Three-time GRAMMY nominee, platinum-selling recording artist and hit singer/songwriter Lambert has been voted the CMT Award for Female Video of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Video of the Year (White Liar). Her second single from the album, Revolution, “The House That Built Me” held the number 1 position for four straight weeks. It follows “White Liar” which was Miranda’s first career No. 1. She is slathering on the southern charm while moving up the charts with her newest single, “Only Prettier.” Darlene Cole, Venue Manger for the City said, “Miranda Lambert has been on the radar of everyone who enjoys country music for sometime now. Her music is so real from the ‘Gunpowder and Lead’ single to her wildly popular ‘Kerosene’ hit to today’s newest ‘Only Prettier’ hit single, she gets across to almost everyone what she is feeling at the moment. We are pleased to be able to bring her to the Birthplace of Country Music for a live show in October.” ### .

COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

  • Miranda Lambert
Miranda Lambert Biography On the caution-vs.-candor scale, it’s not hard to figure out where Miranda Lambert comes down. “I’m really not careful at all,” she says. “I probably should be. I pretty much don’t have anything to hide, though. I never hid anything growing up. My parents were PIs, so I really couldn’t.” She may have become a songbird instead of snooper, but in her own fashion, Lambert is following in the family business, as a private investigator of the heart—a trade she recommences with relish in her third album, Revolution. The 25-year-old star’s biggest hits have tended to be her boldest songs, so she’s not about to put a lid on her plain- spokenness now. “I mean every word I say in every lyric of every song on this record, and every record I’ve ever done,” she declares. “I would never take back one word or lyric or point I’ve ever made, because it’s part of who I am. And there are plenty of artists who wouldn’t do so much of that, if that’s the kind of music you’re into. But if you’re into honesty, I have the records for you,” she laughs. In her most successful single to date, “Gunpowder and Lead,” Lambert declared that some little girls are made less of sugar and spice than more combustible substances. And the title track of her 2005 platinum debut, Kerosene, established her in the country music firmament as a figuratively and maybe even literally incendiary personality.

Barrel and friends were celebrating the first night of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s “Soul 2 Soul Tour” doubleheader in Phoenix.
