Community Engagement program–and most of them for free, thanks to your generous support!

All of us are most grateful to you for your continuous belief in our mission, and your investment in our productions and programs.

Thank you for joining us tonight, and my best wishes for the year-end Holidays!

Daniel Biaggi, General Director

PALM BEACH OPERA 23 ARTIST TRAINING PROGRAMS

The Benenson Young Artist Program is a stepping stone to a successful career as an opera singer for post-graduate and emerging singers. During their five-month residency in Palm Beach they develop and polish essential stagecraft and performance skills, aided by musical and career guidance from Palm Beach Opera’s experienced artistic staff. The Young Artists appear on the mainstage in supporting roles, cover leading roles, and are featured soloists in concerts and special events throughout our community. Each season, over 600 singers submit applications for consideration. After a rigorous pre-screening process done by the artistic staff, approximately 200 singers are evaluated in live auditions in New York and West Palm Beach. Participants have an opportunity to stay for 2 seasons at PBO. Each season, there are therefore only between 8 – 12 new participants along with returning participants in the Benenson Young Artists and Apprentice Artists. Palm Beach Opera has assembled an unrivaled guest faculty including:

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

“The Benenson Young Artist program at Palm Beach Opera was one of my first professional experiences after I graduated from Juilliard, and being a member of the program was exactly what I needed after spending 6 years in conservatory. The program was demanding, but allowed room for growth and artistic self-exploration. The company is a tight-knit group of positive and hardworking individuals, which helped to create a family atmosphere at work. I distinctly remember creating some very special moments on stage with the other young artists, whom I adored. We made each other better. It was a very supportive environment amongst us and from Scott Guzielek, our amazing Director of Artistic Operations. I really feel that Scott and Daniel were always looking out for us, wanting to nurture our talents, and see us succeed in this rewarding yet difficult career path. Overall, having the supportive working environment, great role assignments, and being in South Florida during the winter months helped me to set my own course for success, which I am currently embarking upon.” – Tobias Greenhalgh

PALM BEACH OPERA 35 CONDUCTOR NOTES

Welcome to our opening evening of the 2018-19 Palm Beach Opera season, “A night of ... Rising Stars and Classic Melodies”. In many ways the title says it all, for tonight’s program is really a celebration of both the artists that thrill us in performance and the marvelous music that forms the very heart of this art form. As a conductor, there are two things that I find particularly gratifying. One is being able to work with seasoned artists who have lived with their repertoire and inhabit it in a very special way. The other is working with talented young artists who are just beginning their journey with this great music. This evening encompasses both of those things with performances by one of the opera world’s great stars, Ms. Stephanie Blythe, along with the tremendously gifted singers making up this year’s Benenson Young Artist Program. Add to this the fabulous Palm Beach Opera Orchestra and there is more than enough reason to anticipate an exciting evening of music making. Most importantly, those of us on stage tonight are fortunate to be vessels for a profoundly rich body of music, both old and not so old. Variety, scope, and yes even familiarity were the major considerations in developing tonight’s program. With comedy, heartbreak, romance, and ecstasy, from Händel through Mozart, Puccini, and even Broadway, tonight promises a vast array of some of the finest and most timeless music ever composed. Some of the melodies you may recognize, perhaps even associate with a special time, place, or person. But maybe as well this will be the night that years from now you’ll remember hearing for the first time the spritely Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture or the poignantly beautiful duet from Richard Strauss’s Arabella. Amazingly, many of you will be touched this evening by music that your grandparents or great grandparents might have also been touched by many years ago. What a wonderful thing in a world that changes and sometimes forgets so fast. Finally, while wishing all a lovely night in the theater, allow me also to express my heartfelt thanks for allowing all of us at Palm Beach Opera to share with you this marvelous music.

PALM BEACH OPERA 36 PROGRAM NOTES

Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture

This overture is from the second of Glinka’s operas where Lyudmila is pursued by three admirers and ultimately is won over through a bit of magic and sorcery by the knight Ruslan. This rousing overture was written after Glinka had completed the entire opera and many of the opera’s main themes are featured.

Habanera

With this aria we meet Carmen for the first time in the opera where she tells everyone that love is a rebellious bird. She warns that if you fall in love with Carmen, it would be a good idea to be on guard, as she is a hard one to catch.

Parigi, o cara

In the last act of the opera, we find Violetta suffering greatly from consumption. Alfredo returns to her and they sing of leaving Paris, their hope for the future, and their adoration for each other. Reminiscent of their duet from Act I, Verdi this time marks Violetta’s lines as “half voice” and “as if in dream,” reinforcing Violetta’s quickly fading health.

Voice of my homeland

Rosalinde in disguise arrives at Prince Orlofsky’s grand party, spotting both her husband Eisenstein, also in disguise, amongst other guests. In an effort to convince all that she is a Hungarian countess, she sings a traditional Hungarian folk song, the Czárdás, with fond reflections of her homeland.

Piangerò la sorte mia

Cleopatra has fallen in love with Giulio Cesare and vows to capture the rule of Egypt from her brother, Tolomeo. After her army loses the battles against Tolomeo’s army, she is captured and put into prision after being told that Cesare has been drowned. In this aria, she laments her fate and how she will return from the dead to haunt Tolomeo.

Nous avons en tête une affaire

In this lively quintet from Act II of the opera, Carmen is joined by two gypsy girls and two smugglers. They are plotting a big heist that night that will take the brawn of the men but the prowess of the women to accomplish. They beg Carmen to join them, but she refuses saying she is in love and must wait at the tavern for Don José to arrive. This quintet is often considered one of the musical highlights of Carmen.

Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön

The Three Ladies, attendants of the Queen of the Night, have just slayed the dragon that was attacking Tamino. After punishing Papageno for taking credit for killing the dragon, they present Tamino with a locket containing a picture of Pamina, the Queen of the Night’s daughter. Tamino is instantly enraptured by her beauty and falls in love.

PALM BEACH OPERA 37 PROGRAM NOTES

Largo al factotum

In this most famous aria we meet Figaro, the barber of Seville. Figaro tells us that while he is the best barber in all of Seville, he is also the most in demand matchmaker, doctor, and jack of all trades. We hear him mimic the constant calls of his name “Figaro, Figaro…” saying he is needed at all times, in all places throughout Seville.

Aber der Richtige

Arabella and her sister Zdenka’s parents are aristocrats, but poor. They focus all of their energy and monies on trying to marry off Arabella, keeping Zdenka in disguise as a boy so the focus remains on Arabella. A young officer, Matteo, is hopelessly in love with Arabella andbegs “Zdenko” for help. Little does he know that the love letter that he thought he received from Arabella was in fact from Zdenka. When Zdenka tells Arabella he loves her, Arabella says that he is not the right one for her.

Avete torto!...Firenze è come un albero fiorito

Rinuccio wants to marry Lauretta, a peasant girl and the daughter of Gianni Schicchi. When Rinuccio’s rich uncle Buoso dies, the family believes that he has left them his money, but after reading the will they quickly realize that their entire inheritance has been left to the local monastery. Rinuccio sings of the virtues of Florence and how those same virtues are held the only person who can help them win the money back, Gianni Schicchi.

Voi lo sapete, o mamma

Mamma Lucia’s son, Turiddu, has returned from the army to find his fiancée, Lola, married to another man. After Turiddu seduces another young girl in the village named Santuzza, Lola’s jealousy leads her to rekindle a torrid affair with her former lover, leaving Santuzza dishonored. In this aria, Santuzza confesses the truth to Mamma Lucia.

Glück, das mir verblieb

Paul’s wife, Marie has passed away. He tells a friend that he is positive that he saw her in the city that day and invited her to the house. He greets her as Marie, but she quickly corrects him and says her name is Marietta. In this aria, she sings of the joy of love, but with overwhelming sadness at the fleetingness of life.

Chi mi frena in tal momento

Lucia has fallen in love with Edgardo, a member of her family’s rivals. When her brother Enrico finds out, he sets out to keep them apart. He convinces Lucia that Edgardo has married another woman by showing her a forged letter. Out of despair, Lucia agrees to marry the wealthy Arturo. Just as Lucia signs the wedding contract to Arturo, Edgardo bursts in to stop the wedding. All characters sing of their shock and emotion in one of opera’s most famous sextets.
